John Lauritsen has been active in the Gay Liberation movement since the summer of 1969 — a member of the New York Gay Liberation Front, Gay Activists Alliance, Gay Academic Union, and Columbia University Seminar on Homosexualities. He has been well known as a gay historian since his first book (co-authored with David Thorstad) The Early Homosexual Rights Movement (1864-1935). He's written for many publications, including New York Native, Christopher Street, Civil Liberties Review, Gay News (London), The Freethinker (London), SPIN, The Lancet, Bio/Technology, The American Dissident, and Journal of Homosexuality. His writings have been translated into German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.
For the past two decades he has concentrated on the English Romantics, especially Percy Bysshe Shelley, and is a member of the North American Association for the Study of Romanticism (NASSR). He's written five books in this area.
After living in New York City for thirty years and Provincetown for eight years, he now lives in Dorchester (part of Boston) Massachusetts, in a Victorian house, with a Turkish Van cat named Freya. He is a denizen of Widener Library and the Boston Athenaeum.

THIS IS THE REAL HISTORY. I say this because Laurten's memoir is deeply personal and primary. He understands he was writing for posterity - in a detour for his own community and movement that he did not expect or ask to take. Much of the author's work was published by Charles Ortleb - a flawed hero of mine, but a great gay man, nonetheless. It has been VERY hard for me to find heroes given the propaganda in the gay community. Unlike Ortleb's work - strangely dissociative for a poet - Lauritsen tells both the investigative story of "AIDS" but also a personal story. His portrayal of Larry Kramer's fulminating at a public forum is as much of "The AIDS War" as picking apart the CDC's faulty statistics. At times, Lauritsen hints at a deeper and more sinister plan behind what was an iatrogenocide: and he would not be incorrect. This book also has many original pieces of information about the "AIDS" epidemic that will not be found elsewhere - and any serious scholar who would dismiss it at the lunatic ravings of a confused denialist would become a denialist him/herself.
The AIDS war is, in many ways, an unanticipated detour of a writer who became an expert on Shelley. From Harvard to exposing the true author of Frankenstein and reveling in the man-boy love of ancient Greece, Lauritsen dropped everything to pierce the armor of a death cult of Kool AIDZ kidz drinking the White Milk. Shilts died in 1994 because he lacked Lauritsen's wisdom - as I write this in 2020, Lauritsen (to quote a disco anthem) is alive and will survive. For me, walking in the footsteps of giants will be a tall order.
I wish we had the Internet back then. I could have been reading John Lauritsen’s work. And my young adulthood wouldn’t have been ruined by the black propaganda shoved down our throats.
Whatever doubt there was around the HIV-AIDS Connection back in the mid-80's, or the selling of pharmaceuticals, the debate was settled for me, the medical community, and just about everyone with eyes; the moment combination therapies emptied out our hospice beds, closed down our specialized AIDS mortuary services, ended the need for our AIDS dementia daycare center. I was the technician at a treatment center who's job it was to tally the numbers of clients in each of these services and present the report numbers quarterly. Those numbers did not lie. Those services closed because people started to live. The counseling services were no longer just preparing people to cope with death, but helping them think about their future life.
Combination therapies closed down hospices around the world... EXCEPT in the countries that clung onto the type of misinformation contained in this book. There the body count continued. That was the real genocide; the killings in the 100,000's or even 000,000's of black people. Poor people. The blood is on the hands of the vendors of this misinformation including this author. Where people had access to drugs they lived. Where people did not they died. Where steps were taken to reduce sexual transmission of HIV infection AIDS rates went down. Where it was not they did not.
If you had cancer would you let your doctor treat you based on 30 year old medical information? I sure wouldnt. As healthy as a little scepticism might be of big pharma, their biggest crime was to hold back on giving the drugs away free in countries that could not afford them, and instead holding out for profits.
You have to believe those of us who were there, who saw people die, and then saw people NOT die when they got the right drugs. We saw that people caught HIV from other people with HIV, and that those people went on to develop AIDS before the drug interventions. I have no idea why this book is still in print - other than we live in an age where there is someone who just wants publicity from claiming the earth is flat.
