-Light, less than my Surface Pro that I am using it with.
-Only requires 1 usb port to run.
-Least expensive portable monitor out there
-Ability to have in portrait or landscape mode
-Useful and somewhat flexible built in stand
-Position of usb cord is not the best.
-No inherent way to adjust brightness (will discuss awesome solution below)
-Could have reduced thickness but its still light
-Does consume more power than other portable monitors, 8W compared to 5W on competitor models (need more usage to determine exact impact on battery, thus far seems to be reducing about 25%)
-No screen cover included, but conveniently had a 16" laptop sleeve
-Glossy screen, but isn't too bad compared to my Surface Pro.
How to reduce brightness of screen
-Down and install--------------------------------------PangoBright-----------------------------
-Finish, its that easy. Definitely give props to the developers. Control station is conveniently located on main monitor's task bar BUT I can control external monitor (AOC portable monitor) seperately!!!! Works on windows 8.1, using it on the monitor right now as I type.
-Thumbs up so others can see.
For the price, and the portability this is a great monitor. I use a 2011 MacBook Air 11" Screen and I spend the majority of my life in Excel which can be a bit tough on my tiny screen alone. So when I'm not at home, or in the office, this is simply the best solution. It is literally plug and play, no frills, just a whole lot of screen real estate for a very reasonably low price.
For Mac users that don't have a CD drive like me. Just google "AOC E1649FWU Drivers" and the AOC site is top of the list. Some users have reported issues with downloading the drivers from here but it was simple and fast for me, 5 minutes total including a full reboot after installation. When I turned the laptop back on the display turned on instantly.
You cannot control the brightness - but I can use excel and word with ZERO problems - I just put it immediately into full screen mode.
This is not the screen you get if you want to watch HD movies &c.. But if you need to seriously increase productivity at home, starbucks, or on the road this is for you. I also bought a 16" laptop case to protect it while traveling just because, why not.
I highly recommend this product so far.
I've reduced my review to 1 star. Purchased this screen April 20, 2015. It is now Nov 11, 2015. The USB port has grown considerably looser during those 6 months or so. I have been using it weekly at a client site and at home during that time. I connect and disconnect the USB daily. The screen just died completely this morning. 6 months of use for a screen that is marketed as a portable solution is unacceptable.
Edit---- The USB connection on the back just gets worse over time. It's becoming a deal breaker for me. Which is sad because this is such a great screen. I'm beginning to look at different options, like the ASUS slim screen that is available through Amazon as well.
AOC - it would be nice if you'd address this issue in future releases. This is just really poor product design.
Original Review - 5 Stars - I've been using this screen every week for the past few months. It's a great travel screen for the price.
Holds up to travel
Portrait and Landscape setup
Brightness is just right
USB connection on the back of the screen is loose.
The only complaint is that loose USB connection. If someone touches the cord, or if you move the screen, you run the risk of the screen losing connection with the laptop. Not a big deal since you just have to move your open windows back over to it once it reconnects. But it would be nice if the rear connection was tight.
Top international reviews
- USB self powered
- Poor Vertical view angle
- No possibility to mount
- No protection for transportation
I wanted to add 2 side monitor to my main 25 in monitor that I use with my MacBook Pro. I wanted to place them vertically on both side but the the viewing angle was not quite good enough. I also realized that when use in vertical mode there is not enough place to put much content with the giving resolution. Since these monitor do not have mounting you cannot easily attach them to a monitor mount. You need to be very careful when transporting them around not to break the LCD. I recommend a laptop bag which is rigid enough.
The monitor started to have a high pitch noise after a few months, upgrading to the latest firmware do not solve the issue. I removed one star for that reason.
Oh, I also love the auto-rotate feature. When I rotate the back stand, the screen orientation automatically changes.
I would give it five stars, but the resolution is lower than my laptop, so I find that annoying in some ways and a blessing for my old eyes that like bigger print. Portability is a bit of an issue. It is almost like having a second laptop to carry around. I put it in it's own protective sleeve. Not sure it would survive being banged around in my backpack with the laptop and other stuff.
Even with the cons, it is for the price a great alternative second monitor.
Addendum: For those who upgraded to Windows 8.1, I found that DisplayLink has drivers you can download that allows the monitor to work with my Windows 8.1 machines. A relief because I was a bit disappointed that when I upgraded that the monitor had quit working. But, now that I have discovered the updated drivers work I am extremely relieved!
- This monitor is advertised to be a portable secondary monitor. I bought it hoping that I would be able to use it as a portable primary monitor for my Mac Mini. I couldn't find anyone who was using it this way, and so I wasn't certain if it would work, but it functions very well in this capacity. When I'm starting up the computer, the screen doesn't turn on for the startup page that features the Apple logo, but once it gets to the login page, the monitor snaps on, and I'm able to log on and use it as a regular monitor with the added benefit of it being extremely portable and not requiring an additional power supply. So I use this monitor as a secondary screen when I'm in my office, and as a primary screen when I'm out. It makes my Mac Mini very portable, and though I haven't tried it at a coffee shop yet, I'm sure confident the setup would work just fine as long as I have access to an electrical outlet (for my mini -- not the monitor). I'm very happy with it!
- Some people have reported choppy video, I've checked with youtube videos and just now opened a netflix show just to see, and didn't notice any problems here
None of these are of significant importance to me, but I thought I'd list them anyway.
- because it's supposed to be portable, it would be nice if it had a cover for the screen. I think I will buy a cheap laptop sleeve to fit over the monitor.
- as mentioned in other places, the monitor won't automatically rotate to work in portrait mode when using OSX. You can adjust this setting through system preferences, though.
- had trouble opening a keynote presentation when using as primary monitor
- screen shows some glare. Viewing angles are limited
If you're looking for a portable monitor you can use as a primary screen, for the price, this can't be beat!
Drivers Installing and Disconnecting Automatically.
I Tried with Very low cost Laptops its working Fine.( Tamilnadu Govtn Given Laptops ).
I Thought maybe power issue then I purchsed Powered USb HUb And again Same Issue.
I tried Latest Disply link Driver Also no Result.
I am Using Lenovo THinkpad L440 Model.
As others already said, the USB connector on the screen is in a very awkward location, it is a pain to connect it each time.
For the price, it is still a very useful product. One suggestion would be to offer a higher resolution model, I would have paid a premium to get it.
However, I still returned it after two weeks, when i saw LT1421 on sale. After I had the lenovo, don't know why the monitor is not working at some stage, (probably is my fault by set my computer wrongly). Anyway, i contacted the technical support of lenovo, they replaced a new one for me quite quickly, and said i have three years warranty on that. So far I am happy with the new one. Hope this is helpful for someone who struggling with the choice between AOC and Lenovo.
pro's: you don't really need to worry about anything above.
It works in portrait or landscape mode (which it switches between automatically), but the gem of it is the fact it just works off USB.
If you are a Windows 8 user, get the latest bits (currently in beta as I type) from the manufacturer's website.
It works a dream and no problem watching movies full screen off it either.
Great price. My only gripe is it's $12 cheaper now than when I bought it 2 weeks ago.
