Top Customer Reviews
I do not know where Amazon and other major resellers got the info that the BR1500G "ensures electronics that have active PFC power requirements will not unexpectedly shutdown" but APC does not seem to agree with it. Just FYI.
1. Remove the 6 screws on the back of the unit.
2. Pry off the front cover.
3. Lay unit on it's side so that the 3 screws on the front are facing up.
4. Remove the 3 screws on the front of the unit.
5. Slide the cover towards the back of the unit to remove it.
6. Disconnect the leads plugged into the F2 terminals on the batteries.
7. Remove batteries.
8. Insert new batteries and reconnect the leads.
When I plugged the unit into my BR1500G UPS it basically tripled my estimated runtime per the PowerChute software. Which is exactly as expected since the BR1500G contains two batteries and the external battery pack contain four additional batteries. My reported runtime is now 96 minutes with 233 watts draw. I found no fan inside this external battery.
The BR1500G contained 2 Kung Long WP1236W batteries. 12V 9ah 36W. Made in Vietnam. This external battery pack contained 4 CSB HR 1234W F2 batteries 12V 9ah 34W.
Still rating it 5 stars. Although I'm disappointed about difficulty to replace batteries when the time comes.
Also, I'm really curious to know if the BR1500G is able to inform the user when the external battery needs replacement or if it just gives a general replace battery message for all batteries. Looking forward to seeing future reviews.
First, I want to clear up some information I have read in some of the negative reviews here. The device makes absolutely no sound when the battery is not in use, which includes being charged; do not believe otherwise. If it does, you were given a bad unit so just send it back. When it's drawing battery power, there is a fan to cool it and you can hear minor coil whine which really is a small inconvenience. There will not be compatibility issues if you have a quality power supply in your system manufactured in the last few years. I have a Corsair HX750 (750W) and it works fine with this UPS which can handle a max load of 780W. My Corsair PSU has Active PFC with a PF value of 0.99 and has had no problems at all when running on the battery. I have seen reviews that claim this UPS will cause PSUs with Active PFC to shut off because of the stepped sine wave it puts out, but this is obviously not true at all and must depend on other factors (such as people using pre-built PCs with cheap components). You will not need the external battery unless you are trying to play a video game for 30 minutes without power for some reason; that is not the intended use of this anyhow.
The PowerChute software that comes bundled with this UPS is apparently useless for Windows 7 64-bit users. The installer will ask you to browse to the directory in which you want to install the app, but it will not continue when you hit the next button at all. I can't speak for what happens in Win 8.1 or 10. However, this is not really a big deal and I will explain why. All you need to do is connect the device to your primary PC with the data cable (RJ45 connection to the UPS, other side is USB to PC). This passes data to Windows so it can utilize the percentage value of remaining battery. From here, you can simply treat the UPS like a laptop battery within Windows, and manage your power plan triggers from Power Options -> Advanced Settings in the Control Panel. I recommend setting the "Battery->Critical battery action->On battery:" parameter to Sleep so that the OS can resume where you left off. This is essentially all that PowerChute would automate for you anyway. You will have to do without the UI, but it gives you a lot of the same information you could just view with the onboard LCD screen.
Overall, I think I paid a fair price for this item and it performs exactly as advertised.
