Great PC. Great price.
5 out of 5 stars
Great PC. Great price.
I have been told by many friends that netbooks are bad and that the performance is terrible. I have no clue what they are talking about, ive been spoiled with a nice 2.0ghz dual core, Intel Pentium on my laptop, so this does seem a bit slow, but it is still a great computer for the price. The page does not feature very many specific specs about it such as graphics card and stuff, very annoying. The hard drive is split into two 80gb drives, worth mentioning since the page doesnt. In order to get 10.5 hours battery, it has to be completely uncomfortably dim, no wifi, bluetooth, camera, set not to turn off screen/sleep/hibernate, and with absolutely no motion on the screen. This is near pointless since you wouldnt be using the computer. I would say with moderate usability it gets 8 hours easy. The delivery date estimate was wrong so it ended up spending the night in the mailbox, had to wait for it to thaw, lol. Several months into use, i plugged in my charger. A loud pop and a puff of smoke exited the computer with the distinct, burning electronics smell. Everything seemed to be working fine except the charging port. I turned off the computer and took out the battery, waited about 5 minutes, turned it on, and tested everything. Everything still worked fine except the charging port. I called customer support to obtain an RMA to send it in for repair. She immediately accused the charger of overheating. It had been plugged in only seconds before this and had rested for over an hour. Plus, the smoke came from the computer, not the charger. I explained the situation and she agreed to have me send it in, but said it probably wouldnt be covered by warranty. I have not sent it in, this happened only a couple hours ago. I have tried letting all components rest for a while but have had no luck. I am currently backing up files using the remaining battery life. If you smell close to the vent, you can still smell the burnt electronic system. The point to this addition: customer service is very uneducated and the warranty is useless. They are easy to understand though, unlike most companies who outsource to companies thousands of kilometers away.

I honestly don't know where to start with this review of the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU netbook that I bought. I have read all 152 previous reviews on Amazon.com and a whole bunch of others that I found on computer oriented Internet sites. The four and five star ratings far outnumbered the negative ones, but it was the couple of dozen unenthusiastic reviews that scared the heck out of me. I delayed ordering the computer because of the horror stories of bad batteries, faulty chargers and blue screen crashes.

Eventually, I noticed that most of these critical reviews referred to the battery or to the charging brick and most of those were describing what could have easily been mistakes made by the owners of the machine. They didn't attach the power cord properly or the charging time was too short and some didn't seem to understand how to determine when the battery was fully charged. Some complainers faulted the battery life, but didn't take into account what was running or turned on when using the computer. The battery is drained more quickly when the computer is operating with all rockets running. In other words, when I subtracted the operator associated problems or misconceptions from the difficulty with the Asus hardware there were only a few legitimate complaints about the machine. In reading reviews of other machines it was obvious that they had their share of detractors too. One gripe I can verify is how the Asus Eee PC lid is a fingerprint magnet. It really is.

I researched about all of the netbooks on the market today (Acer, HP, Toshiba, Dell, Samsung and of course the Asus Eee PC line. Having purchased one of the first Eee mini-laptops (the 7 inch 701 with a Linux operating system) when they first came out I have been impressed with the quality and dependability of the Asus product. I suppose that is one reason why I kept gravitating to the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU as I explored the reviews for other brands--in spite of the warnings about unworkable battery chargers and inoperative batteries I bought the Asus Eee PC.

Frankly after exploring the field, I concluded that most of the netbooks for sale today are not all that much different in features, price or even quality. They all have built-in cameras, 10.1 inch screens, Windows XP operating systems, a plethora of USB ports, a card reader, WiFi and most have a few color choices. The main difference is probably the ten hour battery that is unique and ships with the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU. All of the other netbooks had three or six hour batteries on board. I wanted the netbook to use on long airplane flights so the long life battery was a real plus for me. I also liked the idea of being able to restore the computer with an fn-key instead of relying on a CD to come out of hiding in case of big trouble. The Asus Eee PC is sleek and that big battery doesn't stick out on the back edge like the other netbook high capacity batteries do. The `P' model of the Asus Eee PC has Bluetooth built in and a nice cushy zippered sleeve to protect it while traveling.

I have been using my Asus Eee PC 1005HA just as it came out of the box--no memory upgrade, no Windows 7 and no additional software. I find it just about perfect the way it is. You should understand that this is not a full featured laptop squeezed into a smaller and manageable size. The keyboards are 92% the size of those found on a standard computer and the machines run a little hot. Those 10.1 inch screens are a bit cramped if several toolbars have been turned on. The main thing you might miss on the netbooks is a CD/DVD drive. There ain't one. However, an external CD/DVD drive can be purchased for about $65. Anyhow, a netbook is meant to be a small back to basics mini-computer for word processing, e-mail, Web surfing and other fundamental computing, but don't expect to play a lot of high end games or edit photographs on it. Once you see a netbook in your future, the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU is worth a look.

OK, here is my feeling about the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU after two weeks of use: I like it a lot; the battery and charger problems I feared so much have not materialized. I am satisfied with my choice and recommend the machine over all of the others I researched. If something really bad happens to my new Asus Eee PC as I use it longer, I will edit this review and let you know about it. I am still a little worried about that battery thing.

P.S. I used a thin coating of guitar polish/wax buffed onto the lid and the finger print problem was diminished considerably.

    FOLLOW-UP:

I thought it is about time to update my earlier review of the Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook. I may have left you with some question about the battery and charging system--I am sorry about that. I no longer have any qualms about batteries or chargers. After almost two months of using my new Eee PC 1005HA I can report no problem with the battery, bringing the battery to a full charge (realistically about 9 ½ hours) or the charging brick itself. Flawless is a word that comes to mind.

While I am at it, I might as well report complete satisfaction with the Eee PC 1005HA build. It is a well made netbook and everything fits and works. It is sleek and solid. It is a little bit on the heavy side, but I don't have a problem with that. The keyboard is large enough to accommodate touch typing with ease. The machine boots up quickly. It has plenty of memory (1 GB) on board for how I use it--e-mail, web surfing and word processing with the Microsoft WORKS program which is included.

The Windows XP operating system has functioned perfectly. I set up my home network WiFi connection with the netbook easily, quickly and effectively. The Bluetooth feature worked very well too. Some of the Asus special on screen controls, update and expand features built into the machine have not been all that useful and some border on being advertisements for buying Asus stuff. Those things are not obtrusive and can be easily ignored.

I have added the ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive to my little machine, but have not really used it very much. I got it just in case I wanted to add some software to my netbook or perhaps store some data on disks. Frankly, making that rather spendy purchase for "just in case" reasons is probably rather silly, but I did it anyhow.

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA remains a fingerprint magnet in spite of my occasional clean up with guitar polish. I guess having to live with some smudges on the shiny lid is not a big deal.

I still recommend the Asus Eee PC 1005HA after using it for awhile. I am convinced that this netbook is the best one on the market today.

    Update some more:

I just solved the fingerprint problem that exists with the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA shiny surface lid. And at the same time, added a layer of protection for the machine.

I bought and installed an mCover® CLEAR Hard Shell Sleeve Carrying Case for the Asus Eee PC 1005 Series Netbook. I acquired the mCover hard shell from Amazon.com for about $15 as protection for my netbook while traveling. When I got the shell attached (a simple process) I immediately noticed the lid no longer picked up fingerprints. The plastic shell simply does not show prints and the appearance of the netbook is not changed very much. It is just like adding a second skin.

    Update even more:

My face is really red today. The mCover shell I bragged about turned out to be a loser--not a winner. The bottom half of the shell became impossible to install and usless when one of the attachment tabs broke off. I am very sorry about recommending that plastic sleeve. I still have the top part of the mCover on my Eee PC, but the bottom section went in the trash. By the way, my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU Netbook is still the best there is. I continue to like it a lot.

If you want the Cliff Notes version of this review, here it is:
    DON'T BUY IT.
1.This computer is a very nice product for a user who wants to do e-mail, browse the internet, listen to podcasts, download audio books, and run applications like personal finance software and who also wants a small easily portable computer to handles these things.
2.The Asus quality control is dreadful. It took me 3 tries to get a computer that did not have serious problems, and then the power cord failed after 6 weeks.
3.Amazon's customer service is WONDERFUL. When notified by e-mail of my problems, they had replacement computers out to me the next day.

    For more details,

1.My computer use is heavy but simple. I check my e-mail incessantly, download audio books and podcasts, surf the net compulsively, manage my checkbook, and like to move my computer wherever I go, using my home wireless network to stay connected. When my laptop, my main workhorse personal computer, died recently I really wanted to try to minimize my cash outlay. I've been admiring netbooks and decided I would try one to see if I could make it my main computer. If so, great. If not, I will have a few months of time and try to catch a good sale during or after the holidays on a new laptop. Except for difficulties seeing the entire New York Times crossword puzzle all at once on the screen, the Asus satisfies my needs and seems about as fast as my 5-year-old IBM laptop. I am a bit disappointed that the Zoom in & Zoom out feature does not seem to work on as many applications as I had expected, but overall this product delivers what most people expect from a netbook. I have not used the fancier features like the camera or even the Bluetooth yet. Some shortcomings:
1.As others have said, be prepared for the French spellchecker on your Outlook Express. This is not the fault of Asus, but Microsoft has known about the problem since at least 2007 and could have fixed it with a software upgrade without expecting the consumer to download a patch that is difficult to find. For a solution, see [...].
2.You really must have a CD/DVD drive, which must be purchased separately. First, you need it to install certain software, and, second, the System Restore is on a CD!
3.The computer comes with Microsoft Works, but it is on a CD you have no way of reading without buying a CD/DVD drive. A trial version of Microsoft Office is on the computer, but it is a very unsatisfactory student edition and requires purchase after so many uses. My recommendation: download Open Office.
4.Of course, everyone has mentioned that the case gets fingerprints very easily.
5.All my geek friends highly recommended replacing the 1GB RAM with a 2 GB RAM. This WILL, however, require a special screwdriver you do not own but can get from Sears.

    2. My first computer was dead on arrival. Wouldn't boot. Nada. The second put me through a month of a variety of trials and tribulations before I gave up. The problems varied, but there were too many of them for me not to believe there was something fundamental going on. To begin with, I had some problems when I was setting up the computer initially and called tech support at Asus. My computer had been crashing. The helpful tech support person told me to back up to an early system restore point. I had by that time laboriously loaded a lot of my documents, e-mail messages, & settings, and I asked him if these would be affected, because the Restore point was from before I loaded those documents, etc.. He assured me they would not and waited while I did the restore. When the restore finished ALL my messages, etc., were gone! He said this should not have happened. I panicked and asked him if I could now try a newer Restore Point. He said it would not work, but I tried it anyway, and it did. Thank goodness!
After I got up and running I had numerous problems with the computer, almost daily. One day, for example, I was using Open Office to look at a simple document I had created earlier and wanted to edit. The computer completely locked. Control-Alt-Delete would not work. I just had to turn it off using the Off button, and, of course, I lost the edits I had done since the last Save. This happened fairly often. I had thought previously it might be some software I was using when the "lock" occurred, so I did things like upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 and re-install some of my software, but I still had problems. It even happened when the only software running was the Open Office and my Zone Alarm. I also tried turning off my Zone Alarm sometimes when I had problems. The next day's problem was simpler but annoying: Outlook Express kept telling me that there is no connection to the Internet, even though I WAS connected. Selecting "Try Again" works, but it is a REAL NUISANCE!A few days later suddenly I could not connect to my wireless network, and Windows could not manage my connections. Even the tab where you check whether or not you are going to allow Windows to manage your connections was gone! I thought this could have happened when I removed some software (and maybe that WAS the problem in that particular case, although the problems did not occur immediately afterwards as I would have expected if the software removal was the problem), so I decided to do a Restore from before I installed that software. Windows informed me it could not Restore from the Restore point I had selected. I kept trying other Restore Points and finally found one from about 3 weeks earlier that worked. Of course, it was from before I had upgraded Internet Explorer, so IE no longer worked, and I had to reinstall Internet Explorer. I was back in business but my computer could no longer see my wireless printer....I am only giving you a taste of my experiences. I was also nervous about the fact that occasionally the image on the computer screen "shivered", although it normally recovered from that. On other computers my experience has been that this is typically the prelude to a crash of some sort.I kept working with the computer and trying to solve the problems as they occurred, but new ones kept cropping up. I spent more time working on my computer's operations than I did working with my computer. This was not a satisfactory situation, so I wanted to try to rid myself of the problem while it is still within Amazon's Return period. My "techie" friends all seemed to think this indicates some kind of basic problem with the operating system and suggested I scrub it completely and start fresh. I called Asus support, and they agreed it seemed to be some kind of basic problem but most likely a software one. They also wanted me to reinstall Windows completely, which would wipe out all my software, etc.. I would have to go through the trouble of reinstalling Windows & the software Asus supplies and all of my own software. I wouldl essentially start over again as if I had just received the computer, and it is not CERTAIN that I would have solved the problem. If it did not solve the problem, Asus said I would have to send the computer to them for analysis and repair. At this point I decided the better choice would be to try another computer in the hope of getting one without a problem. I am not a geek, but I AM SOPHISTICATED ENOUGH ABOUT COMPUTERS TO KNOW THAT A NEW COMPUTER SHOULD NOT BE GIVNG THIS MUCH TROUBLE! I would have given up if three of my friends did not have Asus computers that they liked a lot. The third computer was apparently trouble-free and was running smoothly with all my old data, applications, etc. in about 3 hours. However, like many others, my power cord failed about 6 weeks later. It was too late to get help from Amazon, andAsus was out of stock, soI had to order a new cord from Hong Kong!
    3. Amazon could not have given better support. The first time a new computer arrived the day after my e-mail. The second time they queried whether it might be better to get a refund and asked for more details to try to make sure other customers did not have similar problems. In this case I called their service phone number and had a very good interaction with their agent...and got my new computer the next day.
If Asus paid a bit more attention to their quality control rather than trying to hype this product's marginal attractions like fancy colors and questionably useful "bells & whistles", they could have a solid winner. Right now I cannot recommend it without reservations.
