In a time where netbooks have been thrown under the bus and replaced by pretty, fancy tablets like the HP Slate and IPad, Asus shows that they have mastered the netbook by releasing a refined version of the already stellar 1015 series.

This is my second netbook and I also own a IPad, Dell v13, Sony vaio, and two quad core desktop computers(I do not keep them all in one place of course) I do like my IPad for entertainment and being a consumer of the Internet, but really missed having a keyboard and mouse for "getting stuff done" and Asus has the highest quality keyboard and mouse of all the netbooks I have tested.

I have replaced the os with Ubuntu 10.10 Unity and it has worked well. The system came with Windows 7 starter which I used once and it seemed proficient, but I do not really use Windows much so I can not really speak on its behalf. It also had a second "quick boot" os that appeared to be a stripped down version of Linux, but I am only guessing here. This did not serve much purpose for me. As far as Ubuntu Unity it is running pretty well, but still needs a little work. I put it on just to mess with and it has been good enough to keep for regular use.

The only things lacking on this device are memory, it comes with one gig of ram and I am guessing most people are going to want to upgrade to 2 gigs. Also, the graphics card is nothing to write home about, but Asus has one more version of the 1015 with a ion graphics card for people interested(I personally was fine with the sub par graphics card and did not have any use for the more expensive graphics card.) I have been able to play flash without any tearing which happened on my old netbook, so maybe the addition of the atom n550 is enough to run flash. I do not use flash often though so maybe I have just been lucky.

    overview
cpu:atom n550 seems fast for an atom, but you can still tell your using an Atom processor.

Ram: ddr3 is nice and fast would have liked 2 gig as the default.

Screen: Resolution seems good enough. The matte finish is good for outdoor use.

Battery: Good, says 13 hours, but I get 10 using Ubuntu Unity

keyboard: A+, like the chiclet keyboards!

mouse: good. Large for a netbook and has a nice silky rubber coating over it.

bluetooth: mine was disabled by defualt. I'm guessing to save battery. I had to hit F2 at boot to enter the BIOS and enable the bluetooth.

    wifi: Driver works on Linux.

Camera: Good enough, but noting special. It has a nice little cover that slides over lens and disables the device to save power when not in use. Works in linux.

    Charger: Nice and small.

Everything works in Linux using Ubuntu 10.10 Unity, for anyone who cares. The only quark is the wifi driver is propriety, so I had to enable it from the restricted drivers, but no other issues.

I really wish I could give this nice little Netbook a glowing report. Boy do I, considering how I got sucked in by all of the rave reviews. (See update below)

For me to love this device it would HAVE to have an easy to use touchpad. Sadly, it has issues. Yes, it's got all kinds of settings and etc, all but the one it really needs.

Here's the story. I got this unit a few days back and started to try to use it. I'm ok with the smaller than full-size keyboard, I can learn to live with the lilliputian shift key on the right, but what I found frustrating like crazy was the constant unwanted "selecting" coming from inadvertent contact with the touchpad. The genius who designed this made the active region of the touchpad (for click purposes) extend to immediately below and adjacent to the space bar. Thus, whenever you hit the spacebar guess what? You've clicked the mouse. Drove me crazy until I hooked up my Bluetooth mouse and turned off the touchpad altogether. Forget about the "palm" setting, it doesn't work. The only setting I could find that solves it (if you're determined to use the touchpad) is to disable ALL clicking on the pad, and instead use the metal button bar below the pad. Kind of a pain, but I *guess* I could learn to adapt if forced to.

So, if you're planning on buying this unit, do yourself a favor and order a "Genius" or other BlueTooth mini-mouse, and then you'll be OK. Other than that be prepared for LOTS of frustration as web pages mysteriously change because someone (you) clicked on a link when you didn't mean to.

    Beware.

2-11-2011 Update, getting better all the time

I am pleased to report that other than the above gripe (still true) I am enjoying this little machine quite a bit. So much so that I've raised it from two to three stars. It's stingy on the batteries (good), the display is bright and clear (really good), and it's so nicely light and portable (wonderful). Here's my suggestion -- UN-ENABLE TAPPING, use an external bluetooth mouse. Do both and life is good. Oh, on another note, can someone tell me why the 250G hard drive is partitioned into 100G, a 15G and a 118G partitions? Makes life a bit more complicated.

2-14-2011 Update, Hotkey Fn(...) problem and fix

Weird problem showed up, hopefully fixed. The "Special Function Keys" would intermittently stop working, a real pain when I wanted to attach an external monitor, change volume or use any of the other great features it provides. ASUS tech support guided me to update the firmware to version 904 (the machine had 801 in it). I also updated the hotkey driver/service files at the same time. I'll post another update if the problem reappears. Downloading the updates involved wending my way through the ASUS support web site, worth doing. There are updates for all sorts of things there.

    2-17-2011 Further Hotkey update

Special Key problem NOT fixed. After all upgrades still having intermittent failure. The symptoms (when failed) is that most of the Fn(...) keys don't work, the only ones that do are the screen brightness and sleep keys. Also, the on-screen status window stops appearing. Waiting for response from ASUS tech support.

2-21-2011 Last post (unless something really interesting happens)

Asus tech support -- that's an oxymoron. The best advice they could give me was to re-image the hard drive and start over. If you've ever started up one of these little critters, you know that it takes a full day, sometimes more, to get it going with all the updates, bloatware removal and etc. There's no way I'm going through that again.

Don't expect much help. Last word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little netbook
Reviewed in Canada on July 27, 2011
I had shopped around for awhile before making this purchase and several reviewers had glowing reports for ASUS netbooks, even over Toshiba and HP. Because I am an author, the keyboard layout and keystroke action were the most important considerations to me. The keys on this are easy to find, well shaped, and very responsive. The battery life, while nowhere near the advertised 11 hours is still great at 7-8 hours, making this netbook ideal for typing away from a power source (on a plane, in a car, etc.)

I also changed out the standard 1 GB RAM to 2, based on the suggestions of other reviewers. I ordered the extra memory at the same time as the netbook. I am no techie, but to replace it was a breeze. (very helpful step-by-step how-to video available on YouTube). This netbook feels a little heavier than I expected, but it's still very portable. Screen is very bright and it boots up quickly. I bought the neoprene sleeve to store it in, and the sleeve is very light in weight but also stretchy enough that I can include the power cord and pens, paper, etc.

One huge annoyance, however, that I did not think about before purchasing a netbook, is that I cannot turn the finger pad off (I use a wireless mouse with it) and this, for typing, is maddening, as an accidental touch of my wrist/finger on it will send the curser sailing all over the page, inserting words where I don't want them to be! If anyone knows the secret to disabling the fingerpad feature, please post it.

All in all, I am very happy with this netbook.

    Have mothballed it.

While I'm still putting the 1015PEM through its paces I think it's a great little machine. I did upgrade to 2 GB RAM as soon as I got it so that helps. My big issue is that it doesn't boot up about 3 times out of 5 and when it eventually does goes through a safe mode start up. Takes a few minutes and is very annoying. This one may be going back by return mail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2010
This netbook I bought was actually for a gift for my girlfriend, but I was too curious had to take it for a run and I was surprised by the crispness of the audio and the graphics was pretty nice considering the fact that its such a little machine. Of course it's still not in the league of Asus' top performance 13-15 inch laptops, however for it's mobile purposes and it's level of evolution towards such a small machine I was overwhelmingly surprised. The DDR3 and the dual processor makes a big difference and the Matte screen makes it less burden on the eyes for extensive users, some people complain about the machine having a big keyboard but I think it's a perfect size considering the fact that a netbook is still a notebook and not a blackberry. Unfortunately this review is from a 12 hour use of the machine and not a long term use, but the more you use it the more you'll love it.

Good, small netbook with longer battery life. Have upgraded to Windows 10 but had a driver problem but apparently now there is a fix on the ASUS website for it.
