fast chip for not a lot of money

I know its not as fast as an i5 but its also $100 cheaper than an i5 3570k at the time of writing this and is still plenty fast for a gaming pc no matter what games your into. Thats either $100 dollars saved or extra money to spend on a nicer graphics card. On the downside this thing has a low upper limit operating temp of 65 degrees celsius. The stock cooler is sufficient but if you want to overclock past 4.5Ghz you will need to upgrade. I went with a Thermaltake Water 2.0 Performer cooler and its much much better at keeping this thing cool. Right now I am at 4.7Ghz and my temp maxes at 52 degrees in prime 95 stress tests so there is still more potential to be brought out in this already fast chip.

Base clock of 4.2Ghz can't complain, Works great on Asus am3+ compatible motherboards, I did think it was slightly expensive at the time, but the 8350 & 8370 were out of my budget. Most FX processor's are great and hassle free & reliable. I love the fan that was on the coolermaster heat-sink, it gets rid of high thermals VERY quickly.

I bought this processor back in 2012 when I was building my gaming rig from the ground up for the very first time and I had spent a couple months researching and comparing parts online between here, newegg, and youtube. I finally settled on the FX-4170 4.2GHz Black edition during the Black Friday sales, and 5 years later I have to say I'VE NEVER BEEN THIS IMPRESSED WITH ANY CPU!!! I really mean this when I say it too. I've had this baby overclocked at 4.72GHz since day one of putting my rig together and It still is running strong as ever! (Thanks to the Corsair H60 AIO water cooling kit I installed)... I have been considering building myself a new rig but I am honestly reluctant to retire this processor yet, because I know it still has plenty more life left in her and I am curious to see just how far I can push it to play some of the more recent and demanding games on the market.

I HIGHLY recommend this processor to anyone looking to build a rig on an extremely limited budget, you won't be disappointed!

I was building a new AMD computer,and when I was planning out the parts and the money available to spend on the project, I went to Amazon and started searching. Low and behold I stumbled upon the FX 4170, 4.2 GHz, quad core and checked all the specs and reviews. Everyone was raving about the success they had using the FX4170, so I ordered one from Amazon; I couldn't believe how low the price was. Once the package showed up, I installed it in the new computer - OH Yeah! It rocks! I put it on a decent Gigabyte motherboard, along with a 256GB SSD, 16GB DDR3 1600, and Windows 7. I saw warnings about if you're going to overclock it - definitely get an advanced cooling system, so I ordered a Antec 620. Before I overclocked it it ran cool, after I overclocked it - there was a significant difference in the performance; but it is still running cool,without the liquid cooling system? I guess you'll have to make that decision when the time comes. Well anyway, as I said earlier - It Rocks! I let a few friends play on it and they were very impressed! All-in-all, you can't go wrong with the AMD FX4170, performance and price wise. The computer is powerful,and runs fast, I've thrown everything at it, and the FX4170 never faltered, it runs like a charm!

A powerful CPU for an excellent price

Intel is very reputable for their raw power and software support, it's true. However, AMD offers similar power and decent software support at a lower price, which brought me to this AMD FX CPU. This was a step up from my Quad Core Athlon, which boasted 3.0GHz. As usual, installation was a breeze. I was told the fan was obnoxiously loud by other reviewers, so I purchased a liquid cooling system from Antec. That component had missing parts and could not be installed, so I went with the fan, which turns out to be quieter than my NVidia GTX 550 Ti's fan. Perhaps this is because I don't overclock.

In any event, with 4.2 GHz, you won't need it unless you are a true enthusiast. My performance on Skyrim, a CPU-intensive game, has gone up massively to the point that I can max out my settings with high resolution textures and models from mods, and still get more than 30 FPS in almost every area. The big shame is that AMD does multi-threading better than Intel, but the software industry hardly takes advantage of that opportunity, as well as the benefits of 64bit operating systems. I hope that eventually changes, because AMD has laid out the hardware for the job.

I have this in a 990fxa-ud3, over clocked to 4.6ghz. Very stable, be sure and get the latest BIOS, FC is the current one. Only down side is the advertize memory support should note that if using more than two banks it does not support 1866. With 16g it well only support to 1366. I have managed a stable overclock to 1460.

Picked this up when I decided to rebuild my wife's computer. Coupled this with a an ASUS M5A99X-EVO and a Corsair H70 and WOW. Just WOW. Not only does it chew through high end video games and such, its just fast. Really fast. Oh, and let me caution you real quick...

FIRST) Invest in some serious cooling for it. Air-cooled may work for some, liquid for others. But get it. The stock heatsink is just that, stock.
SECOND) Just messing with the ASUS UEFI BIOS on the new mobo, decided to use the ASUS "Optimum Performance Settings" for some generic "let's see what BS they do with this fun", and OOPS. This Bad mamajamma was running at 4.695GHZ @ 39c!!!!!! WHAT. Yes, I honestly think with the right cooling you could get this CPU up to 5 GHZ and beyond with ease. So fantastic.
THIRD) Buy this processor. Its the fastest CPU for your dollar.

TDPが125Wということで、標準でヒートパイプ型のCPUファンが付属していますが、PCを使い続けていると、回転数が上がってきて
ファンの音が少しうるさく感じるかもしれません。ただ、熱暴走するわけではないので、長時間稼働させておいても問題が発生す
ることもありません。ファンの音がうるさいと感じられるようであれば、大型の静音ファンに取り替えられるといいと思いますし、
TDP125Wであることから水冷にされるのもいいかもしれません。個人的には、ケースの都合から、何れは手持ちの大型の静音ファン
に換装することを考えています。

非常に手ごろな価格でキャッシュ容量の大きいCPUが入手できることはとてもありがたいことだと思います。

I have has this processor for almost a year and it isn't as slow as i expected it to be, its nothing compared to an 8 core but i can play games on High/Ultra settings with my OC GTX 660 ti. It still takes a while to render videos and on very demanding programs it falls behind slightly, but for the money its worth it, or it was then i bought it for £100 last year.
