The GEL-Kayano 19 features a GEL cushioning system in both the front and rear of shoe for maximum flexibility and shock absorption.

First some stats: Male, early 30s, moderate build, run maybe once or twice a week between 3-8 miles. These are my SECOND pair of Kayano 19s. I am training for a marathon and wouldn't want any other model than the Kayano 19.
The shoe fits perfectly from the time you put them on. The do not run small or big. If you are a 7.5, get a 7.5 (if you can't get to a store and try them on which is the BEST thing to do before you buy a running shoe). There is no 'breaking in' period. They are comfortable from the first time you run in them and remaining comfortable throughout. Personally, if a salesperson suggests to you that a shoes has a 'breaking in' period I think they're trying to sell you swamp land. High end running shoes do not need to be broken in!
The mesh makes them very breathable. Your feet will not over heat. I've had my first pair for over a year and the uppers look like new. The outsole has worn down, but that is because of extensive use over the last year. They wear less than my previous brand's outsoles for comparison.
The upper part of the heal support is rigid. I made the mistake of slipping on the shoe (instead of untying the laces and putting them on properly) and the back of the heal support bent inwards a bit. However, this was my fault for trying to save a minute by slipping them on instead of taking the time to untie them, put them on and tie them. This slight bend did not affect the comfort/performance of the shoe.
Lastly, as someone who was never a runner and slowly (and painfully) increased my mileage over the last 2 years, there is something that needs to be said about pain. If you are a beginner (or even someone who runs regularly and wants to increase mileage) you have to understand that there will be pain. Your knees might hurt. Your back might hurt. Your shins might hurt. This does not mean there is something wrong with your shoe! These are the normal pains associated with getting in shape. Blaming the shoe is just an excuse to not get in shape because people say "I just can't find the right shoe" and quit. Running and being in shape is not just about having the right shoe. Educate yourself about nutrition, water intake and training moderation while you are on your journey to get fit (or get fitter). That's all part of it. There is no one path to the goal. If the Kayano doesn't work for you, there's probably not a shoe out there that will.
Cons: Probably not the best shoe for runners with normal pronation. Experienced Achilles Tendinitis.
I have gone through about 500 miles (around the typical life of running shoe) with this pair of Kayano 19 that I purchased 6 months back. I run for around 7-10 miles every alternate day and have been doing that for last few years. For last 6 months I have been having dull pain in the lower back foot ( a.k.a Achilles Tendinitis). I didn't do anything unusual in my routine of intensity to blame the pain on other than changing the shoe from ASICS Kinsie 4 to Kayano 19.
Being an ASICS fan for years, I ordered Nimbus 15 and have been running with them for last 8 weeks. Nimbus has been advertised as a shoe for runners who have normal pronation and don't need much of support (please don't confuse support with cushion as they are two separatethings). I worked great and pain has been reducing slowly.
Bottomline: Don't buy these shoes if you don't know exactly what kind of pronation your running stride have. Kayano 19 may work great for people who need support but for otherwise runners with normal pronation, you might want to consider other options.
I would give 3 stars and not 1 as I would attribute lack of my knowledge and due diligence before making the purchase.
This is an expensive shoe, but I think trust that Asic is putting in extra money for the quality control of this shoe.
Peeve: in two runs, my laces came untied 3 times... twice right foot, once left foot. Aesthetically, I like the stiffer shoe laces and they look sharp. However, I think you have to tie them down tighter than normal laces. But this is such a small point compare to how great my legs feel after running in these shoes.
After getting these shoes, I realized something. I am an idiot for leaving these shoes.
Putting them on for the first time, I thought that they would be too firm. But once I started my run, all insecurities were gone. There is a reason that this is the 19th version of this shoe, it's fantastic.
The ride is great, the look is eye catching (lime green trim!) I'm a larger runner, and the feel and support of this shoe is great. I will never stray from the Gel-Kayano again!
Just bought my second pair...can't get enough of this shoe.
