I needed to make a nice circular hole in a piece of paper that was no thicker than a 3x5 index card, and the desired location of the hole was too far from the edge of the paper to use a different type of punch that I have. I put the paper on a block of wood, positioned the punch above the desired location of the hole, and hit the punch with a hammer. Even though I hit the punch hard enough to leave an annular depression in the wood, the punch did not cut through the paper in any of several attempts to make the hole.
