5.0 out of 5 stars Do your homework!
By Hector on November 20, 2022
So this is my first 3d printer ever and it definitely has a learning curve if you never had any experience with 3d printing or modeling. I'll go over some things I learned about the print process as I've done more and more.

First off, update your printer! Anycubic has the latest updates on their website and they also give you instructions on how to upload them to your printer via USB. I'd suggest buying a new USB though because mine died after a few prints.

2nd is to gather all the materials you need beforehand so you're not constantly running to the store getting things you didn't realize you'd need. Everything I use includes latex gloves, face masks, a metal funnel with a filter, alcohol, a spray bottle, containers to clean my prints with alcohol, paper towels and micro fiber towels.

3rd thing is to level your build plate and run a calibration test print to configure your print settings. I ran the cube test print preloaded on the USB included, then I ran a test print called the cones of calibration that you can download online with a guide.

After I got the perfect test print with the cones of calibration I was able to print basically anything I wanted! 5 stars for sure!

My process includes-- download prints online (at least until I learn how to model lol) > open them with a program called lychee slicer (or program of your choosing) > orient them properly (very important!!) > properly support the print (also very important!!) > hollow the object and add holes (for bigger prints) > export slices to file and copy them to your USB as a .pwmx file > make sure you leveled your build plate after every print and you should have a clean print every time!

For an idea of where I'm coming from, I've been printing on FDM printers for 3+ years now, home built i3s and a Prusa Mk2. So I'll be using my experience from those as a comparison here.

So right of the bat I'll say if you're into models and figures that are tiny (board game player pieces for instance) you definitely need to look at this thing.

Build quality is good, above average actually. Everything is made out of anodized aluminum, the printer feels solid, the build plate and vat are both nice and sturdy.

Print quality as I said is excellent compared to an FDM.

Print size is OK. The 65mm restriction is a bit limiting (I'd love to see a version of this printer where that is closer to 100mm). But then again if I need to print large objects I have my i3's which do bigger, less detail oriented things well.

Post processing - it's not that bad. Really. Lots of people are turned off by post processing the prints. I'd say it takes me about 20-30mins of clean up time after a print is done to wash the parts in alcohol, UV cure them (I built myself a curing chamber) and clean up the leftover resin out of the printer. It does take some time, but the more you do it, the faster you get at it.

Print times - slow if you do 1 item at a time, super fast if you fill the plate. This needs some explanation, since print time is entirely based on the Z-height of your part, taller prints take longer. The nice thing is volume doesn't affect print time. So if you need to print a bunch of things. Printing 1 takes the same time as printing 10! So if you're printing a bunch at once. The effective print time is super fast compared to an FDM. As an example the picture in my post has 12 models printed at the same time, total print time was 2h30m. That would average out to about 12.5min per part.

So if you plan ahead, you can get some killer print times and you reduce the cleanup cycles as well.

Consistency - so far so good. I've read a lot of negative reviews of prints coming off the bed, and other issues, so far I've had none of those, my success rate has been 100%. Note I do re-zero and relevel my build plate before every print, having experience in 3D printing I know that a perfect 1st layer is the key to success, so while I might not have to do this step, it only takes about 2 minute to re-zero and level the plate so I figure why not?

Smell - Yes it smells. This is the only real negative I have so far. It has an unpleasant odor, definitely ventilation or an open window recommended when printing. They say it has a filter, but it still smells. I wouldn't recommend this printer if you don't have a spare room / workspace to put it in. You need a dedicated area for it.

I have noticed the clear resin seems to have less of an odor than the colored ones?

Software - OK, but could use some work. The software is functional but there are some annoyances, for one, each model it's it's own entity, I wish you could group them together, it would make laying out the build plate easier and faster. Same with support generation. You have to do each individual part. Also a usage meter would be nice to have (estimated volume of resin used), right now I have no idea how much material I'm using. This would help calculate cost/part. Like I said, it's functional but I hope anycubic keeps updating it and adding more features to it.

Long term cost - More expensive than FDM. I haven't used it enough to judge how different this is, but FDM filament is super cheap now compared to when I started printing, and there are items that wear on the photon (FEP material). I don't know how long the FEP lasts, but this will definitely add to the long term running costs.

Safety - not for kids. In its uncured state, resin is nasty stuff, need to use proper PPE when handling it, but that's not specific to this printer, it's all resin-type printing.

    Recommendation:

Simply put if you're looking to print extremely high detailed prints the Photon is a steal for the price it's listed at. The resolution and level of detail you get is incredible. FDM technology just can't compete, regardless of how good of an FDM printer you have.

Absolutely recommend if you're looking for the above.

Credit for the models goes to: VirtuallyJason, I downloaded these off thingiverse for my Scythe board game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing little SLA printer!
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on April 30, 2019
This little printer is amazing value. Super easy to use (watch the video on their website Support page). I had it up and running and printing parts within an hour. Download the Photon slicer software, it's really easy to use. I have 8 other 3D printers (all FDM type) - this is my first SLA printer.

I bought a litre of the clear resin - the printer comes with a half litre of green transparent resin. The print quality is magnificent.

Some things to consider buying if you're going to be using this a lot (like I am):
    - UV nail curing station - there's a bunch, but I bought one that has no bottom, so I can mount it up high and cure really tall things. Also has room to hold a solar rotating display stand - useful to things get cured uniformly.
    - Rotating solar display stand (see above)
    - Ultrasonic jewelry cleaner washer - fill it with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and it makes cleaning your parts much easier - do this BEFORE you cure them or you'll cure a bunch of extra resin onto them.

You can get all the above stuff for about $60 and it's well worth it.

The printer itself comes with everything you'll need - gloves, tools, filter funnels, and spare FEP film for the printing tray.

I highly recommend this printer if you need super detailed, high resolution prints. Wall thicknesses down to .004" are possible - amazing - 4 thou.

I got this printer about a month ago for the purposes of printing miniatures for my tabletop games. So far I've cranked out about 30 miniatures so far for D&D and Battletech. The quality is remarkable when you properly slice and support a model.

Setup and leveling the bed were surprisingly easy coming from FDM printing. I simply had to attach the print platform and run the leveling with a sheet of paper once. After that I was immediately

The only small gripe I have is that supported surfaces tend to lose detail if there are too many supports or not enough of an angle for excess resin to flow away. But this is a limit of SLA/DLP printing and not the Photon itself.

Any issues I've had were immediately resolved via the Anycubic Photon facebook group.

If you're looking for a solid low cost resin printer to produce some amazing miniatures for your table top games I cannot recommend this printer enough.

This is my first resin for the ANYCUBIC Photon, and I'm very pleased with it. The print quality is top notch, and generally when there's a problem, at least for the first while, it's user error. Not by forcing anything, but more not following the proper steps to set up the printer, software, and the room where you print.

Here's what I learned as the most important things to remember:
    - leveling is extremely important and you really do need it to be as close to perfect as possible
    - the room should be 20-35 degrees celcius ideally
    - 8-10 seconds for exposure time, 6 bottom layers at 60-80 seconds for adhesion to the plate
    - the sound of the print sticking to the vat means it's leveled and sticking to the plate which is a GOOD thing
    - printing flat surfaces to the plate can get stuck to the plate and it's a pain
    - the software that comes with the printer is fine, but I find Chitubox to be better overall
    - print models at a 10-45 degree angle to hide the layers when they stand upright
    - learn to hollow prints AND dig 2 holes in it to drain the excess resin and prevent captured resin and fractures
    - remove supports by dunking print in HOT water (and ALWAYS wear gloved when handling everything) which makes them Peel off with easy and is very satisfying
    - make sure the room is somewhere where you don't care about the smell of the resin, because it is strong AF, and you do not want to breath it in. Consider investing in way to safely put the exhaust outside of the room through tubing or make space in your garage
    - make sure the resin vat and the printer screen (and really the printer as a whole) are clean. Be extremely careful when handling a vat filled with resin because spilling is a big problem and sucks
    - when figuring out how much resin to put in the vat, lower the plate to the home level (all the way down to where you leveled it originally), THEN pour it in. Otherwise you can make it overflow
    - the amount of resin you can out in the vat while the build plate is at the 'home' setting is about 100ml. You should see the resin get as high as the rectangular piece with the 4 screw in the top, but only to the bottom of it. You don't want it going on the screws.

Prints left to right: D&D 5th Elder Oblex (3x3 base), Fable's Jack of Blades, Activated Behelit from Berserk, and a Castle from Thingiverse that I used as a stress test. It turned out amazing. The Frog Knight was made in Heroforge, and the final picture shows the Elder Oblex with a clear gloss coat on the outside to make it really pop.

Only con is I bought it for 60 dollars off instead of the 100 dollars off sale it has now.
