An unprecedented guide for any woman with ADHD looking to celebrate her unique brilliance and to embark on a journey of self-discovery.

ADHD is one of the most common neurological disorders in the United States—yet a staggering 75 percent of girls and women remain undiagnosed. Due to the gender gap in medical research, which does not account for symptoms manifesting differently in women—leading to increased problems with anxiety, depression, working memory, sleep, energy, and concentration—many ADHD women are left to navigate a society that fails to understand their struggles and gifts. But what if every woman had the resources and support to uncover the hidden wonders of her neurodivergent brain?

Enter certified ADHD coach and podcast host Tracy Otsuka. Armed with her experience coaching thousands of women, cutting-edge medical research, and personal insights from her own diagnosis, she presents a revelatory guide tailored specifically for girls and women with ADHD. In it, Otsuka offers an entirely new set of tools, systems, and strategies to access a world of boundless productivity, focus, and confidence.

With her signature wit and levity—in entertaining chapters designed for ADHD readers—Otsuka explores the unique challenges that ADHD women face and illuminates the extraordinary qualities that set them apart: overflowing creativity, laser-focused attention, deep empathy, and fearless entrepreneurial spirit. Even without an official diagnosis, readers will be equipped with the tools to conquer any to-do list and to tap into their true purpose, personally or professionally.

By dismantling the long-standing stereotypes and misinformation surrounding women with ADHD, Otsuka offers a beacon of hope for any woman looking to transform her symptoms into strengths. Comprehensive, lively, and long overdue, ADHD for Smart Ass Women is the key to unlocking unparalleled potential and to understanding your truly magnificent and brilliant brain.

Uplifting and comprehensive guide to understanding ADHD
I’ve had a wonderful journey with Tracy Otsuka. Before I comment on her recently published book, I need to share about my experience listening to her podcast. When the “ADHD for Smart Ass Women” podcast was first recommended to me a year ago, I was hesitant to listen because I had a belief about myself that I wasn’t able to absorb information auditorily. Nevertheless, I gave it a try and was immediately riveted. Any of you who have listened to her can attest to how easy it is to get drawn into her conversations. She is so positive, warm, and engaging. I learned so much about ADHD, not just from the specifics she shared about what it looks and feels like, but also from experiencing her energy and presentational style. I was able to see myself in her in a way I hadn’t been able to see myself in my own mirror. The impact of listening to Tracy being Tracy, sharing with such enthusiasm and authenticity about her experiences, both challenging and wonderful, helped me remember the qualities I appreciate in myself and have more compassion for the difficulties I have faced. Realizing that my many seemingly random collection of quirks, preferences, and sensitivities were all part of the constellation of a particular brain type instantly decimated whatever remaining insecurities I had still been carrying with me at 50 years old. Rather than seeing these things as flaws to be fixed, I began to see them more objectively as features that contain both pros and cons—cons that can be supported and pros that are natural superpowers. Witnessing Tracy being herself so unapologetically gave me that next level of permission I’d needed to do the same. Experiencing her was the key I’d been searching for my whole life to unlock the escape hatch that had been keeping me from being fully myself. I was able to free myself from any shame around my wackiness, and just put myself out there as I am without feeling like I have to squash my personality and my voice to make other people feel comfortable. She helped me give up wanting or trying to be “normal,” and instead proudly embrace being the square peg I’ve always experienced myself as. Why would I even want to fit myself into that round hole, when having 4 corners is so much fun?! Additionally, through her podcast, Tracy opened the door to the brand-new experience of listening as a means of learning and entertainment, which was nothing short of life-changing. Podcasts and audiobooks became a part of my world and enhanced the quality of my daily life immeasurably. Beyond it being a new avenue to satisfy my unquenchable desire to learn during times I was otherwise occupied, it also solved a pain point in my life. I discovered that the never-ending minutiae of life that had been intolerable to my ADHD brain (e.g., getting ready for work, doing laundry, dishes, etc.) could be transformed into something enjoyable when listening to engaging material while doing them. All the credit goes to Tracy! Now, about the book. At the end of last year when it arrived on my doorstep, I thought: After 60+ hours of listening to her podcasts, what more can I gain from reading her book? There can’t possibly be any new information for me to learn. But I wanted to read it, if for no other reason than to be supportive of her because of how much her podcast changed my life for the better—and all for FREE! It was the least I could do to return the favor. Surprisingly (and not!), reading her book was a joy! Yes, it might have been a repeat of the things I’ve heard her say so many times before. Yet, I still found it to be quite the page-turner. Who knew that a book about ADHD could be so fun to read!? I found it to be a worthwhile refresher, and I appreciate having all of the valuable information in one place and presented in such a clear and organized fashion. Kudos to Tracy and her editorial team on a job incredibly well done! I outlined key ideas in fluorescent pink to match the cover, and I’m delighted to have the material in a written format so it’ll be easy to refer back to if I want to look something up quickly, or when I will inevitably feel called to share a detail with a friend. To those of you who aren’t familiar with her podcast, do yourself a favor and tune in. And in the meantime, definitely buy yourself a copy of this book. It gives a fantastic and comprehensive introduction to what ADHD actually looks like and how you can be happy, confident, and successful despite the very real challenges our brains face in a world set up for “neurotypicals.”

If you’re a woman with ADHD looking to turn your traits into superpowers, this book is for you. Tracy Otsuka’s relatable style and real-life examples make complex topics easy to digest. Here’s a breakdown of why this book is so valuable, chapter by chapter:

    1. Understanding ADHD: Tracy breaks down the basics in a way that feels fresh, even for those of us who’ve heard it all before. She makes it clear that ADHD isn’t about intelligence—it’s about a different brain wiring.

    2. Why Women Struggle with Diagnosis: This chapter dives into why women are often underdiagnosed. It’s a must-read for understanding how gender biases affect ADHD diagnoses and why advocating for yourself is crucial.

    3. ADHD and Gender Expectations: Tracy talks about how societal expectations impact women with ADHD. She covers the intense pressure to meet gender norms and the emotional toll it takes, especially around self-worth and sensitivity.

    4. Turning ADHD Traits into Superpowers: My favorite chapter! Tracy helps you see that traits often viewed as negatives—like impulsivity and hyperfocus—can actually be strengths. This chapter is all about empowerment and loving your ADHD.

    5. Finding Your Passion and Purpose: This one guides you through identifying your values, strengths, and passions. It’s perfect for anyone struggling with direction, helping you figure out what really matters to you and how to pursue it.

    6. Managing Big Emotions and Trauma: Emotions can be overwhelming for ADHDers. Tracy explains why we feel so intensely and offers strategies like CBT and mindfulness to help manage those big feelings.

    7. Ending Overthinking and Overwhelm: Learn how to stop mental paralysis and find practical strategies for tackling overwhelm. The “plan” she introduces is a game-changer for getting things done without feeling crushed by your to-do list.

    8. Managing Relationships: Relationships can be tough with ADHD. Tracy offers insights into romantic, parenting, and friendship dynamics, plus tips on how to be a supportive partner, parent, or friend.

    9. Managing Time and Planning: Time blindness is real, and this chapter gives ADHD-specific strategies to help you plan better and manage time effectively. Analog clocks and timers are your friends here.

    10. Managing Money: Money management is often a struggle for us. Tracy breaks down why and offers practical tips like impulse-saving instead of impulse-spending.

    11. Exercise and ADHD: Physical movement is essential for managing ADHD symptoms. Tracy covers why exercise is like “natural Ritalin” and how even simple movement can boost your mood and focus.

    12. Nutrition for ADHD: What you eat matters! Tracy discusses how to use nutrition to curb ADHD symptoms and gives tips on making healthier choices without feeling deprived.

    13. Overhauling Sleep: Sleep issues are common for ADHDers. Tracy provides actionable strategies to improve sleep hygiene, reset your circadian clock, and stop resisting bedtime prep.

    14. Learning Differences: Many with ADHD also have learning differences. Tracy covers dyslexia, dyscalculia, and more, and explains how to recognize and manage these alongside ADHD.

Epilogue - Why ADHD Coaching Matters: Tracy shares her journey into ADHD coaching and why finding the right coach can be transformative. This book is also a valuable resource for ADHD coaches looking to understand their clients better.

Final Thoughts: This book is perfect for anyone wanting to embrace their ADHD, especially women who feel like it’s holding them back. Whether you choose the audiobook or physical book, you’ll find a treasure trove of insights, practical advice, and a boost of confidence to love your ADHD.

To preface, I do like this book. I have found it helpful. However, one aspect of it is that the author often refers to ADHD women she knows in regard to their academic or professional accomplishments, and I believe the point she is trying to make is that ADHD women can be very successful, and don’t give themselves enough credit. But as a woman who does not have any notable academic achievements (hello ADHD), I feel left out of the equation. Like she’s not talking to me, because I don’t have anything on paper to show how successful I am. I just feel like ALL women should be spoken to in this way, not just the ones with trophies to show how successful they are. Whether or not this actually makes sense to anyone but me, that’s just my personal opinion. I would still recommend reading this book.

I listened to the audiobook and loved it but NEEDED to see some of it in print. It arrived to day and the last pages are literally falling out. Luckily it’s only the index but bummer

Don’t let the jolly pink cover deceive you!

This is in NO WAY a lightweight, toxic-positivity festival.

Very, very far from it. This is some seriously life-altering, scientifically and clinically proven wisdom, interspersed with hilarious and heartwarming stories of the women Tracy has helped, with plenty of “Aha!” moments along the way. The love of her subject and fellow humans just flows out from every page.

As Tracy writes, “what we focus on just gets bigger.” Focusing on misery will drag you down. Using the advice, plans, resources and techniques from this book will set you on the right track again. Ready to show the world how amazing you can truly be when you’re at your best. Tracy knows it from personal experience and the thousands of women she has worked with.

If you’re in danger of falling into a hole of despair because your ADHD traits are making life hard, be prepared to give this book a go.

Those of us who society perceives as a ‘woman’ have a special set of societal expectations to overcome.

If this book doesn’t hold any value for you, then congratulations, you’re so on top of your life, I am in awe of you.

For the rest of us, there’s this book!
