btw: To everyone who takes the time and effort to write reviews, good and bad, thanks. I rely heavily on your opinions and try to reciprocate when I can.
The speakers are small but put out quite a bit of sound which I like because my desk is kind of small and I don't like clutter on it anyway, so I can keep these right underneath either side of my monitor.
The bass is noticeably missing which was expected for a cheap pair of speakers, however I am still surprised at the range of sound the speakers deliver.
If the speakers are on and volume at its regular level and no sound is playing you can hear a fairly loud buzz/static/ring coming from both speakers. I have checked the wires and I have checked using other speakers and headphones to make sure it wasn't my motherboard. These cheapo speakers just have a very poor quality noise filter or none at all. I find they work best if I turn up my system volume all the way, and keep the speaker volume down low, which minimizes the buzz, but it is still noticeable when not playing music. I have to turn the speaker volume all the way down when they are not in use, otherwise they drive me crazy. During use it is hard to notice the buzz.
If I had to do it all over again, I would spend an extra 7 bucks and get the equivalent Logitech model (S220) with included sub. The only reason why these speakers get more than 1 star is because they were only 15 bucks and still very usable as long as the volume is adjusted properly or turned all the way down when the speakers are not in use.
You plug one of these into both your USB port and your headphone jack (on a Mac anyway) and the other speaker then plugs into the first one. Initially adjust volume dial on back of the first speaker (it controls both speakers), and then you can add/subtract volume from your keyboard as usual.
I will update this review if these fail or disappoint in some way later.
First I wanted speakers that were small so they would take up little real estate on my desktop. These speakers fit the bill, They are only 3" cubed, think size of a post it note. They easily fit under the monitor stand on my desk. These are a great size for someone who wants portable speakers to attach to laptop or cell phone. They also have a usb plug instead of electric plug, so you can power them from your laptop or power bank if using a cell phone.
Secondly I wanted speakers with no subwoofer and and little to no bass. I live in a apartment and if I listen to music any higher than what a cell phone without earphones might play, my upstairs neighbors complain. Since low frequencies travel the easiest and farthest, I wanted speakers with very little to no bass. Theses speakers fit that bill. They do not include a subwoofer. Having only a two inch speaker driver, they provide basically no bass at all. The frequency range on these speakers is very limited, but keep in mind you are spending less that $15 and they have a 2" speaker driver without separate tweeter and woofers. So you can expect a decent volume, but there will be no bass, reduced mids and they may sound a little muddled. But for the price and size, the sound is acceptable. If you want really clear sound with bass and a wide range of sound, then you will need to spend a little more and order speakers with larger drivers and separate components. I did find playing with the Beats equalizer on my computer helped the sound a little.
My only gripe with these speakers is that the cords are very short. The 3.5mm cord that plugs into the back of the cpu barely allowed the speakers to reach my desktop. Also the cord between two speakers is very short, so you will not be able to place the speakers on each side of a desk. They will fit on each side of a large monitor though.
Overall the build quality is decent, the speakers have a little weight to them. They take up very little room on a desktop and are easily portable. If you keep in mind the price point and size of speaker driver, the sound is acceptable.
Update: 8/19/16- after playing with the beats equalizer on my computer I was able to get a little better sound out of them and hear the voices a little clearer. Keep in mind with this, they still not produce any bass, but that is what I was looking for, so I am very happy :)
