Crafted to Perfection
ZenBook is renowned for its unique, stunning looks, and you’ll instantly recognize the iconic Zen-inspired spun-metal finish on ZenBook 3’s all-metal unibody enclosure — a finish that takes 40 painstaking steps to create. But we’ve added a beautiful twist, using a special 2-phase anodizing process to create stunning golden edge highlights. The result is an ideal combination of durability and portability.
Thinner, Lighter, Tougher
ZenBook has always been the benchmark for thin and light design, and with ZenBook 3 we’ve taken it to a whole new level. Using premium, aerospace-grade aluminum — lighter than standard laptop alloy, but 50% stronger — we reduced the weight to only 2 lbs and reduced it to an amazingly thin 0.46” profile . To keep the display lightweight and ultra-slim, yet tough, we covered it with just 0.4mm of super-strong Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is twice as thin as standard cover glass.
ZenBook 3 is paired with a newly designed display with improved clarity and form factor. The ultra-slim bezel is just 0.3” wide, giving ZenBook 3 a class-leading 82% screen-to-body ratio. More importantly, it gives you a distraction-free view of the stunning 12.5-inch Full HD screen. With its wide 178° viewing angles, superb color reproduction and crisp detail, it really does need to be seen to be believed.
ZenBook 3 overcomes the challenge of combining high-performance components into the smallest chassis yet for the ZenBook series. The result is an unbelievably powerful laptop, with the latest Intel Core i5 processor and a fast 256GB SSD and the latest USB-C port that supports display. So there’s no need to worry about what you can or can’t do with ZenBook 3 — it’s practically unstoppable.
Robust Cooling Performance
With ZenBook 3’s Intel Core i5 processor inside a slim chassis, our engineers had to invent a brand-new cooling system using state-of-the-art components such as a liquid-crystal-polymer fan impeller that’s just 0.3mm thick and a copper-alloy heat pipe with walls a mere 0.1mm thick. This innovative cooling system is a mere 3mm thick, and the warm air is gently routed through hidden vents in the hinge for efficient, serenely quiet cooling even under full load.
All-Day Battery with Quick Charging
Despite its ultra-slim design, ZenBook 3 provides battery life to last you throughout the day. To achieve its remarkable up to 9 hours* lifespan, we designed a special high-capacity 40Wh lithium-polymer battery, specially shaped to fit precisely into the impossibly thin profile. We also added fast charging technology that allows you to charge it up to 60% capacity in just 49 minutes. Stay charged for longer and spend less time charging!
ZenBook 3’s full-size backlit keyboard stretches from edge to edge, with just a 2.1mm bezel at each side, and has a key pitch (the distance between the center of each key) of 19.8mm, the same as most desktop keyboards. And although the keyboard is incredibly slim — 28% thinner than the previous generation, in fact — there’s still an impressive 0.8mm key travel, which is twice as much as some rivals! ZenBook 3’s precision touchpad is cleverly engineered for maximum comfort and accuracy, with a glass covering for smooth control, and incorporating palm-rejection technology, Smart Gestures and handwriting support.
Accessing your ZenBook 3 couldn’t be easier or more secure. With the built-in fingerprint sensor in the touchpad and Windows Hello, there’s no need to type in your password every time to log in. Just a single touch is all it takes allowing you to unlock your ZenBook 3 as effortlessly as a smartphone.
To give ZenBook 3 unsurpassed audio capabilities, the ASUS Golden Ear team and audiophile specialists Harman Kardon joined forces to produce the next generation of ASUS SonicMaster audio technology, and the results are astonishing. An array of four separate high-quality speakers is powered by a smart four-channel amplifier to bring you true surround-sound that envelops you with distortion-free, cinema-quality realism. ZenBook 3 really does give you the most incredible sound you’ve ever heard on a laptop.

As this is somewhat of a niche market, finding a laptop with this small of a footprint priced under $1000 while still being a decent computer can be somewhat of a challenge. The Zenbook3 does an excellent job at filling that role; With about a 12 inch footprint and weighing only 2 pounds it's very easy to fold up and take this laptop wherever you need to go. The i5-7200u offers more than enough power to utilize the laptop as a light to mid range workstation and the Intel 620, while not strong enough to run most AAA games, is still able to do light 3D work and perhaps even some lighter gaming with the settings dropped. It should have no problem running older 3D games and most 2D titles. The 8 gigs of ram might be a limiting factor to some users, however I haven't found myself using more than 50% as of yet.
The battery life on the Zenbook is very reasonable(I admit I don't have much perspective in this category), I got about 10 hours of actual use on a single charge with relatively heavy usage in updating the laptop, installing usual software, and using generally for a few hours. This translated to a little over 24 hours on a single charge when time spent in sleep mode is included. The battery didn't seem to drain much, if at all, while in sleep mode and the laptop turned itself off after a little while of no use.
The keyboard, as others have stated, is the Zenbook's biggest problem. It doesn't offer much travel at all and what little response you do get feels very stiff and somewhat mushy. It's not impossible to get used to, but I imagine it will never feel quite that great type anything long form on. The track pad on the other hand, depending on how you use it, is fantastic. The gesture inputs feel very responsive and the fingerprint scanner doesn't get in the way at all, it might be a problem however if you are a left hand user. I think it is best to treat this track pad as a touch device as the buttons offer so little feedback, it's hard to tell if you've actually clicked and are hard to use on a laptop of this weight anyway.
Aesthetically this laptop is a very beautiful piece of hardware. The pictures found on the amazon listing are very misleading, the shade of the silver appears much darker, the gold accents are *much* more subtle, and the ring texture found on the top is much more subdued. It appears to be reasonably durable with it's metal construction and gorilla glass screen, however, since it's so thin I probably wouldn't carry this in a bag without an additional padded sleeve because it feels like flex might be an issue without care.
The screen packed into the Zenbook, while only 1080p, is still a reasonably high quality display. Colors appear vibrant and deep although I did notice with some issues in the response time with some slight ghosting when scrolling down a web page. I can't imagine a 4K screen would be an advantage in a laptop of this size as it can already be difficult to read on a 12.5 inch 1080p screen without font scaling and the hardware wouldn't be strong enough to drive most 4K content other than video.
A major note is the single USB-C port on the right side. I've never been one to have a problem with dongles and this generation's dongles come in such a small form factor it's hard to see it as an annoyance. I can see how this would be a major drawback to some users, but for my uses I have no problem with plugging in a dongle occasionally.
Overall, if you're a user looking for something light, small, very portable, while still holding onto some power; The Zenbook is definitely one to consider. It provides a very professional and attractive aesthetic in a package that might rival the Thinkpad series in usefulness and at a now incredibly reasonable price. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better value currently without looking into refurbished or 2 gen old hardware. This laptop won't be a replacement for your desktop anytime soon, but it is incredibly useful when used in conjunction with one and if you're on of the few users that falls into the niche this laptop fills it is an absolute dream of a value.
What makes this one stand apart is that it has a standard Intel Core i5 processor and not a Mobile M processor like the Macbook and other ultra thin laptops. Yes the fan has to run more often but I barely hear it and if you tone down the CPU performance you can get the fan to run less often.
Yes this laptop only has 1 USBC port but the reality is that port is a "thunderbolt" or USB-C 3.1 port which means 1 single adapter can give you Ethernet, 3x USB 3.0 ports, SD and Micro SD ports, HDMI and even pass through charging. I spent $20 on ebay and got an adapter that does all of this perfectly. Asus sells one that may or may not come with the i7 model but if purchased separately will cost $120 so for that same cost buy 4 of the ones I have and your set at home, on the go and at work.
Of course this laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card - DUH its WAY to small for that and graphics processing is not the purpose of this. The built in CPU/GPU, super fast SSD and Ram are enough for the everyday user.
Lastly, the look of this model is superb and the pictures on Amazon DON'T do it justice. In real life its a much darker grey and the gold is not yellow like in the pictures.
I recommend this machine for those on the GO. This laptop is for people who just need portability, speed and convenience.
There's only one problem... the keyboard suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. It's literally (literally literally) the worst keyboard I've ever used. The keystrokes are so shallow, it's almost like typing on a touchscreen. However, they also have a very high actuation force, which means that if you don't press harder than you think you need to, the keystroke won't register. If you do, the key uncomfortably bottoms out. Also (if you're not a nerd you can stop reading here) many of the keys behave abnormally, registering the key as being pressed and released instantaneously when it is only pressed.
EDIT 2018-06-19: Knocking off another star because it is almost impossible to charge this laptop using anything other than the stock charger. If you want to use any wired device (keyboard, mouse, monitor, USB devices) while this thing is plugged in, just forget it. It won't happen.
1. Yes, the keyboard isn't that good. The keys are very flat and don't depress very much -- I like my Dell XPS 12 keyboard much better. And, weirdly, the keys are larger than my Dell. I suggest you try one out in the flesh.
2. Yes, the fan, on high, is pretty loud. Otherwise pretty quiet.
3. It comes with a fair bit of ASUS bloatware that you have to remove.
4. I cannot get -- and it seems that it is indeed impossible to do -- the function keys to reverse so that you don't have hold down FN every time you want to adjust the volume, brightness, etc. Very frustrating. If anyone can fix, please advise.

Not happy with Asus as a company though. I tried to buy a Hub that they have on their website but just about impossible to find anyone that sells it.Seems to be a problem with availabilty. I ended up buying a different item from Amazon so Asus just lost some business. Definitely not what I would expect from Asus. Hope we don't have any problems with this Zenbook 3.
