This is the biography of the early years of a small Midwestern town. People arrive here, make a life for themselves and then move on, either to another town or to their spiritual reward. The book focuses on a vast array of characters without the reader ever getting bogged down or lost. The town itself is an additional character as it grows, buildings are built or torn down, local issues arise and get resolved.
American Years captures small town America better than any work I know. It is actually the first volume of a trilogy which brings the town into the Twentieth Century, but it is not necessary to read the other volumes. Although they are well worth your time to track them down, Sinclair changes his tack by focusing on one family in the town, so the other volumes lack the impact of this marvelous work.
