We meet the main character, Donna, while she is having to stay late at the office...due to a somewhat overbearing, overly friendly boss--David. As a result, she is late for a date with her fiancee, Blake. On the way to meet Blake, she is mugged, beaten and raped at the train station. Jill Meadows , a Policewoman starts the investigation in the hospital...and we gradually see that Donna is having severe coping one would expect. The problems only get worse after she leaves the hospital. The Policewoman, the Doctors and staff are experienced in handling this type of a situation...but there is only so much that they can do. A rape and the aftermath for her relationships with Blake, her family and others is treated bluntly and truthfully with tenderness and respect for the victim. The author knows the character and takes us into her mind. It's an honest no-holds-barred look at people in trauma--how they face the possibility of falling into a mental abyss...hitting rock bottom...and how they can find help in making their way back up the path. There's a clever twist at the end. Three cheers and five stars for the author. Review by PanOrpheus...pen name for Howard Lipman

Don't know how this book ends, because I just can't read it any longer. I know that what Donna went through was horrific, but really, she was the most bad tempered, rude, obnoxious character that I have ever come across. Even her ex-boy friend didn't bother getting in touch once she'd left him. Perhaps, she was an okay person before the trauma, but there is no way of knowing. Should have been written in the first person.

I was surprised by the author’s perception of the devastating impact rape has on a woman and wonder whether he knows someone close to him who has suffered the invasion of their body and soul that is caused by this outrageous act. Somehow he has climbed inside a woman’s psyche and written from the morass of confusion that is left in its wake.
The psychological and emotional damage that remains long after the physical body has healed, continues to haunt many women whose lives are changed forever by being raped.
It takes a long time for Donna to overcome the attack that takes place in the subway on her way home from work. The aftermath is devastating as her relationship crumbles beneath the weight of her pain and she ends up returning to live with her parents, despite a troubled childhood where she felt beleaguered by her mother’s expectations of her. She feels unable to face her colleagues at work and leaves her job; and slowly the life she has built collapses around her. No-one understands as she draws within herself and hits out at anyone who tries to come close.
As time goes by doctors and her mother tell her to get over it and move on. Easier said than done in Donna’s case. Unable to overcome her fears, she succumbs and ends up in a care facility where she meets a male nurse who helps her to eventually come out the other side.
However, there is a twist to this story. Far be it for me to reveal and thus spoil the climax of a very well written book. I will let the readers to find out for themselves because I think this book is well worth buying and reading.

It was quite hard for me to review this book. I felt that the in depth look as to how a person copes with rape was phenomenal. It's hard to relay the emotional battle a woman goes through. This book is full of dramatic rollercoasters, love, betrayal and loss. The problem with this that I give it only 3 stars is first, the editing. There's question marks where there should be periods and some confusing sentences. Also, even though you feel for Donna and what she went through, she's quite hard to like. At times she was overly dramatic, even bitchy. The ending, though transparent as you get further into the book, was good, but not well done. Somehow it left unresolved questions. Im not saying this was a horrible book. With some editing, maybe beta reading, it could be a lot better. For a woman, I could sympathize with the story. I just wish it were fixed up a bit.

Rape is a tough and harrowing subject, both to talk about or write about. Peter Martin tackles it head on in this novel and he handles it very sensitively. Donna is brutally raped, life becomes a downward spiral. The as she battles to recover from a breakdown and develops a new friendship can she really begin the long climb back to recovery. It has twists and turns along the way and is quite a complex read, a lot of darkness and the odd glimmer of light. I found it quite a tough read and quite difficult at times that said I did find it engrossing.

Peter Martin has created an emotional thriller with plenty of suspense and he did have me guessing until the end.

There are some errors in the grammar and text but that did not detract from the read and I found it easy to ignore them.

I look forward to reading something else from this author.
