There are many articles on the web on how to enable this manually for various devices (lots of articles for Galaxy S7). I'm going to list the high level steps that worked for me specifically on this tablet. If you're not sure about any of these steps, you can easily google for more details or leave a comment and I will try to answer them but perhaps not promptly.
0. Back up your microSD data.
1. Enable the "Developer Option" on your Z380M
2. Enable "USB Diagnostic" in the Developer Option and connect Z380M to a PC via USB
3. Download and install Android ADB tool to your PC (see 3rd comment from the top in this thread from sidewinder on where to get this tool)
4. From command prompt of your PC, enter the following two commands (without the quotation mark):
"sm set-force-adoptable true"
5. Go into Z380M's Settings-Storage and USB, select the SD card. The menu option (in the upper right corner) should now give you a choice to "format as internal storage"
6. You might get an error message when formatting is complete. Just reboot your Z380M and ignore the error message.
7. After reboot, go back to the same menu option in step #5. This time, select "Migrate Data" instead of formatting.
You now should have a combined internal storage of 16GB + your microSD.
8. FYI, for certain apps you will see "sorry, unfortunately this app has stopped working" error if you open it right after downloading the app. I have found this error does go away completely after restarting the tablet. It's a minor annoyance, but not a deal breaker for me.
In the end I select this one for its specs, reviews (both professional and user), and my positive experience with Asus products in the past, and so far have been very pleased.
I'll get my only complaint out of the way first:
1) I wish manufacturers would leave Android stock and not layer their own customized user interface on top of it. That said, Asus does several useful things with their UI. Still, I prefer such options to be offered not pushed. Fortunately, it is easy to download Nova Launcher and set it up to operate like standard Android if you want, so this is in no way a deal-breaker.
That said, in all other respects this is a great small tablet. I find the hardware quite up to any task I've tossed at it, the battery life is solid, and the screen is bright and clear. It is easy to hold in one hand, or to use with two hands when I want. And while this is a mid-range tablet, it at least looks closer to high-end than I would have expected. If you're looking for a tablet that can handle everyday "real world" usage, this one does so well.
It has only a single speaker (front facing, at least), so sound is as tinny as you would expect. Headphones are the best fix for that (bluetooth or via headphone jack are both supported). Yes, you can pop in a microSD card, but it cannot be used for app storage, only media storage (an Asus UI limitation, no idea why). I'll also mention the power/volume button placement: they are on the right side of the device (when held in portrait orientation), right at the midpoint of the side, and the volume rocker sits above the power button (the opposite of most phones and other tablets I've seen). In portrait mode they tend to get in the way, leading to accidental clicks. Asus would do well to borrow the button placement from the Kindle Fire 7 (all on the top, in portrait mode), IMO. But the buttons are less in the way when holding the device in landscape mode.
Update: Asus just (early April 2017) pushed out an over the air update to Android version 7.0 (Nougat), which shows Asus is still supporting upgrades to this tablet. That is another reason to consider this tablet.
Five stars earned for being a solid tablet with good performance and a great form factor.
My complaints are very minor and not worth knocking off any stars for and serve to no real detriment, they are just my preferences. The Micro USB charging port is at the top of the tablet instead of the bottom. While you can flip it over and rotate the screen to solve this problem, it makes using the volume and power button a little awkward. Additionally, the Micro SD card slot is somewhat annoying to get to, requiring removing the entire backplate, though this does make it more secure. There is also a small bit of bloatware and free trials, though they are easy to turn off or uninstall.
Overall I really like this tablet for the price. If you're looking for an entry level tablet that performs well, or perhaps upgrading from a tablet that is several years old and is now underperforming, this one has proven to be fantastic so far.
Top international reviews
It's reasonably fast, the wi-fi is good, and video resolution is clear and free of issues. I haven't noticed any technical problems.
Neither sound nor camera are especially impressive, but both are adequate for casual use.
The documentation available, including the online manual, for the Zenpad I found inadequate for telling me much more than the basics of how to turn it on and recharge it, but this seems par for the course for many items of modern electronics.
The only problem encountered was that while fumbling to turn on the device in the dark, I twice managed to accidentally hit a sequence (accidentally pressing the volume control a couple of times then the power button) where the device reverted to its core Chinese-language programming, and some messing about was needed to restore its original function.. ASUS online help, however, proved helpful in fixing this, so points to them!
On the other hand, recharging and battery life I have found to very good compared to the other tablet I used - it has often lasted for 7+ hours.
I have mostly used it as a portable PDF reader, epub book reader, and web browser, with some limited video and audio play. It has performed well in these roles.
Build quality is acceptable. It doesn't creak when handled, and the back cover isn't too easily removed, but most of the seams are visible to some degree. Materials don't feel overly cheap, back is textured to make it grippy and overall unit has a nice weight.
The battery saving app seems to do a decent job of shutting down battery hog apps that aren't currently in the foreground. It frequently updates to indicate that some app has been "managed."
The kids management app I found too restrictive. The list did not allow me to select all the books and apps I have for my two kids (2 & 5). I've installed Kids Zone by Out of the Park Apps which has all the sandboxing elements I need including booting into the kids mode, restricting access to settings or messaging apps, browser/online access (e.g. can't open browser or Play Store to buy another game linked within a game). Also see MX Player Pro and the Kids Lock plugin for playing videos. I don't feel the need to root the device to lock the tablet down anymore than these apps allow.
Overall ZenUI is fine. It's not garish, and is a means to an end. Customization is li. I'll probably replace the Home app with Nova Launcher at some point. I wish that apps that use a white Material Design base would allow for a dark/night mode. The notifications pane and settings screens are blinding at night. I guess how often do I need to go into settings?
At the MSRP this is a good value tablet with the right compromises. At 25% off as it was on Black Friday 2016, the value of this tablet can't be beat.
For kids the Bobj ZenPad Z380 case is a great fit for this tablet. It bulks up the tablet quite a bit but gives a secure place for little hands to hang onto while also increasing bumper protection, because you know it's going to get dropped.
Update! After using this tablet for several weeks for almost everything, I like it more and more. Mostly used for browsing and streaming, it is quite fast with very few short lags. I really like the Zen UI as it incorporates several utilities that I added from 3rd parties on other devices and which do NOT cause noticeable performance problems.
Great value for most users.
Less bloatware than expected and I will decide slowly on what to keep.
Downloaded my key apps (Netflix, YouTube, Avast A/V, a few streaming news services so far. No issues.
Will need to invest in a micro sd card but I expected that.
I will update if further exploration changes my view...but a very good start.
Went to Staples and they showed me how to install the cover... now is perfectly installed with the memory card in it.
I have to apologize for my previous comment and now I must give 5 stars.. beautiful device well done and extremely hi definition. Recommend this tablet for people who like a good HI definition tablet.
Okay machine overall with some pesky bugs that can be tolerated EXCEPT FOR THE MTKLOG ISSUE PLEASE FIX.
Given the price point ( I got it on sale at $60 off the $200 suggested price) this is an excellent choice for casual use and the size and weight is easy to carry along on daily activities or especially when traveling.
Very satisfied so far.
An amazing tablet for the price. Super snappy, lots of features. Perfect for everyday use i.e. browsing, social media, music, games.
Only potential downfall is the lower screen resolution. Not a game breaker but if you're looking for higher resolution then consider the Zenpad S.
Overall I love this tablet! It's great!
