It is important to test your aquarium water weekly to verify good quality in addition to a bi-weekly partial water change of no more than 25% to help reduce toxic buildup, remove debris the filter missed, and replenish the oxygen available to fish.

Feed Your Fish Daily

Feed your fish twice daily with API Fish Food which contains nutritionally enhanced proteins, allowing for easy uptake of nutrients and maximum absorption, resulting in less excrement for clear, clean water. Only give the amount of food fish can eat in 2 to 3 minutes depending on the species. Some fish such as bottom feeders and algae eaters will need up to 30 minutes to 2 hours. Take time to observe fish and the water temperature to ensure they are active & healthy.

Test Water Quality Weekly

An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API Master Test Kits or API 5-In-1 Test Strips. It is also a good time to add API Stress Zyme to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.

Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks

In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API Stress Coat.

Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly

It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API Quick Start to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

PLEASE DON'T BASH A PRODUCT BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T READ THE DESCRIPTION AND THE PRODUCT WAS NOT INTENDED FOR WHAT YOU ARE USING IT FOR!! The title is clear, "Aquarium Pharmaceuticals 63L Phosphate Test Kit FOR FRESH OR SALT WATER AQUARIUMS"

This is not meant to offend or make anyone look stupid but I just hate to see people bash a product just because it wasn't made for their application, which if you read the description for this kit, you can easily see that this product is made for aquariums, NOT POOLS! Also, for someone to think that this is used to remedy Phosphate problems...it says "test kit" and literally says no where in the description that it remedies anything. Even the name of the company is "AQUARIUM Pharmaceuticals"...keyword "Aquarium". Mistakes happen, but regardless of this product being listed in the wrong area, if people would just read the description before hitting "Add to Cart", then these issues wouldn't occur. And if you're still unsure, contact the manufacturer or do a simple Google search...

It's not the products fault that Amazon listed it in the wrong category. READ!!!

Works well, not too difficult

This has been really useful in checking out my GH/KH levels. In particular, the GH test was handy when raising my GH a little bit for my snails and mollies.

I know some have said the colors are hard to distinguish. I didn't find that to be true. The colors are pretty light, but as long as the tube is up against a white background it is pretty clear if the GH one is pale green or pale orange, or the KH one is blue or yellow. If you are mildly colorblind this might be rather hard.

Being a titration test, you basically add one drop, shake it, and look at the color. Repeat until it changes, counting drops. This is fine for me, but if you have very high hardness it might take a while to run the test. My tap is 7dGH and 5dKH, and I raise the GH to 10. 10 drops doesn't take too terribly long.

I bought this kit because I had a Betta with what appeared to be fin rot. I suspected it was actually fin biting, but decided to monitor the tank's ammonia levels anyway. This kit is by far the most economical - for the amount of tests included for the price.

After 2 weeks of 0-.25 readings without fluctuation, I wondered if the tests were even accurate. I decided to test 5ml of pure ammonia instead. Imagine my disappointment when the pure ammonia sample turned the same yellow (0%). Before you go sending hate mail to API, there's a good reason for this. It turns out, the ammonia level was too high and essentially "blew out" the testing liquid. API is assuming your fish isn't living in pure ammonia and, therefore, didn't make this kit to test levels that high.

Next, I tested 5ml of water from a 1 gallon jug filled with tap water and 1 drop of pure ammonia. Yes, I apparently have too much time on my hands and a latent mad scientist gene. This test proved accurate. The tube turned dark green almost instantly (picture attached). I feel much more secure using and believing this test now.

Poor resolution

I buy these kits over and over again because I haven't found a comparable replacement at a price point I like. It's okay. Would buy again, and again, and again. It's good enough for what I need for my planted tank: am I good? vs should I dose NO3? vs should I do an extra water change?.

Here's the thing though: a few years ago the freshwater color card (used to read the NO3 level) went from having 7 clear colors to choose from to having a muddled mess. At the low end of the range (where you would want your water to be), the colors are clear and decipherable. At the middle part of the range (where I tend to find things a bit too often), the colors start to look the same. Maybe it's just my eyes. I can see subtle variation between 10ppm and 20ppm and between 40ppm and 80ppm, but it's not enough to tell the difference when actually performing a measurement. Instead, I just split the difference and go with a generic "orange" is 15ppm and "red" is 60ppm. I can still pick out an intermediate "red/orange" that's around 30ppm, but I'd appreciate having a real color card capable of full resolution.

I run a freshwater aquarium and I am facing an algae issue. I was wondering where the phosphate might be coming from so I was looking for a reliable test kit. I chose this test kit due the high level of stars rank but the point with this test is that the color scale in the lowest ranges is absolutely impossible to differentiate. How can a human being read a difference of color between 0 and 0.25 ppm or between 1.0 and 2.0 ppm for the freshwater scale? And I am far from being color blind!! What the point in using a test kit to get a scientific measurement when the color scale is not readable. Not to mention the saltware color scale for which you cannot discern between 0.5 and almost 2.0 ppm. This test night be a good thing to get an idea of what the level of phospahte could be in your tank but is useless in getting a precise measurement. I think that maybe there should be 2 separate products, one for freshwater and another for saltwater.

Works fine if you're not needing precise numbers. If you have a saltwater tank with coral, go with Salifert or Hanna.
