Key Features

Famous AKG sound quality

For over 65 years, AKG Acoustics has been the leader in creating studio sound in headphones. We hold over 1,400 patents for our groundbreaking products, plus two technical GRAMMY Awards (in 2010 and 2005) for sound innovation.

1-31/32" (50mm) drivers

Powerful 1-31/32-inch (50-millimeter) drivers enable AKG K551 reference-class headphones to do things that other headphones can only imagine. Music is rich and layered, while sound environments seemingly unfold before you no matter how loud you turn up the volume.

Real Image Engineering

Real Image Engineering is the science that fits an actual soundstage inside the space between your ears and the AKG K551 headphones. With Real Image Engineering, sounds are huge and accurate, with an incredibly realistic sense of width, distance and depth.

Outstanding passive noise reduction

Traffic is loud. Subways are loud. Other people’s phone calls are loud – and annoying. But you may never know it, because AKG K551 headphones offer effective sound insulation. Premium foam ear pads wrapped in soft leather help create an acoustic seal, so all you hear is the music you love.

Closed-back design

The AKG K551 reference-class headset keeps music in and noise out. Its closed-back design helps prevent outside noise from entering your ears and minimizes sound leakage. So your music is yours and yours alone to enjoy anywhere you go.

In-line microphone and remote control

AKG K551 headphones have an in-line microphone so that you can make calls that are every bit as crisp and noise-free as the music you listen to on your iPhone. The mic is ideal for FaceTime and Skype applications, and virtually any app requiring a microphone. The headphones’ three-button remote lets you control the playback functions and volume from iPhone and iPad devices, as well as Apple laptops and desktop computers.

Classic-meets-contemporary design

Great music doesn’t go out of style, and neither will the AKG K551. These reference-class headphones are sleek and sophisticated, with a commanding yet minimalist design that is available in either white or black and silver.

2D-axis fold-flat mechanism

Though you may never want to, you will take your AKG K551 headphones off at some point. When you do, the AKG K551 folds flat for simple, worry-free storing and transporting. High-quality, metal-alloy material keeps the folding mechanism strong and durable.

I'm convinced the audio world has gone crazy. I've become a headphone connoisseur--or obsessive--and I've owned headphones from Bose, Beats, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, V-Moda, B&W, and PSB. No matter how they are hyped, I almost always notice a sound that veers heavily toward bass and a veiled "warmth". Either everyone is trying to copy Beats or they just assume everyone is listening to mp3's so why not create a sound that will camouflage the poor source quality?

Enter AKG. They design headphones with seemingly no effort to artificially add bass or warmth but instead strive to create transparent, clear sound.

And everyone bashes them for it.

I have read endless complaints about how "bright" they are and "lacking in bass". These things just sound accurate and realistic. I think people have almost forgotten what that sounds like and--in the bizzzarro world we live in--AKG's true to life sound is what people's ears perceive as "weird". It's like The Matrix! But.....different.

I say forget it. These sound drop dead amazing and all the others sound dull and lifeless (to me) by comparison.

Just don't listen to mp3's with these babies. That might hurt. I listen to CD's ripped as WAV files on my iPod and I couldn't be happier.

These are far and away the clearest headphones I have ever listened to in my life, and I have listened to many. It is absolutely inconceivable to me that anyone could give these less than five stars and then complain that they are limited to that. I think the low reviews some others have given these headphone depend more on confusing the limitations of other headphones with virtues. In our shared western culture we have a decided preference for LOUD and a very strong bass with high quality. Many headphones depend on distortion for giving he illusion of a strong bass. These do not. The engineers strove instead for a pair of reference class headphones, and in this they were successful. Almost any song you care to listen to will be clearer with more detail than you have ever heard it before. Almost every song I listened to almost sounded completely new.

But these are not power headphones and if you confuse oomph! to the gut with quality you may not like these. The headset has large magnets in the speakers but this is to provide clarity, not to strip your ears of cartilage.

I do think that there is a legitimate complaint with power. There is a way to make the sound a bit more amplified without reducing the detail and delicacy of the sound. How? An external amplifier. This is easy at home if you have a home stereo system. Just crank the power a bit. But if you are walking about you should probably resort to a headphone amp. It can make a dramatic difference both in increasing the overall volume while boosting the bass by a great deal. I would recommend the FiiO E12 Mont Blanc Portable Headphone Amplifier. These two products combined produce a powerful sound with extraordinary detail and clarity. If you are looking for some great headphones, it will be tough to beat these.

I primarily listen to lots of jazz, classical and some pop, and the K551s let me hear incredible details in music I never noticed with my previous Sony MDR-7506 over-the-ear headphones. The bass on the K55 is deep and and tight, not boomy like the Sony and the mid-range and top-end are amazing; it's also very open with a suoerb soundstage. The build quality is excellent and very comfortable. I listen a lot at night and sometimes fall asleep with them on...forgetting they're there :)

If these are within or close to your budget, I highly recommend them. They're truly state-of-the-art in every respect. Love 'em!!!

They sound nothing short of amazing, there's really nothing else to say that hasn't been said.

The one downside is that the mic doesn't work with Android phones and the cable is a touch short.

They are larger than you probably think they are, but are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods. Don't expect a ton of noise isolation, though there is some.

This is a great headphone for sure. Its performance has been tested in Golden Ears already, so I don't think there needs to be a separate discussion for it.
However, I do not recommend this headphone for users, who love bass and exciting (even if the sound is faked) sound. K551 gives you FLAT sound, the original sound the music provides.
This can be boring to some users. I found its sound boring, so decided to return it. Nonetheless, it is truly a great reference closed headphone...

Great clarity. Headbangers say not enough bass and sibilance in the highs because: 1) They want tons of bass (valid preference if that IS your preference); and 2) They are hearing their sources for the first time and the sibilance is in the source. So, if you are a headbanger, this is not your headphone and there are many other good choices for your headphones (and it's ok to be a headbanger). If you are not a headbanger and want music to reflect a sound closer to reality, then this IS your headphone. Very comfortable and non-sweaty for hours of wearing. Spread out sound stage like open-air headphones, but these are, of course, closed. One slight ding is that while the sound in the headphones is NOT audible to those around you, the ambient noise around you can be heard a bit, though quieter and muffled compared to sound without the headphones on. This means these don't suppress ambient noise as much as noise canceling headphones, but sound much better than noise canceling headphones. During very quiet musical passages, you may notice ambient noise. During passages at a conversational level or louder, you really won't. Other slight ding is that these are big and they don't collapse into a tiny space. I consider the great comfort and sound quality to be worth the slight trouble of carrying them.
