This book is great for people making the transition to ASP.NET from other programming languages or as a second ASP.NET book. It skips over many programming basics such as variables and control structures and dives straight into features that are more unique to ASP.NET. I use it in conjunction with Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET (also an excellent book) that provides coverage of more introductory topics.
Two things that I particularly like about this book are: 1) Stephen Walther's direct and non-pretentious writing style and 2) his excellent choice of topics and examples. The examples demonstrate realistic programming tasks, rather than focusing on cool technology features that you may never use.
In response to the reviewer who knocked him for not using code-behind, I am grateful that he didn't. In my opinion, code-behind adds little benefit to improving program readability or maintainability (unlike business objects or user-controls which are invaluable). I understand that Microsoft has received a lot of complaints about Visual Studio's required use of code-behind and VS 2005 will support single-file applications. For the short examples used in the book code-behind would only detract from the points that the author is trying to convey.
Overall, I highly recommend this book.
