Ms Wood's style is clear, interesting, and packed with information and analysis. Important figures, events, terminology, and places such as "Renaissance," "Hidden Imam," and "Genghis Khan" are bold-faced and listed at the end of each section for review. Student understanding of events is enhanced with inserts such as "Perspectives: Motivations for the Crusades" and other gems that provide POV analysis and, from my perspective, are superb POV modeling for students. Other inserts provide historic comparisons, primary sources and so forth--all adapted to provide clearer understanding of the historical process and give the student intellectual ammunition from which to go forth a do battle on that day in May. She also includes end of unit multiple choice questions and the obligatory practice exam at the end of the book.
That there are no color illustrations, for me, was hardly a drawback. Textbooks and the internet provide all the color pictures one might need. It simply makes the book affordable. She hits all the AP themes and provides a framework for understanding gender, labor and social class issues. There is not a single unnecessary word while at the same time not one important idea or concept left out.Read more ›
