Good performance; includes software that lightly overclocks the GPU out of the box, and the CPU usually runs cool enough to sustain turbo
OK temperatures (so far hasn't broken 80 under load for me, though I run it on Silent)
Runs quiet if set to Silent mode, with negligible performance change
Surface doesn't noticeably warm up under load
Mostly nice keyboard; has useful hotkeys for changing performance profiles and calling up the tweaking software
Accurate touchpad with easy-to-press buttons
Good speaker quality and placement
Relatively thin and light for a gaming laptop while still cooling well
Included software is useful and unobtrusive. No McAfee! Just the stock Windows 10 bloat that can be easily removed.
VERY easy to open for maintenance (but beware of two ribbon cables on the bottom panel for the light bar)
M.2 SSD is fast (if not as fast as some - 1543 MB/s / 976 MB/s sequential r/w)
RGB is fun to show off, and is customizable via AURA Creator - you CAN set the light bar to a different pattern than the keyboard, it even has a few segments so you can have colors move around the edge.
The bump on the W key is really annoying (might file that down)
Arrow keys are kinda tiny
Touchpad and its buttons could be a bit bigger (c'mon, Asus, the G750 line was great here)
No SD card slots (those slots on the sides are subwoofers)
60 Hz screen when most competitors have 144Hz, and it could be a little brighter
RGB light bar kinda gets old fast
All in all, I don't think it can be beat for a brand-new laptop close to 1K. Would rather have had a 144Hz screen even if it cost me another 100-200, but only the very expensive high-end models appear to have that.
It IS a sorta bulky laptop. The screen is great quality 60hz 3ms. The fans CAN be loud but on a full 100% cpu and 100% gpu load you're looking at barely breaking 80c which is AWESOME considering my Alienware m14xr1 would hit 95c on bad days.
PROS:It's lightening fast, great design, great looking, excellent speakers for a laptop, and great looking screen. CONS: The only thing that could be improved is to reduce the size of power supply brick.
This is my third ASUS computer, that I now own. I like the brand quality in both of their computers and WIFI routers The quality is differently there
I haven't had any issues with laptop hardware, the computer is extremely fast . My problem is with Windows 10 and putting the laptop in sleep mode, the computer will not stay in that mode for very long
I did all the security and featured updates bringing the laptop from Windows 10 1903 to version 1909. I didn't have a single issue with doing the updates . I was able to update the BIOS , hardware and video card driver without any issues
I think the RGB lighting is a bit over the top with this laptop Also I would have liked a brighter 1080P display , however the resolution of the screen is amazing with the 1660 TI video card
Would I tell someone to buy this laptop for the price tag. Yes I think it's well worth the money if you want a real nice gaming laptop Thanks to the US government for buying it for me.
Regarding gaming and performance, so far I played Jedi Fallen Order on "Epic" graphics and it handled it as if it was running the notepad. I also use it for digital art and its performance it's very smooth.
The only thing I wish I knew before buying was that it doesn't have an SD Card slot. I just can't fathom how a 17" laptop, with such powerful hardware and so much room to spare doesn't have room for it. I knew it would have a webcam, but all the reviewers warned me about that, but absolutely no one mentioned that it didn't have a card slot. Anyway, I would have still bought this one 'cause it's a spectacle in and for itself.
