This chair gives me head and neck support and honestly with the footrest it feels like a hammock. It's amazingly comfortable. And, the foot rest is easy to adjust - even the arms are adjustable in a clever and solid way. I can put weight on them to get up - not usually the case with chairs of this style - actually I think this was the only one where I could put my full weight on the arms to get up.
But, on to the materials and build... OK, I just got this so who knows how long it will last. I saw the other reviews so I have to wonder. But, this chair feels extremely solid and well built. The material - cordura nylon or whatever it is - is by far the thickest and most durable of any chair I tested under $40. i would say easily twice as thick.
I was planning on removing the footrest immediately - seemed gimmicky to me and I wanted to cut down on the weight. I confirmed ahead of time with ALPS customer service through email that the footrest is indeed easily removed.
But, then I got the chair and sat in it - just like a hammock. And, the foot rest feels very solid. So it's staying on for sure. I mean 'wow' this is comfortable.
My wife agreed on the hammock-like feel and she was shocked too at how comfortable this chair is. She's now wondering if she could use it in her office - she's going to do an experiment later and use it for an entire day.
In terms of carrying it - I'll put up with the 10lbs because it's that comfortable and worth the sacrifice (I'm 5'10" and 175lbs). She would not be willing to do that - she says it's way too heavy.
The carry bag is about as cheap as all the other carry bags you get with portable chairs like this - the carry bags are clearly an afterthought and very basic. I'm going to look for a better alternative or at least a padded piece for the shoulder strap so it doesn't dig into my shoulder. So the bag is as good as any of the others out there - except the Kelty - Kelty includes a really nice carry bag with padded should straps.
This is a keeper - quality product for my money. I would buy another ALPS product for sure. This one and the Kelty chairs were both very impressive - this is the one I'll be using this summer though. If it fails - and I don't see it happening, but you never know - I'll be ordering the Kelty LowDown chair that same day - it was super nice also but just didn't have the neck/head support.
Update: I've had this for over a year now and it's still my absolute favorite chair - I mean crazy comfortable. I keep it in the car all the time just in case.
The footrest comes off VERY easily in 2 steps: First unclip the straps then unscrew the supprts from the base. No tools required; it is a plastic ball-and-socket joint unscrewed by hand. It reattaches just as easily.
As for getting in and out of the chair with the footrest attached it is again VERY easy. The support legs form an X which means there is plenty of room for your feet and legs to touch the ground without having to remove the footrest. Just stand up like you do every day from any chair.
I purchased two of these chairs and took them camping. We loved them.
... well wow it is great i mean lets be real its a foldong chair its no lazy bot but i have honestly never been so comfortable in a chair. I have owned and sat in several other with leg rests. The best one simply ripped apart at the atitching. This one is made much stronger. It is really perfect cause the position it puts u in with ur lega up is perfect and has a hogh enough head rest that even me being 6'5" have no issues! Plus if u dont want the leg rest just press 2 buckle clips and it is out of the way.
