ASICS: History and Heritage
After the second world war, ASICS founder Kihachiro Onitsuka observed children wandering the streets barefoot, and decided to help the youth of his country. By promoting the values of Sport, and providing them with high quality athletic shoes to help them perform their best, he believed he could help the children of Japan build a better future with the philosophy of Anima Sana In Corpore Sano: “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.” In 1949, Onitsuka Co. was born, and soon after, the first ever footwear was released from the fledgling brand: a basketball shoe called the “Tiger.” In the years that followed, Onitsuka Co. (re-named “ASICS” in 1977) designed a myriad of scientifically sound, sport-specific shoes for athletes. Mr. Onitsuka’s emphasis on the spirit of Sport and a focus on the needs of the athlete continue today with ASICS, Onitsuka Tiger, And ASICS Tiger shoes, clothing, and accessories. Our dedication to never stop bettering our best reflects our desire to help you, the athlete, to always Better Your Best.
Pump up your adrenaline with the Asics Kayano 21 Men athletic shoe. The open mesh on the upper offers breathable exposure while FluidFit and Personal Heel Fit (PHF) possess stretch mesh and memory foam lining for a snug fit. It has reinforced vamp and the Heel Clutching System that uses an exoskeleton structure covers the heel to provide a comfortable fit. It has ComforDry Sockliner composed of antibacterial material to minimize odor and wick moisture. Strobel Last with the upper is stitched to SpEVA 55 Foam, for greater cushioning. Rearfoot Gel, Forefoot Gel cushioning and Discrete Heel render excellent shock absorption. With FluidRide technology, Guidance Line, Dynamic DuoMax Support System, Guidance Trusstic System and Impact Guidance System, it decreases foot stress and lets you maintain a confident gait. The ASICS High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) in the heel, Rear Foot Crash Pad, and DuraSponge Outsole in the forefoot lend superiror grip on all surfaces. The Asics Kayano 21 Men athletic shoe imparts amazing performance and comfort.
In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

I just got these out for a run. My right foot suffers from plantar facilitis and within .25 miles these shoes actually made my foot feel better to the point where I couldn't feel anything but normal smooth contact with the ground. The cushioning just cradled my foot and the structure provided a solid brace to keep the foot from developing any injury. Once again, this is a great shoe and provides exactly what I need Asa moderate runner in training for his 4th marathon.
Follow up: The heel padding broke out of the right shoe. If I don't wear a band aid for my 5-6 mile run I come home with the back half of my non cotton sock soaked in blood.
I have several hundred (perhaps approaching 2000) miles in various generations of Kayanos. The 21 is one of the better looking iterations, and the Lightning/Royal/Black is less purple than the picture implies. I have to lace my left shoe for heel slippage, and the laces are apparently shorter than on the 20, but they're still (just) long enough to get the job done. Beyond that, I haven't noticed a significant difference from the 20's so far.
I've never thought the Kayano had enough cushion on the ball of the foot for my heavy stride. Combining them with the Superfeet Orange insole fixes that nicely.
UPDATE. I couldn't really deal with the narrowness of the shoe in the toe region and had to exchange it for the 4E (Amazon had no issues with that).. since it's the only black colored width size available aside from the standard D width. I'm happy with it. Will probably get 4Es from now on until they come out with a black 3E or 2E. Great shoe.
