That being said my son is pretty competent in dressing himself so this was bought because he likes playing with buttons & zips. I have primarily rating this for how well it serves the purpose of teaching young children to dress. The zipper goes across so not like real clothes were it's more likely to go up & down. The regular button is fine but the loop is too small on the other button making it too hard for little hands. The snappers of the dungarees shoulders are too hard to pull apart.
The only way to get monkey's feet into his shoes is to cram them in so not the same action they need to learn for themselves. The buckle at the back is too narrow & the area for pushing the belt through is too small. The banana in the hand is cute but it makes the t-shirt very hard to put on. The t-shirt is very thin yet the dungarees & shoes are of a good quality.
The shoes & laces look like they will be good when learning to tie shoe laces though the lace may be a bit narrow for learning.
I think there are better toys out there for learning dressing skills .
- The banana in the monkey's hand is sewn on. It's cute, but it makes it difficult to slip the shirt over the hand.
- The monkey's foot is not shaped like a child's foot at all but the shoes and socks are shaped like a child's. This makes the shoes and socks a little hard to get on and the fit is odd.
- The snaps on the suspenders are very tight. It takes some effort for me to unsnap them, and my child can't do it even if I help him. He understands the concept of how they should work, he's just not strong enough.
He may enjoy it more as he gets older, but it feels a little advanced for a toy that is rated 18 months +.
The only problems I had with it is that the zipper came with a thread stuck in it, the button was VERY tight in the buttonhole and some of the other fasteners were not immediately apparent. These things caused a little impatience and frustration in an 18 month old while we fixed them. A child the age this toy is designed for might not see different fasteners, so I suggest an older child or grown-up go through the various places and make sure they work properly and that the little one knows what will or will not come undone.
Also, the toy is fastened to the cardboard display backing VERY well, and required scissors to get it loose. I suggest you remove the backing before wrapping it or giving it to your child to avoid frustration for everyone. The colors are bright, the cat is very cute and of a good size.
I don't know yet how it will stand up to washing, so I can't comment on that. With the bright colors, I worry that the dyes might bleed.
I liked that the toy was stuffed firmly. While it makes the toy less "huggable", it makes a firmer support for the fasteners to be pushed, pulled, etc. Overall, I would recommend this toy for teaching a baby to dress his/herself.
zipper, button (hole and loop), ties, snap, velcro, buckle
overalls, shirt, shoes, socks
shoe laces are sewn so as not to get undone from shoes or lost
snaps are very tight for very little hands
feet are soft (he's a stuffed animal, what else do you expect?) so slightly difficult to get back in his shoes
My daughter started undressing Alex immediately. As far as the banana it's only held on with 1 stitch and was easy to remove (but sturdy if you didn't want to). Overall she likes it, so I am happy with Alex.
socks get lost quickly

Edited to add: one year later, this is still my daughters number one toy, it literally goes everywhere with her. Due to its size this can be a bit of a problem, even though my daughter is now 2 she still struggles to carry it around without its feet dragging in puddles. The doll itself has been through the washing machine twice and still looks like new, the clothes however have definitely seen better days, the dress has been repaired twice and is actually so bad I'm thinking of replacing it altogether. Would still recommend this lovely doll but only to those prepared to take good care of it and repair or replace the clothes as time goes on.
