As soon as I got this laptop, I erased Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu Linux, so let me tell you all about the hardware.
This laptop has 4 slots for memory. This is something most other laptops lack. This may not seem like much, but in 2 years, when all the other laptops will be stuck at 8GB memory, this one will still be able to double up to 16GB. If you purchase this laptop NEW, then you may only receive 6GB preinstalled. (check your supplier) memory rating A++
The resolution on this screen is 1366x768 which is good for me. I am not a fan of gigantic screen resolutions, because I don't like squinting my eyes to see the tiny words on the screen. The angle you view this screen can diminish how well you see it. screen rating B+
The Nvidia Graphics Card has power- I'm not a huge gamer, but for average gaming, this system has pretty massive power. It can run Second Life v3.3 at nearly full graphics while keeping a good fps. graphics rating A
The CPU is a i7 2670QM quad core with virtual threading, which means 4 physical cores and 4 virtual cores. I really can't give this one a thumbs up or down. There are times when I expected it to be a bit faster, but I think this situation will improve as programs become more multi-threaded. processor rating C+
I've seen some people remark negatively about the keyboard on this system. The keyboard on this is mediocre, but it suits me well enough. If you prefer a chiclet style keyboard, you can buy a chiclet replacement keyboard many places. Just search "asus n53 keyboard". keyboard rating C
Like every manufacturer, they claim the battery lasts 3-4 hours or something. In reality they all lie. With light use, the The 6cell battery lasts about 2hours. If you want to get 3 hours, you can upgrade and buy a 9cell battery. battery rating B
The audio system on this is touted a lot. I'm not an audio expert, but it sounds really good, even when I turn the audio Really loud. sound rating A
The harddrive is 750G and 7200 RPM. That's more than enough space for the average user, and 7200RPM is a fast speed for standard drives. harddrive rating A
The webcam seems like an average 2.0 megapixel webcam. If you are paranoid, it has a physical cover switch to close it. That will prevent it from viewing anything. webcam rating B
The temperature stays very cool on this system. I usually have it resting on a cloth surface (very bad for laptops), it only blows a tiny bit of warm air out of the left side. Though if I play a 3D game, it will really warm up then, and start throwing out a good amount of heat. During average use like websurfing, the laptop is so quiet you can barely even hear it. temperature rating A+
The A/C adapter for this unit can get pretty warm, so be sure not to cover it up. adapter rating D
If you hate laptops with the powercord on the side, you will love this one. It has the powercord out of the back. I got a right-angle connector (about $10) for my powercord, so that the cord goes across the length of the back instead of sticking straight out.
I have not tested the bluetooth capabilities.
Ubuntu Linux Compatibility:
The only real issue that I have found with this laptop on Linux is running the Nvidia GT 630M Optimus graphics card. Nvidia has stated that they currently are not officially supporting this card on Linux. To get it working, you have to install drivers from The Bumblebee Project, and run a program as '$ optirun program-name' to run it using the nvidia card. Otherwise it runs everything on the Intel graphics card.
On Linux, most everything else runs on the system without a hitch. If you have any troubles with wifi encryption or switching on/off the wifi, search google for "How to fix wireless problems in Ubuntu"
I recommend it :)
