Top customer reviews
The C200's build quality is superior to other chromebooks in its class, it does not feel anywhere near as cheap when compared to the Acer C720. The chassis feels solid with very little flex, but make no mistake it still feels like a $300 laptop. The black and silver color scheme looks nice, the metallic silver looks good, but the matte black picks up fingerprints/grease and will look like a mess in no time. The keyboard and track pad are best in class, both are spacious and full size. The keys provide good feedback, while the track pad has a smooth easy to use surface with good faux button feedback. The speakers are a step up when compared to the C720, they have a surprisingly decent range and can be clear & loud, BUT they are mounted on the bottom facing down. Unless you have it sitting on a flat hard surface it will sound muffled especially if sitting on your lap. The screen is the typical 1366 x 768 res you will find in pretty much every other Chromebook. It is bright and clear, with good color for a TN panel, BUT vertical viewing angles are bad and it is GLOSSY which means annoying reflections.
The Baytrail is just OKAY. There have been times I only had a few tabs open and performance will obviously slow when you have a busy/complex site open and if you try to play 1080P Youtube vids, you will get stuttering/dropped frames. The Baytrail's poor performance is especially evident using Google Maps i.e. scrolling across the map or zooming in/out is not smooth at all. It just doesn't hold up as well as the current gen Haswell Celerons. BUT you are getting a benefit from that, the battery life is about the best you will find among Chromebooks AND it is completely fan less, you don't have to worry about annoying fan noise or overheating from blocking a vent. Even when pushed it barely gets warm.
Overall the biggest weakness here is the Baytrail. I really hope it is just an HTML5 optimization issue, because the lacking performance is quite obvious.
Pros... Solid build quality for the price range, a great keyboard and one of the best track pads on a chromebook. Incredible battery life and it's fanless.
Cons... Poor performance on complex HTML5 sites/Youtube vids. Only 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage that can't be upgraded. The black lid is a fingerprint/grease magnet which will make people think you just ate fried chicken. Glossy screen with poor viewing angles.
I wish I could recommend this as a must buy, but there are better options out there. If you absolutely must have a fanless/silent Chromebook with the best battery life, this is the one to buy. If you want the best bang for the buck the Acer C720 is still the best bet. If you want the best overall package: design/performance/battery life the Dell Chromebook is king.
A Chromebook is basically a tablet in a laptop's body, meaning you've got a true, functioning laptop with the storage limitations of a tablet or smart phone. You can surf the web, check emails, create word documents, and even stream movies on streaming sites (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) The biggest difference between a Chromebook and a full-on laptop, as stated, is the storage size. While you can do all the things listed above, you won't be able to have a mountain of music, photos, movies, etc. stored on your Chromebook, unless you keep it under the listed GB (16 GB in this instance). After reading reviews on Amazon, around the web, and talking to my brother, who is fairly tech-savvy, that was the best, SIMPLEST explanation I was given as to what exactly a Chromebook is.
As for the product itself, it's absolutely great. Once I fully understood what a Chromebook was, I purchased this Asus and have been very pleased. I had read how simple it was to initially get "up and running", and was still shocked when all I had to do was take it out of the box, turn it on, connect to my wireless connection, and sign-in to my Gmail. Yes, that simple. I had read up on another Chromebook (by Samsung) and it seemed like you really had to jump through hoops to get it going. The Asus literally took 3-4 minutes and I was checking my email and favorite sites without a hitch. Very impressed.
The look and feel are tremendous. Most laptops I have used in the past have been anywhere between 13"-15" and rather weighty. This Asus Chromebook is slightly larger than a First Generation iPad, and about the same thickness and weight. It's got a full functioning keyboard and a nice sized touchpad. One drawback that I've seen discussed on previous reviews is the outside being a "finger print magnet". This, unfortunately, I can attest to. So far, this is the only inkling of a con I can find with this Chromebook. This doesn't bother me a lot, but I can see myself wiping off fingerprints once or twice a week out of personal preference. This may not be that big of a deal to others. Certainly not a deal breaker to me. There is also a very good selection of carry bags, sleeves, and skins that fit this model.
The performance is equally tremendous. I've heard through reviews that people have had it drop internet connection and say the signal is out of range, but I have not encountered this. I have a good internet connection and provider, and the Chromebook is just as fast as any Desktop or laptop I've had. The touchpad is very responsive and the keyboard feels extremely sturdy. It comes with a fairly cheap price, but it certainly isn't cheaply made. The Asus boasted one of the best battery lives out there, and it's been great. When the power cord (included) is plugged in, it tells you the percentage it is charged and how long it will take to reach 100%. When unplugged, it tells you the percentage and how long the battery has before reaching 0%. When mine was at 100%, it said it would remained charged for 13 hours, but most reports I've read is closer to 11, even with heavy, non-stop usage. This is what sold it for me, as I can take it with me away from home for a few hours or even to work and not have to worry about toting the charger with me every where I go. Very convenient and, again, very impressed.
I wanted to keep this review short and simple, but there are just too many cool aspects to touch on with this Chromebook. My biggest initial fears with purchasing a Chromebook were the performance and reliability. While $200 isn't particularly wallet-breaking, I didn't want to spend that kind of money on something I'd either return or never use because I didn't like it. After about 20 minutes of usage, my fears were quickly put away. If you're like me and need someone to really spell out the technical details of what a Chromebook is, hopefully this has helped. And do more research if unsure, knowledge is definitely power. If you know what you're getting in a Chromebook (a laptop with lower storage limitations, or a "tablet in a laptop's body" as I like to think of it), then you really can't go wrong with this one.
