I’ve gotten to using the smooth sides more for sketching and rougher designs and notes and the actual watercolor side for my more polished designs. If you’re overly concerned about streamlining your sketchbooks this is probably going to annoy you. Also the corner edges of the entire pad are inconsistent, but that doesn’t bother me.
For the money and value it’s decent, for travel or pre-composition, it’s decent. If you’re looking to sketch, paint and sell directly off these papers I wouldn’t recommend it.
For the manufacturer- I would really love to see the papers bound in the same directions. If that one tiny tweak was made, I would never stop buying these journals for life; as it is now, I’m still looking for a replacement.
So, in a fit of disgust, I ordered the Arteza pair -- BETTER THAN SLICED BREAD -- I really can't believe how beautifully made these books are. One side of the page is smooth, the obverse is lightly textured.
Arteza was thinking when they designed these books -- the pages aren't just dual-sided they are dual sided in such a way that every spread has the same surface on both pages. The bindings are sewn, the paper has weight to it, and the cloth covers are a nice touch.
The only negative, as far as I can see isx that they are printed and bound in China -- I would gladly pay an extra dollar per book if they were created elsewhere -- Czechoslovakia, Italy, France, Spain, Japan, Portugal, etc .
Anyway I will have to get a lot better to be worthy of these books!

The paper has a nice light tooth that gives a fine grain to the watercolours. It works very well wet in wet and layers very well too. It holds the water off for a while and takes longer to dry but that appears to stop it from acting like a sponge and buckling at the first sign of water. Hasn't bled through with anything I've tried yet. They are a great size for a winter coat pocket or to fit into a small field bag.
These are a really good alternative to the likes of moleskine, cheaper too per book. I know you have to pay for 2 but they're worth it.
Highly recommended for a plein air, urban sketcher or an armchair artist! One of the best pads I've tried.
