Must be a windows fix as I have not updated the Asus driver since install.
I hope it continues.
Original Review: I'd like to give this a higher rating. Because when it works, it works well. It can definitely deliver the speeds you want.
Unfortunately, the 5GHz portion of this product isn't so good. And that's the radio i'm sure most people want to use. But read on first..
My system has an incredibly frustrating compatibility issue, where if i have dual monitors setup, it WILL NOT connect to 5Ghz. It can see it, and tries to connect but "Cannot connect to this network". If i disconnect the secondary screen, it will connect immediately and deliver the speed. I can then re-connect the secondary screen, and 75% of the time it will continue to work. The other 25% it will not deliver internet. And occasionally lock up the networking options.
After HOURS of research, it appears that this is a compatibility issue with Windows 10 and the ASUS drivers. No matter how many driver re-installs and updates i try, it does not fix this issue. ASUS customer support are next to useless. The advise removing the product, removing the drivers, re-fitting the product and re-installing drivers.
I wish i had returned this within the return period. But i was determined to figure it out. 3 months later and theres still no fix.
System specs are:
Maximus VIII Hero
SLI EVGA 980ti
Ripjaws V 16gb memory.
I have tried HDMI cables, DVI-HDMI cables., different display outputs. Same problem everywhere.
If ANYONE can shed some light on this, i would greatly appreciate a reply! But by looking back at many reviews, i am not the only one that has issues.
Unfortunately i cannot try removing a GPU as it is a full custom watercooled setup. Sandwiching the wifi card in there is tricky enough.
Over the past year, I've found that ATT fiber sometimes throttles, or possibly as more neighbors in my cul-de-sac buys ATT fiber, my speeds are auto-throttled, but my speeds have slowed to 500/500s again usually, though at times it still climbs to 750/700+ speeds.
My advice: don't get obsessed over the speeds and enjoy your gigafiber internet. So long as you have a decent wifi adapter, like the ASUS USB-AC68, and decent wifi router, like the ASUS AC3100, your speeds will be fine at around 500/500. Unless your some high-production video streaming company, or some high-income professional gamer, I can't imagine that you need it much faster than 500/500. That's the most you can reliably count on over the years with GigaFiber connections. If you need faster speeds, go with directly wired LAN connections to your computers (hire an electrician, or DIY as a weekend project).
I'm including a snapshot of my current speedtest using an ASUS ac5300 router with one of these PCIe AC88 wifi cards, but also a snap of the fastest speeds I've ever gotten with this card as well, to give you some idea of what to expect.

I don't have a disk drive in my PC and I had no problems installing it, all you need is an ethernet connection to get the drivers after you plug it in.
I absolutely love the AC88 cards. I have been able to get signals from -43 to -50 with my data transfer speeds at over 100Mbps and no drops; I am able to connect at 450Mbps with two channels. **On the first computer with the AC88, I have attached two 14dbi Flat Panel directional antennas, one extended mount w/stock antenna and one stock antenna in its original (4-port) mount. On the second computer I have one 14dbi Flat Panel and three Asus antennas in their original mount.
The wifi on the first computer (HD video feed) does perform better on data transfer, but even with the lower antenna gain on the second computer I am still able to get solid speeds.
CON: Windows didn't recognize it. came with a CD for driver... I haven't had a CD drive in ages..
FINAL: Do I recommend ? Hard Yes, If you have the cash for an expensive card. Do it. you get what you pay for in the computer world. (if you know what you're buying) There are some Chinese knock offs for less money. But...
I have gigabit internet, and since I use it as a media server (not just local stream, I share my media with friends who stream off me), plus the need for fastest speed for torrenting, this was the best option.
On average my cat5e connection would download between 900-1000Mbps, with this card I'm around 850-980Mbps. With local speeds in excess of 1000.
Overall very satisfied with it.
