*This laptop has the full Nvidia 2070 chip, NO max Q chip. This hits the same 1620mhz of the Desktop version and more. I can overclock and get it up to 1700+mhz. I'm getting 60+fps at ultra settings on most new games (i tested total war 3k).
*No throttling! It maintains the 1620mhz consistently if you play with the thermals. See details below.
*This laptop is almost as thin as the Razer 15. Which is amazing because any other laptop this size has the MAX Q version, not the full chip like this.
*This is one of the few laptops to offer G-Sync!! Love it. But just note: stock, this feature is NOT turned on. you have to play with the settings and activate discrete graphics to enable it.
*The screen has edge light bleed. Not horrible but it is noticeable when using it at night while watching movies or etc.
It is not bad enough to return it. But every screen will be different, some could be worse.
*Stock setup (Balanced or Turbo mode) this laptop is hot!!. Under load CPU hits 100c max (after 1 hour torture test) and GPU hits 88c max. You will feel the heat on the keyboard and it will start to hurt your hands after awhile. BUT! you can fix this easily. see below
*Fans are loud. This is pretty standard for a gaming laptop. With the full 2070 chip don't expect a quiet cooling.
So let me go more in depth about the thermals.
Stock interface You can select "Balanced" or "Turbo" mode. Neither do much difference. Turbo does ramp up the fans.
But the 9750H is way too hot for the cooling system to handle. It barely keeps it below the max 105c that the CPU is designed for.
I used Total War 3 Kingdoms Battle Benchmark and FireStrike Ultra to really put this through the paces:
Pretty bad thermals right? The Total War 3K benchmark gave me 61fps average at these temps. I ran it three times.
How did I fix it? The problem is the CPU. It is overheating the whole laptop including the GPU.
So, I disabled hyper-threading in the bios and used the program "ThrottleStop" to turn off Intel Turbo boost. So the CPU doesn't go above the 2.6ghz base clock. Boom! 20c drop in temps just like that! Even better the performance increased in Total War 3K because it wasn't being thermally throttled anymore. I got 69fps average on the same benchmark now. The clock speed of the CPU only matters if you are doing editing or other production stuff. For gaming there is no difference. Sometimes it actually improves performance because the CPU temps stop choking the GPU.
20c decrease on the CPU and 10c decrease on the GPU. Much better! Now the laptop won't melt over time. enjoy.
1. The RGB backlight of keyboard is mediocre at best. LED quality is nowhere near the quality some of the other manufacturers do. Keys with modifiers are not properly lit; they're transparent but there's no LED directly shining through the extra legend on the key, so only the center of the key is properly lit. Wide keys like spacebar, enter and shift show noticable gaps between LEDs or show weak light around left and right edges. Vent LEDs that shows when you open the laptop are uneven; one side is noticeably brighter than the other.
2. RGB control software is terrible. Aura Creator app you use to control per-key RGB is C- at best. It's UI is bad and very clunky. ASUS please
3. Speakers. It is down-firing speaker, so the sound quality is mediocre. It's super good when you actually hold it upside down so that it blasts towards you, but since speakers are facing the desk the sound quality is poor. I also noticed on the left speaker, there is some kind of resonating with the chassis at 100hz ~ 160hz frequency which makes annoying vibration noise.
The keyboard is phenomenal, full stop. The keys are responsive and fast, clicky without being loud. I can feel like I can really fly on this machine. It stays dead silent and cool in discrete mode, which is great for me -- I do a ton of writing and a hot laptop is unacceptable.
I thought moving to a 1080p screen would be a disappointment after my last laptop had a 4k screen but the refresh rate is totally worth the trade-off. Everything just moves so SMOOTHLY. You can really feel it in games. G-sync / Freesync is a must have feature for any gamer, and it performs here to expectation
In gaming mode this thing absolutely cranks. I have a high standard for graphics and performance and I can safely tell you the RTX 2070 is an absolute beast. But every benchmark will tell you this.
The fans get loud when it performs but that's 100% to be expected and as obvious as noting that water is wet. The fans do a great job cooling down the machine and the design is revolutionary.
Lots of reviews will neg this beast for not having a webcam, I actually think this was a brave choice. Why mess around with a low-quality webcam no one uses when you can focus on the screen. Seems like an easy call to me. If I absolutely need a webcam and can't use my phone, I'd rather pay more for a dedicated camera that performs better.
I've been hunting so long for a computer that's thin, elegant, a badass gaming beast, but also something I can truly work on. I've been disappointed by Razer, turned off by MSI, and don't consider any of the rest. I need a laptop that's professional, turns heads, and gets the job done. This laptop is it.
