perfect for an HTPC build

Bought this all-in-one gem for a dedicated HTPC build for a convention I work at and was very happy overall with the build and quality of this board. Not only does it integrate all the standard video connectors (VGA, DVI, and HDMI) but it also has 7.1 sound and even a digital out via spdif, too so it solves all my connection issues in one, compact solution.

Pros:
- size: mobo is less than 8" square so it makes for a very compact build
- video / audio connectors: has all the standard connections without having to add any expansion cards, ready to go out the box
- pci-e expansion slot: if I'm wont for something else to add to this board, it has the one expansion slot (although I can't for the life of me think of what it would be)
- price: great price for a great board

Neutral:
- I've heard others have had issues with the stock fan, but so far so good for me
- I wish this had an IDE / PATA connector on it so I could use all these old drives I have, but I knew that before going in so can't really knock against it
- I also wish it had a USB 3.0 port, but again, I knew this beforehand, so can't really deduct for that, either.

Cons:
- The only real issue I had with this was installing a SATA drive on it. For whatever reason, it wouldn't recognize my Raptor drive I had available for the build. No matter what setting I used, it wouldn't recognize the drive. I then resorted to going to an older PATA drive with a SATA adapter and it recognized it right away and I easily installed the OS on that drive. Once I got everything up and running, I cloned it back to the Raptor drive and bammo chango, it started to work and continues to this day... shrug, it works now but it was rather frustrating.

Overall, I'm very happy with it and would definitely buy the board again for another HTPC build.

I gave this mobo a four star only because as a Linux user, the built in ATI video controller does not have a suitable matching driver for it. I only had to utilize the pciex slot to install a Nvidia card I had from my old build. Everything is fine, and I have more than enough power for my needs. with 8 GBs of ram installed. I thought there would be a USB 3 plug, but that was my confusion when shopping around for mobo's & hardly anybody else's fault but my own. The truth is that I could not be happier with the size of the finished unit and how it functions.

I returned two Gigabyte motherboards purchased from Amazon. Both were DOA and I was quite disappointed. This also happened to be back in 2010 where I purchased again from Amazon two Intel boards which were DOA again. Fortunately, the third one, a Biostar that arrived worked extremely well and finally died from overuse this year.

This is my first ASRock motherboard which booted up and runs great with no problems. In fact, I am typing out this review using this new piece of equipment which is both smooth and fast even with only 4GB of DDR3.

If nothing else, I appreciate the great service that Amazon does in not questioning my judgement in which situations as these make a retailer appear awfully bad and at fault.

To all the folks in the Amazon returns department, thank you all for your incredible effort. My account was credited as soon as the packaged was received. I cannot ask for anything better.

It works great. I install Ubuntu 12.04 server with RAID5 three 3TB NAS drives. I have loaded up a lot of photos there. It can support up to 4 internal SATA drives. The USB supports 2.0 only. It does not have 3.0, but pretty fast uploading the pictures from an external drive to the NAS drives. I don't need a constantly uploading big file sizes. USB2.0 works fine with me. Haven't tried audio nor video outputs, because it is used as a server. Haven't tried to stream movie via the internet connection. Should not be a problem with 1000Mb on board.

Haven't measured the idle power. As mentioned in other sites, the idle power is very low. That is the reason I pick this one as a server. Need to balance the performance and the power consumption. As a server, it runs 24x7. As a rough estimate, each 10W power is about $17.5 per year (my current electric rate is $0.2/kWh). If it runs 30W, it is about $4.5 per month. Not a big deal, but adds up to my bill.

Motherboard Is Indeed A Rock

This motherboard simply did not work. Just beyond the BIOS during hardware probing it locked up and never got to a GUI. The freeze always came at the point it was probing USB hardware. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I replaced it with a Biostar MB that this ASRock was supposed to replace and I had no problems. I simply urge caution when purchasing motherboards/electronics from ASRock. Like many Chinese products, when they work - they work well, but the number of defective items not captured by quality control is too high. Not a lot of quality built in. It had a good price, and much potential (considering the rear panel ports), but when it doesn't work potential doesn't mean very much.

Perfect for HTPC build

This mboard is a fantastic base for a medium spec, high value HTPC build. Combined with 4Gb memory, TV tuner (go for a Black Gold BG3630), Windows 7 64bit, blu-ray drive and case you can have a machine that rivals £600 plus prebuilts from Asrock, Dell etc for a sniff over £400. (Bear in mind if you are using it for Blu-ray, high-def audio (e.g. Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-Master) you will have to feed the HDMI output into your amp- it will not output HD audio via optical/TOSlink. This is limited to standard def Dolby 5.1 etc.)

This is run constantly and is now being used as the primary TV source. It enters and comes up from standby faster than my TV switches on.

It'll do anything short of video editing and 'proper' gaming but is best suited to light home-office use or (as I've used it) a PC for the lounge and (highly functional) PVR and media hub using Windows Media Centre.

I had to return my first motherboard because it arrived non functional. I note that Asrock do have an easy and streamlined way of taking returns, which is a good thing for the buyer. However, once I had fitted the second motherboard and loaded Windows 7 as well as all the drivers, I noted that the desktop clock apply button wasn't functioning and I couldn't set the time. This may not sound a big deal, but for the fact that unless I change the date and time every day, how can I keep regular date and time Word Records ETC, as well as surfing the net. (Search engines treat improper settings as a virus).

I have run numerous virus checks without finding anything however. I tried setting it with Supervisor settings as well as numerous other things including obviously changing the battery. It would be nice if I could contact the seller for advice, but there is not a "Contact" button for this seller and if you try to talk to the American parent org they tell you to go to your local vendor!

My guess is that I have another defective mother-board, but it would be nice to speak to someone to get a second opinion.

OK but noisy
