Serenity is the princess of Angelwood who must go on a journey to defeat the evil. This happens before the election of a new king when the compass is attacked and nearly destroyed. The reigning king Vyncent sends her to gather people of certain values to help heal the compass. The fate of everything is up to Serenity and her few trustful friends.
Overall, a really entertaining read that I enjoyed!
Written in collaboration with an award-winning illustrator, Su Haitao, this is a fantasy story not to be missed that I found appropriate for late grade school age and up. The story of Serenity, the Princess of Angelwood, who is tasked with harrowing deed by her father. The kingdom's compass is destroyed and Serenity and her friends are to heal it before an approaching evil arrives.
This was a wonderfully told story that felt parts fairy tale, parts Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings - without the scary elements. There were some wonderful lessons along the way about judgment, love, hope, friendship, and courage - among other things. The illustrations throughout the story were absolutely stunning and added such a wonderful element to the tale that I am going to be seeking out other stories that Mr. Haitao has illustrated. As for Birke's story, the world that was built in Angelwood had depth as did its characters. Serenity, the secondary characters, and the setting all worked to pull me into this magical tale and didn't let go until the closing pages. Very well written and an enjoyable read.
