I think they are grossly overpriced, this one included. But it was the best option for my needs I felt. Just writing the review to let people know it does indeed work just fine. I put a bit more faith in Asus products than others, even though they probably don't actually make this piece of hardware, I don't know.
I do think it would be better if the usb cable from the dock to the laptop would plug into the BACK of the dock with a right-angle usb connection of some kind. Instead, this thick usb cable stick out to the side in a big "U"
Now, I am impressed that all of this works with a single USB 3.0 connection to the laptop. However, I have noticed at times that the processor gets bogged down if I am copying files through the Gb connection. You can see two symptoms: 1. macro-blocked images on the external display (i.e. display data is being chopped or compressed) and 2. excessive CPU usage from the DisplayLink executables that are part of the driver package.
My laptop has a dual-core i5; I suspect that with an i7, one would have a better experience. In other words, everything works correctly - the software drivers are robust and I've not experienced any issues - but you need a fast machine to run Gb ethernet and an external display.
This device gives me additional USB 3.0 ports to use; it also enables me to use external monitors.
The DVI-D port on this device supports my Dell 1220p monitor without any problem. But I doubt it will support 1440p monitors.
The only thing I would like to have is a indicator light that tells me the power is on because I have no way to tell if the power is plugged in or not. I have another Lenovo USB 3.0 dock which has a red LED on if there is power. The lack of this feature is the reason of 4 stars, otherwise it will be 5.
