The foam mats are all extremely lightweight so you won't be hauling along too much extra weight on your next hike, but will be adding enough padding to make a noticeable difference in how well you sleep at night. The textured foam insulates to keep you warmer and also keeps the mat from sliding around. Size, the XL625 fills out the bottom of most my Teton XXL Sleeping Bag nicely (minus about 5 inches on each side).
Foam, it's dense, I like its firmness.
Weight, it only weights 20 ounces
Cost, as far as I can tell this mat is the best bang for your buck camping mat on Amazon.
Thickness. While this mat is probably thick enough to make camping on the ground more endurable ALPS has two thickness options for their mats, this mat is of the thinner variety and a thicker option is not available.
Durability, this mat would benefit from a tougher outer coating that would make it less susceptible to punctures. I will be stitching together a case for mine.
Dirt and Hair, the texture of this mat grips dirt and hair making it difficult to wipe clean. Some sort of coating that boosted durability and made it less sticky would make it much better.
When I purchased this mat there was no size chart on the Amazon page, I tracked the chart down on ALPS website, it's posted below:
Model: Item #: Size: Weight: Price: (according to ALPS)
Regular 375 7551007 20" x 72" x 3/8" 9 oz. $19.99
Regular 625 7552011 20" x 72" x 5/8" 16 oz. $29.99
Regular 750 7552999 20" x 72" x 3/4" 21 oz. $34.99
Large 625 7553011 25" x 77" x 5/8" 18 oz. $34.99
Large 750 7553999 25" x 77" x 3/4" 29 oz. $44.99
XL 625 7554011 30" x 77" x 5/8" 20 oz. $44.99
Again I will not be packing with this without a dutiable cover protecting it and with that I will not be laying this directly on the ground without something under it, its big so finding a good place for it on my pack is still an issue, but I am still very happy with it, a good nights sleep after a long hike is worth the minor problems I have with it.
Pros- Large and comfortable
Cons- Durability concerns/ placement issues
For sleeping, I would rate this a 1. I was using it on carpeted flooring at a sleepover and I opted to spend the second night just on the carpet instead of the foam. I'm not a super picky sleeper, but this surface was NOT for sleeping comfortably.
For the costume head? It's a 5 star rating. So since that is what I ultimately purchased it for, we'll split the difference in rating. It was very easy to cut into and manipulate for costume making. I might actually purchase it in the future for more costumes! The mats are not straight which made measurements a little frustrating, but it worked out in the end.
If you are familiar with Katamari Damacy, that is the type of costume I am building.
