I sent the dead device to the data recovery service and they could not recover my data, but they DID VOID THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY.
How? Well, I should have first called the manufacturer to let them know the device died and they would have recommended their own data recovery service AT AN ADDITIONAL COST TO ME. If their data recovery service could not recover the data, they would have replaced their product.
DUH... However, I sent the device to the data recovery service I bought the plan from and because they were not authorized by the manufacturer, the warranty was voided.
Long story short, if you have any external hard drive that crashes, DUH call the manufacturer first.
Don't AUTOMATICALLY call the data recovery plan that AUTOMATICALLY pop up at point of purchase!.
In addition to this, I found the software to be difficult to use and not intuitive at all. It took me a while to figure out how to copy files to the external even with the use of the instructions and other help materials. I did not like that it did not have an automatic "backup" button that I could use to back up my computer/files in one step. I had to go through and sync each individual folder or file that I wanted saved on the external.
In any case, I will not buy an ADATA external hard drive again. It was a waste of money and more frustrating to use in the end.
The drive is about the same size as my older Western Digital 250GB extHDD (1/4th of the storage capacity) - as far as the metal part without the rubber cover. I really like that the rubber cover holds the cable securely in place. The metal connector is a lot bigger and wider than the connector for my older one.
There was no data or apps on the drive. It arrives clean with all space available and ready to copy files to. The downloadable app is optional if you want some automated backup processing (which I would never use, so I'm glad it's an optional download).
Transfer speed is satisfactory, and as always, depends on the speed of the connection and the other storage device your're transferring to/from.
I purchased two, for on and off-site backup, also mirrored to iDrive. First time I purchased a "rugged" drive, so only time will tell. The goal is always to never have to see it in action :).
Note: Not regarding this drive specifically, just my research. There isn't much accountability or "certification" going on in the realm of calling something mil-spec. Just search online for yourself. i don't want to ding this device -- just add a word of caution before you purchase an item like this.

¡QUIERO UN REEMBOLSO!

¡QUIERO UN REEMBOLSO!
So what could have been a great little drive is rendered worse than useless by a cheap nasty little connection port which is built into the drive.
I i had not already loaded it with date i would have sent this thing back,
Easily my worst and most disappointing purchase this year (although the Amazon ECHO Shows Alexa App system is about to become the worst)
The Tech Stuff:
The interface is USB 3.2 GEN 1 = USB 3.0 under the old naming scheme, and uses the odd-looking USB type B Micro connector (it really is shaped like a B) at the drive end of the cable, with a USB type A (colour coded blue) at the other end. You'll need to plug it into a USB 3.0 port to get the best result from its speed, but it is backwards compliant with USB 2 ports.
It draws 5 volts power from the device you plug it into, so it doesn't require a mains cable. The data cable is on the short side, so I've given enough information above to source an alternative if that is a problem for your use case. The included cable neatly fits into a groove around the shell for transport.
The drive inside is a 2.5 5,400 rpm model, although I don't know which brand because I haven't opened the shell.
The outer shell is rugged, being both shock and water resistant, and comes with a range of colour banded options if you want to use that to distinguish one drive from another at a glance (or just to suit your tastes).
It will work with modern game consoles once you format it with their in-built options.
I hope I've given enough information to inform and help you with your purchasing requirements.
