Wow. Buy this if you want more gaming power than an XBoxOne or PS4, in a portable laptop.
    5 out of 5 stars
Wow. Buy this if you want more gaming power than an XBoxOne or PS4, in a portable laptop.
BACKGROUND: I'm a gamer (and a professor too :-). I wanted a laptop that could play my favorite game (Dark Souls 3) at max settings, 1080p/30fps, and also run R for statistical analyses. Dark Souls 3 is a graphics-intensive game, and my previous laptop could not even muster 10fps, with its AMD A10 APU.QUICK FEATURE SUMMARY: The ASUS ZX53VW has an Intel i5-6300HQ quad-core processor, and NVidia GTX 960M w/4GB dedicated RAM, 8GB of RAM, and a 512Mb SSD, DVD (yes!), 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 USB C port (smartphone), and SD card readerCUT TO THE CHASE: If you want the power of an Xbox One or PS4, next-gen console, in a laptop, this is the most inexpensive solution—it is the cheapest laptop that outperforms gaming consoles. This computer is blazingly fast. It played Dark Souls 3 (again a graphics intensive game) at max settings 1080p/30-35fps, and at low settings 1080p/50-60fps. That's BETTER performance than that you get on an Xbox One or PS4.Negatives? I don't see a pop-out for the battery so you might have to pop screws to replace.Yes, buy this. Especially if you can get it for <$700 like I did during Black Friday!

I try to find reasons not to like whatever I do end up committing too. This is one of those electronic/computer purchases that I haven't felt scammed in one way, shape or form. The SSD drive is absolutely lighting fast. I mean it is incredible how far we've come in such a short time. I had an ASUS duo core processor with 4GB of Ram that brought me 6 wonderful years of joy but, this here, this boot up time omg! What a world of a difference my goodness. My particular buy is the signature series that comes without any (and I mean NONE) bloatware which probably makes the boot up time so freakin' fast. I know I'm making it a big deal but I feel compelled too because if your like me who came from a none gaming laptop to this "cross" platform laptop gaming rig you'll understand. I'm still stunned every time I press the button. Like press, boop, sign in screen. As your reading this, that is the speed... Yup. The IPS matte screen is beautiful and does not disappoint at all. ASUS is known for being a provider of some of the best, world class monitors and they made no exceptions here for sure. Get yourself a mouse so you won't have to even worry about the pad everyone is fussing about. I never had any issues with it but then again, I went with a mouse a month after my purchase.

Now, if you order yourself one make sure you do the following: Download Razer Cortex (free app), update the NVIDIA drivers, change your control panel settings to optimal performance & experience this beast of a laptop run older games at max and newer games at medium to high settings with ease. When the hardware is being pushed, the Razer Cortex program and NVIDIA drivers work in conjunction to give you the best possible gaming experience on the laptop's, internally provided 8 GB of RAM. It is a game changer and why I posted it here because of my marvelous experience with it. Also, it will run loud when a game demands juice to keep things operating at normal temps, so I recommend getting yourself a cooling pad just in case. So far I have had this bad boy for about 8 months and I have grown fond of how it effortlessly handles my every day computing tasks and gaming needs.

If you are on the fence and worried about "future proofing" yourself always remember that there isn't such a laptop that can provide this. Everything is etched in permanently, hence why I believe this is an excellent "entry" level gaming laptop. Not too much & not too little, it packs a punch with the right program on its side and doesn't leave you feeling robbed. Too me, it was worth every penny.
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2017
I saw a few reviews for this laptop mentioning that the screen might be less than stellar. I was a little worried about this but decided to order anyways, thinking that if it were bad, I could always send it back. If anyone else is sitting on the fence with this same worry, don't worry! The screen on mine is FANTASTIC. Lovely colors, bright, and great viewing angles.

The keyboard on this laptop is also fantastic -- it has a great, clicky feel which is fantastic to type on.

Everyone who has said that the touchpad isn't great is correct. The touchpad is not the best I have ever used. Maybe not exactly the worst, but not great. If you tap to click instead of pressing to click, it's much better. Pressing to click shows off a wobbly, loose motion that sometimes misregisters left clicks as right clicks.

That being said, if you're thinking of buying this to play games, I hope that you aren't wanting to do that using the touchpad (does anyone actually do that on a gaming laptop?!). The touchpad is perfectly adequate for navigating around the web and Windows, again, particularly if you don't press to click.

Finally, you might notice that oddly Windows shows this machine as GL553VW Signature Edition. The box mine came in and the sticker on the bottom of the machine both say ZX53VW; I'm not at all bothered by that since all the other specs are completely correct, and hey, it's a signature edition image! No bloatware, hooray!

The fan can get a bit loud when gaming, but it's fairly silent when just using Chrome or lighter tasks light that, and the keyboard and touch pad don't seem to get hot even while gaming, which is a huge plus for me. Even when the fan does get going, it's never intrusive.

Overall, love this machine. Nice rigid case, nice keyboard, and speedy without tons of bloatware (or actually, any that I could spot). Also a lovely screen. Not a perfect touchpad, but if Asus had to cut corners anywhere on this machine, I am so glad they decided to do it there instead of giving it a crummy screen, bad keyboard, or overheating problems, which this laptop has none of.

    Update about a month later:
I just wanted to update this review now that I've had about a month with this laptop. I'm very, very happy with it! The screen is fantastic and really is IPS as confirmed by the part number in Device Manager. Dead Pixel Buddy shows NO dead pixels or other problems, and the screen, to me at least, is very bright and great to work on. I still love the keyboard and have zero complaints with it (well, OK, the number pad keys are half size, but Asus or anyone else couldn't squeeze a full size number pad into a 15.6" laptop without compromising the size of the main keys). This laptop plays all the games that I enjoy extremely well: Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto V, and Cities Skylines all work really well. I haven't had any troubles with this machine and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great, mid-level gaming laptop that doesn't break the bank. :)
