Tank: Mine actually feels fairly sturdy, and so far I haven't had any issues with the plastic fogging up like I have with other acrylic tanks. Also, it's not blue like the picture unless you put a blue background or blue gravel in it. You're only going to want 1 lb of gravel; I've got two in there and it's a little too much.
Hood and light: The plastic plate to keep fish from zapping themselves on the light is sturdy and fit snugly inside the hood housing; you've really got to press it in there. You'll know it's seated right when there's about 1/4" between the edge of the hood and where the plate sits. The light does produce a lot of heat and replacing it with an LED bulb works very well for limiting how hot the tank gets. Personally, I use a 7.5W Hydor heater under the gravel, which keeps the tank at a balmy 80 degrees without any help.
Plant: not included in the package, and not even listed on the box; Amazon's product description is in error there.
Air pump, tube, and air stone: The air pump is, strangely enough, one of the quietest I've ever found. And you can't buy this anywhere else. It's good that they provide a replacement part order sheet inside the box the tank comes in; you can order all the individual parts separately for fairly cheap.Read more ›
First, if you want a small 1 gallon tank this is far better than a fish bowl. The filtration system works well but you do need to leave the air pump on most of the time. The air pump (1.9W, 120V) has a good kick and produces a lot of strong bubbles BUT it does vibrate quite a bit, which disturbed my Betta before he got used to it. You will need to purchase 1 lb of gravel for the bottom to hold the filter in place. Also, Bettas appreciate a place to hide and a place to sleep near the water surface, so purchase a 7" broad leafed silk plant and/or a Betta Leaf with suction cup on it for him. I think a mini Betta Log would fit in this, but I can't be certain until I get one.
The light is bright and gets pretty hot. Which is good if you have a Betta. Just don't leave it on more than a couple of hours. My bulb went out after 2 weeks, I am looking into maybe finding a LED replacement.
Depending on which way you are looking, you can see a reflection of your fish. I don't think the fish can see themselves, thought.
There is no extra spaces in the cover for any other appliance such as heater. There is only a light space and an air tube space. You could put it in the feeding hole, but it block a of viewing your little buddy.
Sometimes my betta gets bored and examines all possible routes of escape. I will be upgrading him to a bigger tank as soon as possible, and keep this one as an emergency tank.
I docked it a star simply because the box said great for Bettas, and it really is too small, and the air pump is so loud and vibrates like crazy.
I have to say for $10, it is a great deal! It comes with the tank, hood, light bulb, light bulb holder, air pump, air hose, air stone and undergravel filter plate. What more can you ask for!
One of the reviews here stated that 'it was one of the quietest air pump she had came across', I say what nonsense. The air pump is light and with the air hose, it is hard to keep it stable. Besides that, it is so light that it vibrates whereever you put it. Right now, I have it wrapped in a towel and placed in a box. It helps but not a lot. I blame the design of the pump, it does not include any sort of sound-proofing in its design.
Now to the filtering ability, the air pump and filter plate acts as form of undergravel filtering. It works fine so far, with weekly partial water changes.
To be honest, if you are any bit serious about fish keeping, get a 3gal tank at least, more if you have the space. There are many kits out there. Even though it might be more expensive, it will be better for the fish in the long run.
There is nothing terrible about this kit but it is just too small.
p.s. gravel and plastic plants are not included. If you are gonna keep tropical fishes, you will need a water heater too.

Ok, so my kit did not come with any instructions but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to assemble it. I had it up and running in minutes. Added a Betta, after it had cycled. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Bee C.
