|Product Alert: IPS (In-Plane-Switching) is a technology for LCD displays that offers users wider viewing angles and bolder colors by allowing more light to pass through the panel. As a result, IPS panels can exhibit a slight glow around the edges and corners (also known as light bleed), which is entirely normal.

Only complaint I have is that the price point for this monitor is a little high. I bought this monitor and pulled it out of the box, put on my desk and it was massive and i loved it. However a couple weeks later I bought the same version monitor but only in the 27 inch and i got to say the $140 cheaper 27 inch monitor looks bigger. but that is because of the aspect ratio is 16:9 and is only 1920x1080. the 29 inch is at least an 1.5 inches shorter but the width is obviously a lot longer. If I had seen these monitors side by side, I probably would have bought the 27 inch monitor.
The price is honestly the only thing that caused me to not give it a full 5 stars. I would easily buy this monitor and have 2 of them if it got closer to $300 ($350 is the highest I would pay to get a second monitor)
-speakers surprisingly good (only good - doesn't beat a simple $50 2.1 setup)
-Pre-set colors, ie - game mode, theater mode, scenery mode all really great
-size compared to 27 inch looks almost smaller
-menu/navigation buttons are REALLY sensitive.
The real reason I returned it was a low speed oscillation in the monitor brightness--drove me nuts. Have not found any other reviews with that problem so it may be a rare issue. Probably due to a bad voltage control loop.
I waited until the last day I could return it to make sure this was not a "burn in" issue--it wasn't.
I have this hooked up to my Samsung Series 7 laptop with an hdmi port. This laptop has switchable graphics with
Intel and Radon display adapters. However, the max hdmi output is only 1920x1080 because it used the Intel adapter for this port.
So, I used the StarTech DisplayPort External-Adapter to solve this. It allows for high resolutions USB3 (and USB3 only)
With this I am able to output this at the full 2560x1440 resolution and looks perfect.
(Due to the switchable graphics, I had to use the Intel display controller for the StarTech adapter software. The radeon controller would not work correctly with this. It created a screen-studder/refresh issue.)
(for the StarTech adapter, I also needed a DisplayPort cable, which I found here: http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Gold-Plated-DisplayPort/dp/B00C7RP2QQ/ (this one has simple push button snap-in connectors and also passes through the audio of my laptop)
great little device, though. Very small formfactor.
I was planning to buy two 23 inch monitors when I stumbled on ultra wide monitors. Performance are more then adequate to play fast pace games like Dirt 3, Grid 2. At 2560 x 1080 you can work with two application side by side very comfortably.
This monitor does not feature spdif audio optical input and using the regular audio line-in jack can result in very squeaky sounds.
If you can use HDMI and you have a recent video card, your PC will stream digit audio and the monitor speakers will produce very good sound quality. Make sure to run the latest video card driver.
I did contact ASUS support and they did answer me within 24 hours, but I had already tried all of their solutions.
PS the monitor does work fine using the DVI cable on another computer, but that really doesn't help. If this monitor will not boot with HDMI only workstations, then I simply will not be able to use it.
Lost a big sale there, ASUS.
Having the extra width is nice, though I wish I had more vertical real estate, but that's a different class of displays even though they share the 21:9 aspect ratio.
My only true complaint is that I wish the stand was a bit sturdier. But since it hasn't caused me any notable problems, I'm keeping my 5 star rating.
