- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2012So I wish there were more reviews like this on amazon for monitors & XBOX. Although I know most people using this monitor will be looking for a great PC monitor for daily use or gaming, I am basing this review for the Xbox 360. Others may feel the same as me, but I really DON'T like the look of HD tv's on games, & most have HD response lag. My HD TVs look great on TV/Movies but on games not that great & trust me I've tried my best to get good settings. & others may be able to relate to me but I am not just a casual gamer. I play games on the 360 competitively & participate in tournaments and such. I heard this was a monitor that was going to be used at some LAN events so I picked it up to get used to it. I was hating my 27 inch Sylvania & felt like there was some HD delays that were affecting my gameplay. Anyways, I bought this monitor. Very cheap, about $160. This was my first monitor that I bought for gaming on the 360. When I got it it took my a day or 2 to get used to the size, but afterwords I love it. I really enjoy gaming on the 23 inch a lot more. Also I play all my games in 720P because I record my gameplay, many of you may know about that, there aren't very many 1080P capture cards out there, I have an HDMI capture card & record at 720P. That's a different topic though. My point in bringing this up is that 720P looks GREAT. Although I do play on it sometimes through 1080P & man is it sharp. This monitor has a very clear picture on both 720p & 1080p. I tweeked my settings quite a bit to make it to my liking. It looked pretty nice out of the box but as many would I went through all the settings to see what there were & checked them out. My picture has great color, clear picture, good response time, & is 10x better than my HD TV. About 3 months after playing on this monitor I hooked up my HD TV to see how playing on a 27 inch was again....I just about puked. Part of the problem is that I wasn't used to the bigger size (so that was understandable) but the picture was just not even close to as clear as it was on this monitor. This monitor is very cheap & high quality for such a great price, & I would recommend it to others.
In conclusion, like I said I use mine on my Xbox 360 for mainly FPS gaming. I'm more than a casual gamer so I take things like response time (this one has 2ms) very seriously as anyone that plays fast paced games seriously knows that it really makes a difference. The color on this monitor, picture, & response time are really great. I would really recomend this to others for such a great low price. Budget it not too big of a deal for myself as I work 5 days a week but for many young gamers or just somebody with a tight budget, or just not wanting to spend that much, this monitor will work for you. It'll be great for gaming & normal computer activities. I've had it for about half a year now & haven't had any trouble with it at all. It works great on my Xbox 360 & my computer. I hope this review helped some people out there & especially those who are maybe looking for a good monitor for your XBOX as many reviews never mention xbox only PC. It works great for both. I would never go back to gaming on my Xbox 360 on my old HD TV (even though it's a nice TV) it's nothing compared to the clarity & response time of this monitor. I will be looking into future Asus products as I really liked this one & once again at such a great price. That is all.

UPDATE 12/9/12
I bought this monitor one year ago and decided that I needed another one.
The new one is, I think, just a little bit better than the one year old monitor.
With both set at their (normal) highest (and identical) settings the new one is noticeably brighter, and has a slightly whiter screen. Or to put it another way: the older one has a faint tint to it and is less bright.
It took a bit of fiddling around to get both monitors matching as close as possible, but a difference is still noticeable. Having said that I have no doubt at all that in a short time I won't even notice it. After all it's only noticeable when both screens (side by side) have a bright white to light gray background. With most desktop backgrounds you would have to look closely to discern the difference.
So I now have 2 identical monitors out of a set of 3, and I'm very pleased with the results. On the bad side is the fact that the 3rd monitor really stands out now. The ASUS monitors are SO MUCH BETTER!
I'm sure that there are better monitors in the 23" class, but not for the price of this one. There is also a newer version of this one but if you already have one and want a matched set buy it ASAP, while they are still made.
If you're on a budget you can't make a mistake with this on. If you're not on a budget this is still a great buy.
PS - Windows 7 has a monitor set up utility built in that you need to run to make the monitors match as best as possible. DO IT. If your OS doesn't, find some software that will help you match the 2 screens.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall this monitor is very good.
I have a 3 monitor setup for a flight simulator. Unfortunately (for now) they're all different brands. This means that the color, contrast, and clarity is a little off, one from the other. I also switch the desktop image frequently.
The far left button at the bottom of this monitor switches the color settings from 5 presets that help to "match" the screen colors/contrast to the other monitors. If you only have one monitor it's a bigger plus than you might think. But with 2 or more mismatched monitors it only goes to show how much better this one is.
A couple of the complaints from others need some clarification, though.
1) Built-in speakers. Who in the world expects good sound quality from a slim LCD monitor??? I may have a tin ear but I want, and do have, better speakers than will ever come from a computer monitor (& I only paid about $40 for them).
2) The button press problem is somewhat real in that they ARE hard to push. Compounding the problem is that they seem to require a hard 45 degree push upward and outward on the curved bottom edge. I say that this is a "somewhat" problem in that most people will rarely use the buttons after it's set up to their liking.
3) Related to the button press problem is the VERY dimly printed icons above the buttons. My icons are MUCH fainter than the one shown on Amazon. But once everything is set up you'll rarely use them anyway.
4) Highly polished bezel. I dislike the bezel, but after a very short while I don't even notice it any more.
If one of my other monitors would just die (PLEASE DIE, OLD MONITOR. PLEASE DIE!) I would definitely buy another one of these.

GaryReviewed in Canada on April 12, 20114.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor for the price.
For anyone looking to either upgrade their existing monitor or just get a new one, the ASUS VH236H is a great choice in its price range. It supports resolutions up to 1920x1080 (1080P) has excellent colors and response times (2 MS), and there are also input ports for HDMI, SPDIF, and DVI, making it ideal for people who watch movies and/or play Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games but don't have an HDTV.
As an added bonus it's a very nice-looking piece of hardware, albeit one that attracts a lot of dust. Keep a cloth handy.
For someone who plays a lot of videogames, the VH236H does the job in fine style. There's no ghosting even in the fastest-moving games, and the image is sharp and clear at all times. Hooking up an Xbox 360 to this monitor with an HDMI cable was painless and the end result looks really good.
For general day-to-day PC usage, the VH236H is a solid performer. Everything just looks better and is more colorful. If you've used only 4:3 monitors up until now, you'll appreciate the extra screen real estate.
The VH236H has a few faults, but they're relatively minor. While the monitor has built-in speakers, they are of mediocre quality and sound rather tinny. Fortunately you don't have to use them with your computer if you have a sound card and speakers already. If you're looking to play console games and want good sound though, you may have to buy a SPDIF cable and output the audio to something better.
Accessing the menus with the VH236H is kind of awkward, since the buttons are a bit stiff and the menus themselves are hard to navigate at first. Once you get used to them they're fine - and there are lots of settings to play around with - but they're not the most intuitive set of options around.
The viewing angle on the VH236H could be a bit better, too. While it's fine if you're right in front of it, it loses clarity at certain angles, like when you're looking down at it from a fairly high angle or off to the sides a fair ways. There's no tilt option on the neck either, so you're stuck with the angle the monitor is at.
For the price and general high quality of the VH236H monitor, these flaws are easy to overlook. If you want a good flatscreen monitor and don't have a ton of money to spend, it's a great choice.
