Update - March 6, 2011 - Still really pleased with the router, great signal and all. The only added comment I have is that after using an external hard drive attached to the router, I wonder why most people would even want that feature. The reason is transfers of files to and from hard drives thru a router in this way are soooo sloooooowwwww! I was lucky to get 2mb per second when moving files to the drive. Turns out this is very common for NAS, not an Asus problem. So for my home use, I just connected the drive back to my pc and share the folders with my network, and only use the usb port for my printer (which IS very useful). I guess in a business setting where smaller sized files are being stored on the NAS the feature could be fine, just not for my small household network.
Update - March 11, 2012 - Router is still working as well as it always has, haven't rebooted in months, and even then it was when I had actually lost my dsl signal to the modem, not this router's fault. Still using wireless printing to my Canon MP530 printer. I did find however that I can't use the scanner if my printer's plugged into the router; when I scan I must move the usb to my pc's usb hub, scan whatever, then plug back into router for normal wireless printing. There may be a way to scan with the router connected, I'm just to lazy to try and I don't use the scanner very often anyway. Oh, and I'm still using the Tomato-usb firmware that I flashed to the router last year, rock-solid!
Update - August 10, 2014 - Is this Asus router still working? Why yes it is! Hard to believe it's been over 2 years since the last update. I don't even think about the router, unless someone comes over who needs the wifi key, it just keeps working... well. I've probably rebooted it 5 or 6 times since my last update, and in the majority of those reboots my local phone company was having a city-wide dsl outage. Haven't made any changes since the Tomato USB flash, and the laptop I'm typing this update on is connected via wifi right now. Being in west Texas, though, I do have to dust the unit every now and then. How long with it last? Check back in another year or two to find out!
Update - August 16, 2015 - Nothing new to report. Router still working solidly, no hiccups. Am in the middle of MLB season and am streaming games thru my Roku 3, flawless.
Update - February 24, 2017 - I packed the router and my other belongings last year and moved across the country. Took out the router from storage last week to use at my folks house ( they had a cheapo Encore router that wasn't working so well), and the Asus is working just as good as the day I set it up back in August of 2010. The only other computer-related product I've had last this long is my trusty old 17" Acer laptop which I bought in March of that same year, and is still working well. Quite the workhorses.
So far, so good! Flawless performance through a LAN connection with a 1.0 Gbps connection speed. File transfer speeds within our home network are greatly improved over our previous network setup. However, I have made a few changes that resulted in max speeds on our wireless N devices. I changed the following, under the "Wireless" menu in your router UI:
-Wireless mode I changed to "N Only" (leave in auto if you have B/G only devices).
-Bandwith I changed to 40 MHz only.
-replaced the middle and the right antenna (antenna nearest the AC power supply) with some larger antennas I had on hand from our previous router. This resulted in a 5-10 percent improvement in wireless range/strength.
I also updated our laptop's wireless drivers to the latest available version. We were getting occasional drops in our connection but after some research it appears this particular chipset (Atheros 9285) is notorious for this when connected to N devices, as well as not maintaining a consistent connection speed. So make sure your wireless devices have the most up-to-date drivers as well before faulting the router.
---------------------------------------
Bottom line, this is a nice router for the money. I love how it automatically chooses the best channels and that my range has been extended over our old B/G router (A Linksys WRT54GS). With the latest firmware installed, the user interface is extremely easy to navigate despite the somewhat complex settings this router offers. The configuration tool that runs when you first plug in your Ethernet cable and open your browser is intuitive yet simple enough basically anyone can work it out, it's not dependent on the end user's level of experience. Gaming and streaming are both greatly improved as well. My wife and I both agree that Netflix content seems to come through in higher quality now. I tried one of my favorite games online, which is a first person shooter that is fairly rich in graphical details on some of the maps, and I was struggling to play... not because it was slow, but because I was not used to such a smooth gaming experience when compared to our old router! I practically have to relearn online gaming because I didn't realize just how much the Linksys router was degrading the experience and that I had adapted to that! Don't get me wrong, it was a great router in it's time, and still is, but the experience is definitely improved with our ASUS RT-N16. We are very happy with this router.
The only serious issue I have had thus far (and it appears to be an ongoing one from what I was reading online) is trouble with firmware updates. This is what knocks a star off of it for me, because the difficulty in applying a firmware update may be too much for a novice and cause them to either return it or re-sell what is otherwise an excellent router. I've read that even trying to install the stock firmware has either bricked these routers or failed to even upload the firmware altogether. The latter happened to me, but fortunately I've been around the block before on firmware updates and was able to find a workaround. Here is what I did to update my firmware. Other methods are available on Volodymyr Shcherbyna's blog (google search for his "Just another Blog" page).
1. Downloaded the latest firmware update from the Asus website.
Unzip/extract the file to your desktop.
2. Insert the disk and install the utilities. Launch the Firmware Recovery tool, and use it to navigate to the unzipped firmware package ending in .trx. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPLOAD IT YET!
3. Disable your current internet connection, either by disabling it in network and sharing center or unplugging your current router/modem. Using the provided yellow Ethernet cable, plug it into one of the LAN ports labeled 1-4 in the back of the Asus router, and connect the other end of the cable to your computer's Ethernet port. Plug in the power to your Asus router. You should now get a new network connection on your computer and a prompt on your computer will appear. Just choose "Home".
4. Using the detection utility installed from the disc, search for your router. Keep refreshing until it shows up. Once it appears, with the router connected to your computer and to it's AC power, use a pen or paper clip to press the reset button. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds (I always count to 35 just to be safe). Keep holding the reset button, and carefully disconnect the AC power. Keep holding the button for another 30 seconds. Reconnect the AC power and continue holding the reset button.
5. While still holding the reset button, look at the front of your router. You should see that the only active LED is the one that indicates which port your computer is connected to. If this is the only active light, you are now in recovery mode. Keep holding the reset button, and return to the firmware recovery tool. Upload your firmware file and once the upload completes, release the reset button. So, you should have held down the reset button continuously from step four until the file upload completed.
6. In about 5 minutes, the firmware update should complete. Disconnect the power from your router for about 30 seconds and plug it back in again. Wait 30 seconds for it to boot, then open your web browser. You should see the setup utility in your browser. If so, you've successfully updated your firmware! If you can't get it to upload the new file, re-read the steps carefully and try again. Chances are you just made an error entering recovery mode. If no luck, Google is you friend. someone will have a method that works for you!
This ASUS is extremely stable, however, and has robust wireless antennae that give great reception.
DD-WRT works great on it too. Since I ended up not being impressed with it as a main router I went ahead and installed DD-WRT and now have it running perfectly as a wireless bridge and repeater. It's very stable and fast.
It's a great product but don't make the mistake of thinking the fast internal hardware means you are buying the fastest possible home router.

When I bought it, the stock firmware was sloooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, hanged often and straight up crashed sometimes, angered me to hell and back...
BUT that's okay! Because the firmware's gotten an update some many months ago and it's smooth as butter, finally! =D
Other then that, I never had 1 issue with this router, ever. Never had to reset it or turn it off. No wireless connections issues on ANY product ever, 1 laptop (macbook pro), a PS3, XBob 360, 5 different cell phones, 2 tv's, a 3DS XL, a PSP3000, even my neighbors once when I forgot to put a password for my wifi, have all connected flawlessly and have always had constant speeds to date; except my neighbor, who lost connection after a pw was setup :)
To be fair, most electronics are used in the vicinity of the router, BUT, even behind 4 walls on the other end of my apartment on the balcony, I have good reception on my cell (that I can remember...)
So even for a user who doesn't want to mess with making the router better with custom firmware and yada wtv, it works perfectly =D
**EDIT**
Well well, weird that so soon after my review my wan ports all died during the 2nd week of february...
Internet no longer works with wired connections, on both cat5e and cat6 cables.
WiFi on the other hand works no problem, so then I did some research, then I saw the many 1 star reviews of the EXACT same problem on newegg.ca
Here's to hoping my Asus support does not go as bad as many others :S
If it does, this is dropping to 1 star, since it's sort of a piss off that I buy an expensive router from a supposedly renowned company for quality products only to have it die while 2 other $20-$40 routers I have owned in the past both lasted 5+ years each and were only replaced to quite literally waste my money on needless upgrades :(

D-Link was getting a little dated, so it's hard to say I hated it... Nearing the end of it's life, 3 years or so, my old DR-615 was dropping WIFI connectivity and I needed something delicious.
After some quick research, I found this puppy. Originally it was beng marketed as a "gaming" router, but that's not why I bought it. This router is able to run custom firmware. I won't explain what that is, look it up, and prepare your head fat for pure awesome.
Having a solid router, with the ability to customize it if I want is an awesome feeling...
So here's why I gave it a solid 4 out of 5 and what kept it from a 5.
Pros:
-Good range
-Easy setup
-Custom firmware like DD-WRT and Tomato.
-Awesome user interface when accessing the router. The GUI looks good, and gives you a ton of options advanced or simple.
-Ok,ok... so here we go... My favourite part of this router... OMG I love this. And it's not even the firmware customization... There are TWO count'em TWO USB connections on the back. So not only does this router deal with a lot of connections flawlessly, it also can act as a media server. NOW with the AiCloud app / setting you can access your router and watch movies virtually ANYWHERE with a mobile device. I was sitting on an airplane, watching people load cargo, and I needed something to do. So I loaded up the AICloud app, accessed my router, rummaged through the folders on my WD Passport, and watched my legally ripped copies of Gundam... AMAZING.
CONS!
- it big. Had a hard time finding space for it because my cable idiot installed my modem in such a stupid place. But if you're lucky, and you had an awesome cable guy maybe he installed your modem somewhere useful... with lots of space.
- out of the box it has "good" range... But just good... If you want some long range wifi you'll need to install the custom firmware which I consider a bit of a con for the not so technical people out there.
