Unbeatable 7.1 surround sound with virtual bass driverInstead of five smaller, bass-compromising drivers, ROG Theta 7.1's innovative design features four larger discrete Essence drivers in each ear cup to deliver full-spectrum, 7.1-channel surround sound with incredible fidelity and powerful virtual bass. With in-game sounds accurately positioned in 3D space, you'll hear the origin of every gunshot and footstep, bringing the battlefield to life for an unparalleled, immersive gaming experience. |
Exclusive ROG home-theater-grade 7.1 DAC and four ESS 9601 headphone driversROG Theta 7.1 comes with a customized ROG home-theater-grade 7.1 DAC with the SupremeFX S1220A audio codec. Unlike other true 7.1 headsets that use a single amplifier to power multiple drivers, the DAC in ROG Theta 7.1 feeds to four ESS 9601 headphone amps to deliver pinpoint placement of effects within a vast aural landscape. Even with its high-performance home-theater-grade DAC, ROG Theta 7.1 stays cool and comfortable to wear due to a temperature-reducing thermal compound that efficiently dissipates heat. |
AI-powered noise-cancelling microphoneROG Theta 7.1 comes with an AI-powered noise-cancelling microphone, which features a dedicated processor loaded with smart profiles trained by AI to eliminate over 50-million types of background noise while preserving vocal harmonics for crystal-clear in-game voice communication. This smart mic reduces distracting chatter, keyboard clatter and mouse clicks by up to 95%, allowing you to communicate clearly in any environment. Additionally, the detachable, unidirectional microphone is certified by both Discord and TeamSpeak, and an indicator light on the tip of the boom flashes red when the microphone is muted, letting you easily see the microphone's status. |

So far, the headset sounds amazing, my voice sounds crystal clear to others, and the virtual surround sound is amazing once you install the amoury crate software. However, it's been a little over a month and my recordings sounds VERY bugged. The noise skips and creates a replica of the proper sound but in a very low quality manner. In simple terms, it's extremely bugged.
I am hoping that it is a firmware issue that I installed the 17th of July, 2020. I say that because I believe that may have caused the bugging for the recordings. I will see what I can do and try to fix it. If this continues, and I can't find a fix after the next firmware update. I'll sadly have wasted $150 and will need to buy a new one. I will come back and change the rating from 2 to 5 if there's a fix.
*EDIT 8/20/2020*
It turns out that my computer was at fault here. It was not the headset. I bought a new PC, and the headset worked just fine there, and the recordings as well. I factory reset my laptop and the recordings sound perfectly fine again. So again, it was NOT the headset's problem. It's working great again!
Now when I first got these I plugged it in to my PS4 as I mainly play on console and I noticed the sound was really low. Dismally low. Someone speaking at normal volume could easily overcome the sound of this semi-openback headset and adjusting the volume rocker wheel was doing nothing. So I whipped out my gaming laptop and plugged these in with a direct usb-c connection and there was all the sound which sounds amazing, more on that later.
So I downloaded some software and adjusted settings on the PC thinking maybe they stay on the headset (although I doubt it has anything to do with it) and went back to my PS4.
Plugged it back in while it was off. Still really really low volume. I was getting kinda nervous about my purchase so I tried the simplest thing. Unplugged it and plugged it back in and voila! The volume was there and the volume wheel worked too.
Now as for sound quality. I’d say it’s really good. Crispy and crunchy high tones, nice resonating mids, the bass is there but it’s not overwhelming. So I’d say this is a bit of a colder/accurate sound profile so NOT FOR BASSHEADS. The semi-open back nature of these means that you get great audio positioning. There has been many times on Apex Legends where I’ve heard enemy footsteps way before I see them or they see me and I can aim to where they’re coming from. Also with that semi open back design you can hear yourself speaking too so you don’t find yourself talking louder than you usually would.
As far as fit and finish goes these are really good. Nothing creaks or squeaks, they look amazing especially with that rgb. Really comfortable as I’ve already played several hours with them on and had no problems and my ears don’t get too hot. The only thing I wish was different was the headband padding. It’s comfortable but it’s a bit thin and I can see that being the first place to wear out.
So the TL;DR unplug it and plug it back in on your PS4 if the volume is too low. Sound quality is great and accurate although if you’re really into bass look elsewhere. Really comfortable to wear for long hours and you’ll look cooler while doing so with rgb.
UPDATE: It has been a year and 4 months since I purchased this headset and so far so good. Longevity does seem to be a bit of an issue. The headband seems to be fraying quite a bit and unfortunately the LEDs on the left ear cup have gone out. Audio still works perfectly though. And ear pads haven’t given out on me yet. If Asus releases and updated version of these I’ll be the first one to buy it, but as it stands I’m going to use these until they explode.

1. The microphone is only tolerable if you have noise canceling on, the AI feature on and your microphone output maxed and close to your mouth for it to be tolerable. It’s an OK for the mic. I think including the mic in the trade offs was a mistake but maybe they didn’t have a choice with the limited space and what not.
2. It’s not plug and play, you have to fine tune this beast and then it becomes a beauty you see. There’s a lack of bass on purpose to have better sound quality for when it comes to gaming. Personally, I think it’s worth trading off but you could definitely argue that some enjoy music while gaming. Yes you’d be right, that is nice but they are made for sweaty ranked players that don’t do that because that’s a disadvantage.
3. For the price, if you don’t care just get the delta, it has a better mic and isn’t as large. Checking out steelseries Arctis pro (had that before) can’t go wrong there as well! Only if you have a medium to small head though lol.
HOWEVER, If you are like me and you know you’re looking for something very specific, then this is the closest you’re going to get. When it comes to sound, once you put on a preset in the armoury program, it’s not fair in shooters. You absolutely hear tiny details you shouldn’t be able to hear, that are far away and that is where this thing makes me smile!
I want to touch on surround sound. I had virtual before and the rog theta is one of few that has real surround, that’s the reason they are huge. In my honest opinion and experience, the difference is huge in a small way and I know that sounds odd. Before I would be able to hear steps just the same but only halfway down the hall but couldn’t tell where exactly. Sometimes people coming up behind me from a different floor or if the enemy is simply close by in the next room, that’s hard to deal with. I’d always have a rough idea of where but never REALLY knew. Left, front and right would be clear most of the time. So distance is a thing, extra rooms, flanks and above or below. I’d have to seriously focus to establish what isn’t clear and would rely on my experience to sort of make an educated guess. Then I’d move accordingly. K now with the theta, I can easily hear all the way down the hall, pinpoint what floor, room, where they are in the room, behind me and flanks even when close are crystal clear. The small details are suddenly very clear. It’s really not fair and now I understand how I would get shot across a wall in game out of nowhere. It feels like you are a world class Olympian runner and you finally found a pair that allows you to run as fast as you can actually run, without hesitation. You feel free and just so much more comfortable/capable with nothing holding you back anymore. Having knowledge of clear small detail is just a massive advantage! So the difference is distance of details picked up, so you hear further and quality of information, you can pinpoint stuff that you wouldn’t be able to before, even far away.
I took a star off for the microphone because I don’t understand why you couldn’t get a decent microphone at that price point, it actually hurts my brain. We are in 2021 you can stuff the sickest technology in those cans but you couldn’t do the mic. Theta 2 7.1 should fix that. Then value for money I would take a star off. Overall 4 out of 5 stars because the sound of these cans are so beautiful in a shooter, I overlook the OK mic and the pick a preset and the expensive purchase due to the sound quality. But that’s on you to make that decision.
EDIT: it’s been a while now, they are still great for those advantages I listed but I have to add another negative. At max volume, I sometimes can’t help but feel it’s not loud enough. It’s on the border of I can live with it and I can’t. Again, just a very specific product, in 2021 I would look at steelseries pro, Logitech pro, corsair virtuoso or hyperX if you want something good that’s not expensive and finally i just ordered the audeze mobius everyone swears by, which is expensive but hey, I’m on a journey for the perfect cans! Hope this helps, cheers!
That’s my two cents. Enjoy, stay healthy and safe! Cheers!
Pros:
-built well
-high quality feel
-for the price sound is on par with other options
-RGB lights are bright and look nice
-USB-C connection
-USB-C to USB type A extender/adapter included
-2 sets of earcushions included, 1 set leatherette, 1 hybrid cloth/leatherette for good sound quality but higher breathability
Cons:
-in-line options are lacking, as there is only a volume switch and an rgb switch built in.
-shortest length is still too large
overall a good headset, but i have returned mine as it would not fit correctly at the shortest length options. do not buy if you have a small or even medium sided head.
Ventajas:
Se escucha muy bien el sonido 3D y los Sonidos son fuertes
Desventajas:
Si no hay ruido, se escucha en el auricular izquierdo el zumbido del procesador.
Hay momentos que después de 4hrs me molesta el colchón las orejas
