Top customer reviews
I have also been looking for a wireless headset to use occasionally so I decided to try the Steelseries arctis 7's, and I was disappointed. I had tried them for both PC and PS4, and both had issues where the right earcup was quieter than the left earcup, unless volume on the headset was maxed, using the volume control on the headset. The sound also was not great on either system and I also tried the 7.1 surround on PC and was not impressed.
I have also tried the Steelseries Siberias, the Sony Pulse Elite and Golds, Turtle beaches, and the old Astro a50s on PC and PS4.
The Siberia's were too tight, I disliked the LCD on the mixamp, the mic was good but had some bleed through into the headset (not sidetone), customer support was disappointing as I contacted them with an issue and did not receive a response. I liked the batteries and the overall build quality did make them feel like a premium headset.
The Sony headsets had good audio, simple to setup, but the mic quality was meager.
The previous gen a50s were good, but the headset padding was very stiff compared to the a40 tr. The a50s also had an issue where the headset wireless transmitter would cause a buzzing noise, which was highly irritating, but Astro did replace them for free. The battery life could also be better on the a50s as well.
The turtle beaches broke within a year, but it was an average headset overall.
So after trying all of these headsets on the PS4 and PC, I decided that the a40 tr's were still the best overall headset for myself. I found that every wireless headset had a drawback on one system or the other, excluding the a50s, or they had a a small compromise that I was not willing to settle with.
With any headset, if you can update them via PC or console, do it frequently, as sometimes small issues can be fixed by an update.
*I am willing to try the new Astro A50s as well as the new Sony Platinum headset. If I do decide to try these headsets out I will update this review.
Original review: I use these both for PS4 and PC and they work perfectly. I did have issues with my mic and contacted Astro and they sent me a replacement for free.
1) This headset has the best mic and audio quality for both PC and PS4.
2) The mix amp is great and easy to use.
3) Only three cables for PS4 and two for PC, mic cable included.
5) Stream port- I am currently using these to stream on PS4 using an elgato capture card. With a 3.5 mm cable, I connect it to my PC and change the audio input for the elgato software. It records all audio, including party chat and game volume. You can also tweak the volume in the software if you find that your voice, game volume, or your party volume is to low or high.
1) Expensive, but the build quality is the best I have seen.
2) Software could use improvements. Maybe have profile sharing online for eq presets.
Final thoughts- I have used many headsets and these are the best for both PC and PS4. I have tried the hyper Kingston cloud II's, the Steel Series H, the Sony pulse elite headset, and a pair of Astro a50's. If you want to save money and only plan on buying a headset for PC I recommend the Kingston's. For PS4, the Sony headsets are good for sound quality, but the mic quality is not that great. But if you plan on using them for both PS4 and PC I strongly recommend the a40 tr. They are more comfortable than the a50's and you do not have to worry about a buzzing noise that may occur. I also recommend the mod kit as it works great for reducing noise, but it isn't as comfortable over long periods of time.
Before you use this headset, plug it into a computer via usb, (make sure it is in PC mode) and download the Astro software and update the Mix amp.
*Also if using with PS4 make sure to change your settings. Go into Sound and screen, then audio output settings and change sound to prioritize optical out. Change audio format to Dolby. Then go into devices, then audio devices and change output to headphones to chat audio. Also make sure that both input and output are set to usb (Astro mix amp pro)
Bottom line- this headset was just what I was looking for, usable and great on both PC and PS4. I have reviewed and tried a lot of headsets and this headset is the best and it meet and exceeds my requirements.
Pros: (1.) it has good surround sound quality, well at least for my taste, its good enough to get the job done. (2.) the mix amp is awesome! you can connect it to any device with a 3.5mm jack port( I had to buy a 3.5mm cable because it did not come with it, no big deal) (3.) the headset fits comfortably on my head. its not too tight, not too loose. I wear glasses and it doesn't bother me. The cushions on the headset is decent, it does not bbq my ears or irritate the side and top of my head during long sessions of usage.
Cons: (1.) well, its not actually a con, maybe more of a preference. People say that I sound like C3PO or that my voice sounds like its on auto tune. For me, a mic used to communicate is good enough, as long as they can hear me, its all good. (2.) Its expensive! I bought this when it was on sale. If it had been at regular price, I would've thought twice about buying it. if you have the money, I say go ahead and invest in these. if you don't have the money, you should do more research and shop around for other headsets. (3.) because its so expensive, you have to really protect and take care of this headset. cant let the girlfriend/wife/kids play around with these, if they don't know what they're doing, they might end up breaking it.
overall, I like this headset, it delivers everything I need: surround sound, mic, mix amp, and its comfortable. I'm satisfied. we'll see how long the durability actually holds up. I will update in 6 months if necessary.
The Mix Amp has its own sound card built in, so it's plug and play and you're done. The communication program you will download is very nice and sleek as well. you have some good controls and it is very easy to save it to the Mix Amp to keep your settings in place. The quality of these are very nice, and I feel are the least cheap feeling headsets I have used. The design is the best the Astro company has to offer as well, and there are mods if you so choose to want to change it up.
I thought I had a defective one at first, but I had the microphone cord (from headset to mixamp) backwards. That is my fault, but did not think it mattered. When I turned it around, I was having break ups and thought it was defective. It needed to be pressed in a lot harder, that's all. That was also user error obviously. I see people are having trouble with this, so make sure you have the cord the right way and pushed into the headset well enough. There was a firmware error but resolves after messing with the mix amps cords (unplugging and plugging back in and also the PC version and console version button) so it fixed itself pretty easily. Some minor things like that but was up and running in 15 minutes.
I recommend this headset and as mentioned, other than the few initial issues that I had to figure out myself, once I had it set up correctly, it has been a great headset in both sound and compatibility and also works great with great software. If you have a console and don't want wires, try the A50. If you don't mind a few wires for better quality and control and save some money, buy these! Astro's are the premier gaming headsets and it shows!
