In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

These are unique shoes. From the ball of the foot to the heel there's an external layer (for additional lateral support?).It's attached to the shoe at the sole and the back of the heel and continues up to the eyes for lacing. Although attractive, it does raise the potential for something such as a pebble or a twig getting between this layer and the main body of the shoe. For this reason I only use these shoes in the gym.
As others have mentioned, the laces are too short (about 4 inches). I've also found that my feet get hot in these shoes, so I use a lighter sock than I would normally. This isn't a problem as the fit is still good and the interior of the shoe doesn't have any irritating seams.
Overall I'd recommend these for just about any gym activity.
They looked really nice but that is about where the good ended for me. I did not like how stiff they felt. They did not feel like they moved with me, they were just kind of hard. They also seemed kind of bulky. I pretty much knew after a couple of hours they I did not like them. Plus the shoelaces were SUPER short and you can barely tie them. I ended up returning them and buying a pair of Nike Women's Dual Fusion St 2 Running Shoes which are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned! http://www.amazon.com/Nike-Running-Shoes-UniversityBl-MetllcSlvr-BrightCR/dp/B00HHJC27Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394745172&sr=8-2&keywords=nike+dual+fusion+st+2
