The APC Backups Connect BGE90M system offers guaranteed power protection for networking equipment (router, modem) and other low power devices (smart devices, VoIP or cordless phones, home automation and security systems). When power is disrupted due to storms or outages, the BGE70 keeps you connected to your network for up to 3 hours and charges smart devices. Get weather updates, make phone/video calls, check email, update social media, stream movies, and maintain home automation/security during extended power outages. The Backups Connect BGE90M is an innovative UPS that is designed to power networking equipment for prolonged periods during blackouts. Run a router, modem and another low-power device (power a VoIP or cordless phone, maintain your home security system) for 4.5 hours during a power outage. Additionally, 2 USB charging ports power smartphones and tablets during extended blackouts. Access to the internet is a critical component of our personal and professional lives. Unfortunately, a power outage breaks our line of communication for business operations, news and weather updates, and restricts us from contacting friends and family. At APC by Schneider Electric, we understand the network is critical to your everyday life. Backups Connect will keep your network running, even when the power goes out.

In the past I had my cable modem, router, and Ethernet switch all on my desk in my home office, so all were plugged into the same UPS that runs my desktop computer. When we moved a few months ago, the home office in my new house is now at one end of the house - not ideal spot for Wi-Fi for the house, so I wanted to locate the modem & router in another room, and the Ethernet switch went in the basement for convenience of wiring up a couple computers and a printer spread around the house.
I no sooner finished wiring everything up, when I realized - what happens with one of our famous power glitches? I'm going to lose Internet. What I need is a couple of very compact UPS's that just power the small electronics (modem & Time Capsule router at one location, and Ethernet switch at another). Wonder if anyone makes something small & inexpensive...
Sure enough this BGE70 is just about tailor-made for my situation. I had already built an enclosed cabinet for the modem & router that had plenty of room for extra wiring for a stereo system, no problem adding this in there. In the basement, I'd wall-mounted the Ethernet switch and a patch panel - the hanging slots on the BGE70 let me mount it up right alongside.
I like that the battery is easily accessible & replaceable for when that time comes (as it always does with a UPS). It's also a fairly standard and easy to buy battery, which does affect the form factor (there are some more compact UPS's that almost look like an oversized power strip - but good luck finding a replacement battery in 4 years). I like that the alarm beeps ONCE during a power outage, and doesn't keep chiming away like most UPS's.
I haven't really experienced any blackouts in my area, so I'm not really in demand of any big UPS (and most big UPS would probably not be able to power a full on gaming rig for long anyway, and nowadays most people are going with phones/tablets/laptops more than big rigs, so...keeping the INTERNET going is probably the only demand if the power ever goes out), but this small thing does its job in keeping my internet steady for hours on end, while I turn house power off to do electrical work around the house.
I'd rather sink money into a generator then buy a big UPS (they're $100+ already, put in a few more benjamins and you'd be able to have longer electricity...even then I got a Prius that I can use as a sort of generator with a power converter should power ever really go out for when I need more electricity).
This little guy does the job. 3 electrical sockets, and two usb (usb fans to cool my router)
