The Akaso A200 quadcopter is a good beginner quadcopter for indoor and outdoor use when winds are less than five miles an hour. This is an RTF (ready to fly) setup meaning all you need to get flying is four "AA" batteries for the transmitter or your mobile device if using Wi-Fi controls. I found my battery came fully charged. The quadcopter battery did come in the quadcopter, but not plugged in. Since this quadcopter is extremely light weight and the winds were well over five miles an hour, my first flight was in my garage using the included transmitter. I used my Motorola Generation 1 X1 phone with the recommended app for video. Inside the garage in a complete no wind, perfect environment, the A200 performed flawlessly. It held its altitude well, small amounts of drift could be corrected with the trim buttons. I also tried the Wi-Fi controls, and found these worked as expected using my thumbs on the phone screen. My experience was the quadcopter has to start up and either connect to the TX or Wi-Fi signal for control, I was not able to switch between the two. Inside the garage I noticed the red and blue LEDs were easy to see. After getting the hang of how the quadcopter flew I focused on the camera. I was pleasantly pleased to see the advertised two megapixel 720p camera produced good video. My past experience with similar quadcopters from other manufacturers were disappointing when it came to the camera. So I was pleasantly surprised to see usable and clear video on my phone. The camera on the quadcopter is fixed at a downward facing angle, so to frame something in the camera the quad need to be higher than the object. My second flight was outdoors in winds around five miles an hour. Again, the A200 performed better than other experiences I had with other brands. I didn't run out of range and the quadcopter held its altitude well. The image quality produced looked good and drifts were correctable with trim again. Performing flips is as easy as pressing the right shoulder button and then pushing the right stick in the direction to flip. I did notice I was not able to see the LEDs in the day light and when low voltage cutoff was hit on the multirotor's battery, the quad just fell to the ground. Being lightweight no damage was done. My flight times were around 5-8 minutes. During my outside flights I did experience oddities with my yaw input. It seemed to me the yaw input was lagging and then the quadcopter would jump/jerk on yaw to the direction I wanted. There are 3 speed modes on the quadcopter. For the garage flight I stayed in mode one, lowest speed setting, and had plenty of control in the small space. Outdoors I used speed mode 3, fastest speed setting, and enjoyed the sporty feel cruising around at my local Academy of Model Aeronautics flying club. I did not try the one key return to home feature. My experience with non-gps quadcopters and the RTH (return to home) button are less than stellar. These buttons are designed for the user to take the quadcopter off, fly a short straight line, take video or image while hovering in that spot, and then press the RTH button. I am more of a sport pilot, so after making a few turns, circuits, etc..., the RTH just goes a straight line but not back to true home.
Overall, I'm impressed with the Akaso A200 quadcopter. Based on my experiences with other brands of quadcopters in this price point, the A200 is the better choice. The camera quality is surprisingly good, the full size TX is fantastic with large easy to reach buttons, and is easy to fly. Just keep in mind due to its lightweight design, it won't fly well in winds much over five miles an hour and the range is not going to be as long as more expensive hobby and professional grade equipment. But for flying around an average back yard or indoor environment it'll perform well. I'd commend this quadcopter for any beginner that may be interested in flying quadcopters that can do video but don't want to break the bank.
Is this for beginners? Yes
Can it record video? Yes, to your mobile device via a Wi-Fi and supported app
Can it stream live video? Yes, to your mobile device via Wi-Fi and supported app
Can I fly FPV with it? Yes if you stay in the lowest speed mode. Wife inherently has lag and delay, which causes issues flying FPV over Wi-Fi at fast speeds.
Out of the box, the camera doesn't work and the "One Key Return" feature doesn't work. And apparently you have to calibrate the drone each and every time before you fly it. Otherwise, it will not work. I was also disappointed to find that although they claim the downloadable app is compatible with Apple iOS, it is NOT compatible with iOS 10 or higher, which is what most people will have on their iphone.
Like the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for." Wish now that I had spent a little more money on a more reliable product.
