Famous AKG sound quality
For over 65 years, AKG Acoustics has been the leader in creating studio sound in headphones. We hold over 1,400 patents for our groundbreaking products, plus two technical GRAMMY Awards (in 2010 and 2005) for sound innovation.
1-31/32" (50mm) drivers
Powerful 1-31/32-inch (50-millimeter) drivers enable AKG K551 reference-class headphones to do things that other headphones can only imagine. Music is rich and layered, while sound environments seemingly unfold before you no matter how loud you turn up the volume.
Real Image Engineering
Real Image Engineering is the science that fits an actual soundstage inside the space between your ears and the AKG K551 headphones. With Real Image Engineering, sounds are huge and accurate, with an incredibly realistic sense of width, distance and depth.
Outstanding passive noise reduction
Traffic is loud. Subways are loud. Other people’s phone calls are loud – and annoying. But you may never know it, because AKG K551 headphones offer effective sound insulation. Premium foam ear pads wrapped in soft leather help create an acoustic seal, so all you hear is the music you love.
The AKG K551 reference-class headset keeps music in and noise out. Its closed-back design helps prevent outside noise from entering your ears and minimizes sound leakage. So your music is yours and yours alone to enjoy anywhere you go.
In-line microphone and remote control
AKG K551 headphones have an in-line microphone so that you can make calls that are every bit as crisp and noise-free as the music you listen to on your iPhone. The mic is ideal for FaceTime and Skype applications, and virtually any app requiring a microphone. The headphones’ three-button remote lets you control the playback functions and volume from iPhone and iPad devices, as well as Apple laptops and desktop computers.
Great music doesn’t go out of style, and neither will the AKG K551. These reference-class headphones are sleek and sophisticated, with a commanding yet minimalist design that is available in either white or black and silver.
2D-axis fold-flat mechanism
Though you may never want to, you will take your AKG K551 headphones off at some point. When you do, the AKG K551 folds flat for simple, worry-free storing and transporting. High-quality, metal-alloy material keeps the folding mechanism strong and durable.

I bought the K551 headphones in white. I also bought a FiiO A3 headphone preamp. I took the K551s home and connected them to my home system. I broke them in by letting them sit, with music playing for about 18 hours. This burn-in helped with the purity of sound I get from the K551s.
The burn in took place without the headphone amp.
I use a Samsung Galaxy Edge mobile phone. In my options, I made adjustments to the EQ to my preference.
With Hi Res playback and the A3 on, set to hi-gain and NO bass boost, the sound is phenomenal. Yes, I hear things I never noticed before.
High end: can be bright - adjust EQ to taste, otherwise the headroom is fantastic.Treble is not shrill of metallic sounding....it is quite clean.
Mids: Mids are also very clear and totally controllable with the EQ. Again, adjust to taste based upon the style of music you listen to.
Bass: Here is where it gets interesting - if you listen WITHOUT a headphone amp, you will miss the power in the listening experience these cans have to offer. WIth the A3 set on Hi Gain and NO bass boost, the low end is very true and clean. Now, what really surprised me was the presence of sub-harmonic, ultra low frequency sound waves. Listening to some classical music, I noted some passages where there were low frequency thunderous low sub-bass sounds.....absolutely under control and totally musical.....and an example that these headphones DO reach low (12 HZ according to the specs). So you understand, if you have ever been outside and heard a clap of thunder - there is a point where you feel the low frequency more than you can hear it. THIS is the sound I am speaking of through the 551s with the assistance of the headphone amp. Keep in mind I was listening in a quiet environment. Don't expect to hear this kind of performance while listening as you walk down the street near car traffic. So, all of the reports of these having no bass are probably from people that A) Never took time to break-in these cans B) Don't use a headphone amp C) Never bothered to tailor their sound source via EQ.
Conclusion: I am very happy by the comfort and sound of these headphones. On the "could be better" side - the cord is not removable, the remote only works with apple, the phone does not come with a 1/4 inch adapter and there is NO case included. Dear AKG, make the K551s perfect by adding a case, adapter and a removable cord!
Build quality is great. I had Beats years ago and was pissed at how they fell apart. Beats are a gimmick product that kicked off a trend. AKG stepped up and owned it with these excellent headphones.
Sound quality wise, they're great. I had a $40 pair of AKGs years ago and even they have quality sound so of course these are going to be great. No sound leak at decent volumes and no heavy bass to ruin natural sound. They even bring up details in music I hadn't noticed before for years.
As with most other headphone remotes, it only works with Apple products, which was expected (I'm an Android user so eh). The thing that kept me buying this instead of the K550 was the mic but when I would make normal calls as I always did with my earbuds, the person at the other end would always complain I sounded too muffled, and it would only be fixed when holding the mic closer, which defeated the purpose.
I was impressed with the quality but found that I'd have to force myself to use these instead of my $20 earbuds so I wouldn't waste the money I spent on them. They were too big and took up too much space to be convenient. I ended up selling mine and getting a pair of Bose earbuds in replacement, but that's a personal thing. Again, these have a great sound quality. But don't get them unless you want them for the right reasons. Tl;dr for the studio, not out of the house
At first I thought the bass was lacking and I almost sent them back. However I discovered that you just have to ensure you have a great seal all the way around. There was a slight gap behind my ears that was letting the bass response leak. Sliding the headphones a litte further toward the front of my face fixed that problem. A very clear and uncolored soundstage. Some tracks almost bring tears to my eyes. Amazing. I'm now sending my $500 Sennhiesers back. These are keepers.
The plastic casing around the wires falls apart almost immediately, and the company's warranty policy is extremely user-hostile. When I tried to get warranty service for a frayed cord after only 3 months of use (and use only in my house - I wasn't out in the elements with these things), I got passed around the phone/email tree. I finally gave up; why bother getting a warranty replacement/repair when the shabby plastic will probably just wear out again in another couple of months?
The one downside is that the mic doesn't work with Android phones and the cable is a touch short.
They are larger than you probably think they are, but are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods. Don't expect a ton of noise isolation, though there is some.
The headphones fit well but because of sweating around the contact area of ear-pads I don't find them comfortable when using them for longer durations. More breathable material would have been better.
