After installing a nearly silent Corsair HX520W power supply (highly recommend), the AMD OEM fan was unpleasantly loud (previously drowned out by the old PSU). I installed the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro rev.2 cooler, and "WOW!", what a difference. The CPU fan is now only a faint whisper -- and this is with a case that has a port above the CPU venting the CPU fan directly to the outside. And on top of being nearly silent, the Alpine 64 dropped my CPU temp 10°C to 36°. The only sound I hear now from this very open case is the whir of the hard drives.

re: another reviewers comments on durability - I had no problems installing this cooler. As you can see from the pictures, the fan frame is lightly constructed -- but it's certainly more than strong enough to do its job of supporting the fan. Unless you're a moose and mash down on the obviously slender frame, I don't foresee having any problems. The installation directions are mostly pictures, and one point is somewhat vague -- when installing the hold-down clip, loosen *both* the clip screws all the way till the clips come loose, then tight just enough so the clips don't fall off -- this provides slack to slip the clips under the "hooks" on the CPU socket mounting bracket. Once both the clips have engaged their hooks, tighten the screws, alternating a few turns at a time on each screw, until they're fully tightened, so as to equalize pressure on both sides.

Every now and then I encounter a product that removes any buyer's remorse. This is one such product. I was seeking an inexpensive CPU cooling solution for a secondary computer that was still using the stock AMD cooling fan. Since this system is not our primary use computer I couldn't justify spending a lot of money just to replace the louder stock heat sink and fan. I was not concerned about lowering CPU temperatures, just making the system quieter while not hurting the cooling of the computer. This fan and heat sink work perfectly with that goal in mind - at least on the modest AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ processor on which it was installed. My experience based on this hardware was:

- Extremely quiet operation compared to stock AMD heat sink/fan
- 2-degree celsuis lower CPU temperature than stock cooling solution
- Extremely simple installation on AM2 socket (loosen two screws, attach clips to stock mounting bracket on system board and tighten screws)

The larger fan and lower operating speed no doubt are the biggest reasons this cooler is so much quieter than the stock fan - it runs about 1500 rpm slower than the stock CPU fan after the system has been on for over 30 minutes. Regardeless of the reason, it has satisfied my primary goal - quiet cooling at a low cost.

Overall this CPU cooler is just an excellent value.

Using it with AMD FX6300 125W CPU. Installation is a little bit awkward and requires a screwdriver (read the included manual), but it is much quieter than the AMD-supplied cooler. There are even quieter coolers in $50+ range, but this is a great deal for the price.

I was getting occasional random reboots and BSOD's with the PC running on a Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H motherboard and AMD A10-7850K APU . They weren't frequent but they did occur with some regularity. I downloaded a temp monitoring program (HWMonitor) and noticed the CPU was showing 74-78C consistently, despite also having two 120mm chassis fans. I thought this was too high. Temp readings in the BIOS confirmed this.

I built my PC, but I left the rather noisy stock cooler on that came with my FM2+ socket APU and never thought anymore about it. I'd never had a computer get fried due to overheating, and so far in my life all the stock coolers were adequate.

This time, however, it appeared that an upgrade would be in order. After some research and review reading, I ordered the ARCTIC Alpine 64 GT Rev 2 CPU Cooler and Antec Thermal Grease Compound.

Shipment came in two days via Prime, packaged well, no damage. I carefully removed the old paste from the APU as well as the factory paste on the ARCTIC with rubbing alcohol and applied the aftermarket paste to the heatsink of the ARCTIC cooler and mounted it to the 7850K. It snapped right into place with minimal fuss, very easy, no screw tightening or motherboard removal required in my mini-ATX case.

Temps immediately dropped to 32 C and held under heavy load at 40-42 C. I could always hear the old fan and and when it spun up you could hear it from across the room. Now I have to keep checking the case to see if it's on, as it is very quiet.

Not bad for a total of 12 bucks. I will be getting another one for our home server.

UPDATE 6-25-15: Well our AC went out yesterday and it got up to 90 F inside. The CPU never cracked 50 C...so far so good!

I'm using this on an AMD A6 3500 Llano APU for my main HTPC. It's literally silent at normal speed -- 12dBa measured at 1 inch.

I'm sure this isn't suitable for overclocking, or really anything heavily loaded -- for an AMD Llano HTPC, it's cheap and extremely efective!

Shipped quickly and on time delivery. Installed just as easy. It's a fan, it makes a little noise, not enough to be an irritant. A lot quieter than the previous Intel stock fan which is what I was hoping for.

Have a great day!
