TROUBLE-SHOOTING STEPS: Why don't I get a dial tone on my handset? • Make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into the base and electrical outlet. Make sure the electrical outlet is not controlled by a wall switch. • Check the installation of the unit. Make sure the telephone line cord is connected from the base unit to a telephone jack. If the cord is already plugged in, unplug the cord at both ends and reconnect. • Your handset being out of range of the base may cause a poor connection. Move the handset closer to the base. The operating range may vary with environmental conditions and time of use. There may be places within your environment that a cordless phone will not work well. If the problem only occurs in certain areas of your environment, you can conclude that there is nothing wrong with the phone. • When placing the handset in the charging base, confirm that the charge contacts on the handset and base are making a good connection. The CHARGE light on the telephone handset will be on when the handset is charging. • You may have a defective telephone cord. Try replacing cord between the jack and the telephone base. • If you have connected this telephone to a phone jack that has not been used before, or that has not been used in sometime, there may be problems with this jack that you are not aware of. Use a telephone jack that you know is in proper working order. • If the other phones in your home are having the issue, the problem could be related to the telephone wiring in your home, or with your local telephone service. Please call your service provider for further assistance. • Does your handset display 1. Press HS Loc on Base 4 sec 2. Then Press # on Handset You need to register the handset to its base. Follow the above steps. • If the handset is not responding normally, you may need to reset your telephone system. Complete the following steps to reset the telephone system: Step 1: Disconnect the power to the telephone base. Step 2: Disconnect the handset battery(s). Step 3:Wait a few minutes and then reconnect the power to the telephone base. Step 4: Reconnect the handset battery(s). Step 5: Wait about one minute for the handset to re-establish a link with the telephone base and then test the phone again.
Top Customer Reviews
* The EL52100 has a much better speaker in the base unit. Messages can be played back louder and the sound is clearer.
* The buttons on the base unit are easier to use and they are labeled clearly so you can read their functions easily.
* The display on the handset is smaller and not as easy to read, though still usable.
* The base unit is fairly industrial looking and not as aesthetically pleasing as the EL52213.
* You apparently cannot add additional handsets to your system later on if you decide you want them.
* You have fewer choices as far as the number of rings that you can choose before the answering machine picks up.
If you are looking for a basic cordless phone with answering machine, this unit should meet your needs. It is a no-frills unit but it works satisfactorily. In my tests, I found that neither model's battery life was as good as my Panasonic cordless phone, especially if the base unit lacks power or is unplugged. If the base unit doesn't have power you cannot make calls even if your phone line is working. You cannot get a battery backup for the base unit. For both models, whenever the power goes out, you have to reset the internal clock. I don't understand why they could not include a small coin cell to retain the time. This is hugely annoying if you live in an area where you have power interruptions. However if you pay your local phone company for caller ID service, you can have the system set its time automatically that way. If you need to be able to listen to your messages in a noisy room, model EL52100 would be a better choice because the base unit has more power. The audio quality of both models is less than stellar but it is understandable. I hope my review will help you make the right choice for you.
The range seems pretty good. The sound is loud and clear, not extremely loud, but better than I've heard on many cordless phones I have trouble hearing on. The phone can be wall mounted. All the functions seem to work reliably. The clock / calander sets itself with caller ID info the first time you get a call after a power outage.
I've seen reviews stating the ringer can't be turned off. That is false. The base ringer can be turned off using the volume controls on the base and the handset ringer can be turned off in the menu. You have full volume control over both ringers and there are many ring tone choices.
There are a couple complaints about shortish talk time on the battery pack. That may be true. The phone uses a battery pack made from 2 NiMH AAA cells rated at 400mAh. Decent cells are rated much higher these days. I'm going to make my own pack using 1000mAh cells, which should more than double the talk time, but will also increase the charge time from empty.
All in all, it seems like an exceptionally nice phone at a bargain price. But, it may not be for you if you tend to have long phone conversations, unless you replace the battery pack with a higher capacity one. There are higher capacity battery packs available for this phone, just search the model number and add the word battery. I saw several 750mAh packs that would almost double talk time over the stock battery.
EDIT: I did make my own battery pack using two 1000mAh AAA NiMH batteries and the connector from the stock battery. I recently did a 2-hour phone training session using the phone and the battery wasn't even half drained. So, I can now say for sure talk time is beyond excellent with an upgraded battery. Not sure how long the stock battery would last because I replaced it soon after buying the phone. Still like this phone very much!!! It's probably well worth the price, even if you have to upgrade the battery. You may have noticed there are few other phones in the price range that even work properly and many are getting horrible reviews.
I also like that you can listen and delete the voice messages from the handset.
No problems with the caller ID.
Nothing bad to say about this phone.
