I was eyeing this laptop for several weeks now. I was hoping to get a good Black Friday or holiday deal on this item but that time never came so I bit the bullet and got it for $199 (which is reasonable).
At first glance, this is quite a small laptop. I’ve used 11.6” laptops before but with the thinness and weight, I was somewhat surprised by the size and worried that the keyboard would be hard to type on. It did take about two hours of consistent typing for me to get used to this thing. I type a lot of research papers and this is one of the more responsive keyboard laptops I’ve used. Of course, not macbook quality but definitely better than the other budget laptops on the market. Compared to my 13.3” ASUS chromebook, the keys on this model are more cramped together and smaller in size. However, it is surprisingly nicer to type on and isn’t mushy like the former.
As far as battery life goes, I started at 100% estimated usage time of 12hrs. I did a full update, streamed 30mins of video, played 2hrs of pandora, downloaded a bunch of apps and installed google chrome. After all of that, and approximately 3hours later, I still have 62% battery left. I imagine that it will live up to the advertised battery life with normal use. At most, the laptop has gotten slightly warm, not enough to bother anyone should you choose to to use it on your lap though.
Memory and performance. OK, this is largely the reason why I was wary of purchasing this laptop. It comes with minimal storage. After all the updates, I was left with 16gb of SSD. I did purchase a 64gb micro sd card for this laptop and all it took was changing storage preferences to get everything directed to the SD card. I did experience some trouble at first as the storage settings did not save for some reason and I had to redirect everything to the micro SD twice. It appears to be working properly now though and apps download relatively fast on this thing. I currently have 16 tabs open on Google Chrome (yes, I am that person) and everything is still running smoothly. The only lag that I’ve experienced was using the Edge on this machine. Do NOT use edge! Just download google chrome and save yourself the trouble.
Display and Build quality: Again, this is a very thin and lightweight laptop made out of entirely plastic, so it feels somewhat cheap. But I think the design and aesthetics may make up for that. At a glance, it looks like it’s made out of aluminum. I won’t go into what color it is, as it varies depending on the lighting. But it appears to be a more expensive product than it really is. The screen itself is actually pretty nice for the price. It’s not going to stream HD videos well but it’s definitely not an eyesore either. Another thing I should point out is that the black bezel on the screen is indeed plastic. (For some reason I thought it was going to be glass.) As far as ports go, all of them are in working order. I did have trouble with the USB 2.0 port as it was rather snug which made inputting and removing USBs rather difficult and with excessive force, unfortunately. I’m not sure if this will be a long term issue or if it will fail on me in the long run but I’m optimistic.
Overall, this is a nice inexpensive laptop that will exceed expectations for anyone simply needing a laptop for essay-typing, web-browsing, and light weight tasks. It is extremely portable and is a great option for people looking to travel with a laptop. For the price and performance, it's worth it.
Pros (for me) :
- good battery life
- good speakers
- good travel size
- good for watching movies and web browsing
- Windows 10 64 bit , 4 GB RAM, microSD port, fast A/C WiFi
- casting videos to smart TV
Cons: (based on my opinion)
- Hard drive is small - usable space is around 14 GB, 64GB would be perfect; but, this one is not a biggest issue for me - 128GB micro-SD card or USB are cheap.
- USB ports only 2 - additional USB 3.0 port would be awesome.
Bottom line :
For $199 it is a pretty good laptop for basic computing i.e watching videos, playing music, web browsing, and basic office/college tasks. Not sure about gaming.
It has no problems streaming YouTube or Netflix in HD. I'm able to have a bunch of tabs open in Chrome with no noticeable slowdown. I've even used it to edit 24-megapixel photos in GIMP while traveling. It's around 4-5 times slower than my screaming fast i7 desktop computer when performing CPU-intensive photo manipulation functions, but again, this laptop is $200. It's also able to run emulators up to the PlayStation 1 era with no issues.
It's plastic painted to look like metal (I guess that's just the style these days) but it feels well built -- less squishy than my previous cheap laptop. Looks more silver than gold in my opinion, and that's a good thing. It looks professional. I wouldn't feel self-conscious taking notes on this thing at a conference, unlike other whimsically colored laptops at this price point marketed towards college students. Some people may be able to rock the vivid purple laptop look, but I am sadly not one of them. The chiclet style keyboard is great too.
I'm saving the best for last: it has 10+ hours of battery life even with moderate-to-heavy use. It has lasted entire flights across the country on half a charge. I've never owned a laptop that could do that before.
Top international reviews
The battery life is around 12 hours, so that's great for me and I have no complaint about the speed of the computer, it's fast enough for me. The only thing I don't like is sometimes, when I scroll down on a webpage, the screen will briefly flicker but if I stop scrowling, everything is good again so I don't really care.
So I bought this computer for one purpose and it totally fullfield it, and it's cheaper than a tablet that can run the office suite so I love my tiny asus laptop!
It's a rather nice budget laptop. I prefer this one to the HP Stream 11 (probably because it doesn't have that tacky candy colour)
The finish of this Asus is smooth. Made of plastic that turns into more of a rose gold colour than gold. Easily scuffable if you ask my opinion.
I've recently gotten this laptop as an alternative because carrying around my brother's Asus 15'6 inch was getting annoying (too heavy).
It's a fast machine even though the quad-core is low. I'm even surprised it runs as quickly as this. I was expecting a sluggish machine that was barely able to run Google. It's a lightweight laptop! It fits easy in the hand and doesn't take much space. After 2 hours of browsing, the bottom is hardly hot if at all.
Now keep in mind, you only get 32 GB of storage. I've installed Microsoft Office (which comes with the device for a limited time) and little computer maintenance programs such as avast and ccleaner. At the end, I at 12.5 GB left. I would recommend using a MicroSD and leave it into the slot in the computer to make it permanent. USB keys and external hard drive are handy as well. If you're able to use One Note and the Cloud, do it as well. Ads really slow down the laptop (and even make it unresponsive for a few seconds). I use an ad blocker to limit the strain on the intel and it looks decent now.
The keyboard is nice and fits the palm. I type quickly but I have an odd way to type so I cannot really comment for everyone. The keys look a bit cheap but hey, it's a budget laptop. The screen panel is glossy and very reflective. You can adjust the brightness and move the panel to a certain extend. It's not that terrible. Now keep in mind, the colour accuracy is poor but that's expected coming from a budget laptop. The battery is not removable. If you wish to change it, you need to unscrew the panel to do so (from the bottom). The trackpad is a bit stiff but the area is bit and responsive. I have yet to use Skype on it and try the webcam but it can't be worse than the 480p quality of a Macbook.
It's a good budget laptop if you want to do light schoolwork or browsing the web, watching Netflix, typing essays, finding recipes ...
As long as it suits your basic needs, all is good. I currently have Chrome and Firefox on my device. Firefox gets a bit sluggish at times. I need to figure out why.
(I've tried the Microsoft Minecraft on this and I get a 20 to 15 fps and even lower in crowded area). I would avoid playing games on this.
After using it a few times, I have decided to return it as it is not enough for what I need to do! It's disappointing.
I'm very happy with the Asus. I wanted something small and portable but with a full keyboard. This is exactly that. It runs smoothly and efficiently, and I love having a laptop again. The colour isn't as yellow as one would think(thank god). It's like gold had an affair with silver, got pregnant, and the Aurora Gold is what popped out(I love it because it means I can get whatever colour mouse I want!-without being tacky). If you've never had a notebook style laptop before, you have to get used to having the fn button which lets you use the sound, brightness, screen projection, etc. Which is easy to learn.
I've read complaints that the sound is tinny but I've found that it just doesn't get loud enough to hear above a washing machine. But I have a bluetooth speaker which fixes that. The 32GB isn't much if you want to download a lot of games but that really slows down the computer. I recommend getting a flash drive or something if you're running out of space.
All in all, I'm very happy to have a laptop again at such an affordable price.
The only flaw is the storage (32 Go only), but you can always fix it with a memory card.
This little laptop isn't the fastest but for its price, it by far surpasses many if not all other laptops in it's price range! My father loves it and as a man who never asks for anything, he loves it. The only issue I had with this laptop is when I tried to set it all up and the windows install/update messed up something and it took me over a few hours trying to figure what was wrong but I did fix it. **Although this had nothing to do with the computer itself!** The only issue I have is that the touchpad is very small and it's easy to lose track of the pad itself. I fixed the issue by purchasing a mouse and pad. Other than that I like the laptop and so does my dad!
However, over the couple months I have noticed that sometimes when I open my laptop up it won't turn on. I hold the power button down and nothing happens. It's at the worst timing too (when I'm about to start lecture) so it can be very frustrating. If you have this issue too, my solution is to hold the power button while the screen is black (nothing will happen) then close my laptop for about a minute. After a minute (sometimes takes a couple) I open my screen back up and the lock screen pops and everything works as normal. It's very weird and idk why it does this, but it's only temporary (at least for me). I take extremely good care of my laptop and have done nothing to harm it (i.e. Drop it), but this is always an annoyance and I simply can't send it away for a week or two as I need to use my laptop everyday for class. Im just nervous one day it won't turn back on.
Overall, this laptop is amazing, especially for the price, but you may encounter this problem. I read some reviews previous to buying it and saw this as an issue, but not by many people so I'm writing this as a precautionary to anyone thinking about getting it!! Many reviews are done within the week or two of buying the product and my issue didn't start until after a month of owning it, so please be aware.
Update - Its almost one year later, and the memory is almost filled to capacity with the operating system. The computer is buggy, and glitches out randomly, shutting down while you're working so you have to stay on top of save functions. Extremely slow, can't handle more than three simple programs running - abrobat reader, word and firefox!
Seriously - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!
