I do not know where Amazon and other major resellers got the info that the BR1500G "ensures electronics that have active PFC power requirements will not unexpectedly shutdown" but APC does not seem to agree with it. Just FYI.
1. Remove the 6 screws on the back of the unit.
2. Pry off the front cover.
3. Lay unit on it's side so that the 3 screws on the front are facing up.
4. Remove the 3 screws on the front of the unit.
5. Slide the cover towards the back of the unit to remove it.
6. Disconnect the leads plugged into the F2 terminals on the batteries.
7. Remove batteries.
8. Insert new batteries and reconnect the leads.
When I plugged the unit into my BR1500G UPS it basically tripled my estimated runtime per the PowerChute software. Which is exactly as expected since the BR1500G contains two batteries and the external battery pack contain four additional batteries. My reported runtime is now 96 minutes with 233 watts draw. I found no fan inside this external battery.
The BR1500G contained 2 Kung Long WP1236W batteries. 12V 9ah 36W. Made in Vietnam. This external battery pack contained 4 CSB HR 1234W F2 batteries 12V 9ah 34W.
Still rating it 5 stars. Although I'm disappointed about difficulty to replace batteries when the time comes.
Also, I'm really curious to know if the BR1500G is able to inform the user when the external battery needs replacement or if it just gives a general replace battery message for all batteries. Looking forward to seeing future reviews.
1st let me say, if you get any of the three UPS boxes here, don't pay more than $175 tops. For whatever reason, several vendors are trying to sell these for as much as $330 each. Don’t pay that. All 3 versions are normally around $150-$175 from most vendors.
The BR1500G has a unique connector that none of the other UPS backups have. This connector allows a BR24BPG Battery expansion box to be added for 3 times the battery up time found on the BR1500G alone. The expansion pack was very hard to find online and impossible to get locally. Also seems everyone wanted to sell the newer BX1500G. Be aware that the BX1500G is newer but is a lesser unit. The BX1500G does not support the upgrade pack and charges slower and doesn’t have AVR Trim function. Don’t buy the BX1500 if you can get the BR1500G. The BR1500G is the superior of the two UPS models. The BR model is better than the BX models. I have both the BR UPS and expansion pack and the BX standalone model. Consider buying the BR1500G and BR24BPG together as you might not be able to get them individually later. I’m guessing the BR are the older versions as none of the 20 or so stores I visited had them in stock except Amazon and NewEgg. Don’t get me wrong, BX1500Gs are still good UPSs but the BR1500G is better. Don’t buy ones that have been sitting in a store or warehouse for more than a few months as the batteries will probably be bad. These batteries will die if not regularly charged.
This BR1500G and BX1500G UPS each have 2 of 9ah 12V batteries hooked together as a 24V supply. If you need to replace the batteries they slide in and out easily keeping high currents away from you. You will have to open the case to unmount the 4 batteries in the expansion pack.
The battery expansion BR24BPG gives you 4 more batteries (6 total in both units). So you could theoretically keep devices powered 3 times as long than the BR1500G could by itself. The battery expansion has no use by itself and will only work when paired with a BR1500G. In my case it gave me a lot more up time and I would highly recommend you get both of these units at once for maximum up time. You won't increase the BR1500Gs 1500VA-865W rating of output by adding the expansion unit. You will only increase the time it will run the devices plugged into it. The BR1500G will completely handle the charging and discharging of batteries from both it's own unit and the expansion unit. If any of the 6 batteries wear out (2 in this one 4 in the expansion) it will alert you to that effect. If you want to buy the BX1500Gs, you will need to buy 3 of them to get the same time as just 1 BR1500G and 1 Expansion battery pack.
There is a fan in the BR1500G and BX1500G that runs sporadically even when the batteries or inverter aren't running. It must be temp controlled. It's not any louder than my PC fans but might disturb people sensitive to white noise volume. The only way to stop it from running is to turn off the UPS completely.
I have two 3D printers and long LED strips in the top of the shelving they sit in. When power goes out, these printers stop printing and cannot recover the print jobs. The prints they were working on are ruined. VERY FRUSTRATING. In the apartment I live in, I get brownouts or power outages of less than an hour a few times a week. I can lose a lot of print time and expense due to this. I now have the BX1500G running my 3D printers and lights and accessories. All my other critical electronics (Computer system, audio/video system, some lights) run from the BR1500G and the BR24BPG expansion pack. I now get about 30 minutes for the audio/video stuff and over an hour for my 3D printers. I try to keep the backed up critical devices on the UPSs around 50-75% of the available load. Its a little hard to judge the 3D printers as they bounce around fast between 75W and 500W. So they’re more unpredictable and all on the backup sockets.
The switch to battery power and back to line current is quick. My electronics doesn't know there was any issue with power. It keeps them running smoothly. My computer and devices seem to be OK with getting square wave approximations of sine waves that these units put out. But be aware some PCs and devices might need true RMS inputs to work. That’s when you will need to buy the really expensive UPSs (usually over $300 for 1500VA).
As to longevity, I can't judge yet because I haven't owned these units very long. The supplemental pack is only batteries, and is totally dependent on how good those batteries are. The UPS units have lots more things that could go wrong as they house all the "smarts" of the UPS system as a whole. I spent many years installing Tripplite and APC power backups and have always like them both. But that was years ago and sometimes brands change. So hopefully these three units I bought still have the reliability of those I used to install years ago.
I did note one thing in the instructions and warranty info that says that APC will require the customer to pay for the shipping to them for all warranty repairs. It also says they will send you a reconditioned unit back. They pay to ship it back. Not cool after paying for a new unit that APC will send a reconditioned one back. I took a star away because of that policy which isn’t in the ads which induced me to buy from them.
I have not yet installed the software but intend to eventually. I will come back here and update that info after I have a chance to evaluate it. You don't have to install the software to use these UPS devices but it does give you more tweaking options with the UPS attached to a computer. It also can tell you info about the events and power history.
Lastly, I want to commend APC on the beauty of these cases for all 3 units. The black plastic looks fantastic and fits right in with my black audio/video and computer equipment and 3D printers. Looks so much better than the clunky looking boxes of some other brands. You could have these chassis fronts exposed to view and no one would realize they are not part of the electronics system.
Use a Kill A Watt meter or something similar (they're cheap) to find out what your equipment will pull before buying a UPS. Get both the peak VA and wattage settings of each device you will install onto a UPS. You'll generally see the UPS units sold by their peak VA ratings and sometimes by their wattage. Then double the totals your equipment uses and only buy UPSs that will meet double your requirements. Also don't try to run everything on the backup side. Plan what you will put in each socket (as they can have different functions depending on where you plug them in). Only put your critical stuff on the backup side. Also figure out if you even need the Master/Slave on/off functionality or turn that feature off. Everything else, put on surge only sockets. If you want more up time, choose a device you can do without during a power outage and move it over to the surge only side. There is a nifty overload indicator too that tells you if you are hitting the VA or wattage limit of this UPS. Doing your research on how your devices use electricity will help you decide how to connect your devices to the UPS.
If you have a lot of stuff you want on battery backup, you woild do better to divide your power needs into subsytems and run each subsystem from its own UPS. Its far better to have several small UPS units, each running their own subsystem, than to have one huge UPS that powers everything.
This unit also has some nice displays that tell you lots of info about what your power loads are doing. You can set this unit up to have the display always on or just for a few seconds after you press the button. The blue light looks nice and can be shut off if you sleep in that room or just want to save the watt or two it uses. Just don't take the number of minutes leff too seriously. Unless your equipment is very steady wattage drains, your wattage jumping up and down makes it hard to give accurate time left sort of predictions.
Also it needs to be said that you should NEVER HOOK THIS UNIT TO A POWER STRIP OR HOOK A POWER STRIP TO IT. Also never daisy chain one UPS to another. I used to install these and you could kill your devices or cause a fire if you don't heed that advise. (US) Plug this unit directly into the wall socket and don't convert it's 3 prong socket to two. You must use a 3 prong socket. Also you should plug every device you want it to run directly into the back without power strips. Surge suppressors and line regulators in power strips can adversely effect how this unit deals with power problems. If you need to use an extension cord, use a really high amperage heavy duty one that itself has no surge protection. Use only one extension cord per device for the outputs and be sure it will handle that device’s peak wattage. This may sound trivial, but many backup UPS units have been ruined or rendered useless by extension cords and defective power strips or surge suppressors. 1500VA is a lot of current and it could result in a fire if you don’t take reasonable care of these units. Keep flammable things away from the UPS units and don’t cover them up or stuff them into cabinets. They need air flow to safely operate.
In summation, I like these APC units a lot and even more so with the expansion unit. I'd definitely recommend them. But be careful choosing models. As explained above, a few different letters or numbers in the model number can and generally does make those models quite different.
