The A1 is almost identical to feel, power and function as my Fenix PD35 and Thrunite TN12, both rated at 1,000 lumens. I have other slightly cheaper lights like the UltraFire lights and the A1 seems clearly superior in light and solid feel. At the claimed 550 lumens the A1 in my comparison matches the PD35 and TN12 in brightness and throw.
Overall I am very pleased so far with the two that I bought. I am now purchasing others for backup lights and for friends. The one thing that I cannot testify to is durability. I have not had them long enough to know how sturdy they are if dropped or over time in everyday use. My initial impression is that they are a great light for the price if they will eventually prove durable over time.
The 18650 provided is interesting with the direct charge as the battery has its own charger built in. As long as you have a USB port, you can charge the provided battery with no other charger needed. I have also tried both lights that I bought with standard 18650 batteries and they worked perfectly. Also which might not matter to very many people, the A1 is the has the same size head as the PD35 and TN12 flashlights. I have Fenix traffic direction wands that I use at work. The A1 can use the same traffic direction wands or light diffuser if that matter to anyone.
The A1 is a well built light with good anodizing , smooth threads that were well lubed , and no sharp edges or noticeable mill marks and such. It also comes with the USB rechargeable cell and has the charging cord included with the rest of the package.
The light has Low/Medium/High/Turbo and SOS modes , that are changed by using the side switch on the light , with a hidden strobe that is accessed from any mode by simply holding the side switch down for about 1/2 to 1 full second and then a quick click to exit the strobe. The tail switch is used for momentary on or to turn the light on and off only. There is also a low Voltage indicator built in and the light will blink twice periodically , when the voltage starts getting low on the cell. The lens is AR coated and the reflector on the sample I recieved is very smooth and clean. The side switch is metallic with a coating of what looks like either powder coat or anodizing , but I cant say for certian on that. The XP-G2 emitter is well centered and the beam is fairly tight , but has decent coverage and no visible rings or artifacts that I have noticed in normal use.
The A1 and the ThruNite TC12 V2 are very very close in design , with only a few slight differences , so it could be that ThruNite had a hand in helping design this light also. I guess it could be speculated that this is a budget version of the ThruNite product even. Either way the quality of the light for the current price of $19.99 makes this a very good deal IMO and well worth a look for anyone who might be interested
I have the WOWTAC A1S CW and the WOWTACK A1S V2 NW. Both are rated at 1150 lumens, and having owned several high priced 1,000 lumen rated flashlights in the past, including the MF Tactical Pro Tango U2 LED Tactical Flashlight 5-Mode ($99.99), I have to say that my favorite for defense carry is the WOWTAC A1S CW. It is the perfect size, and is brighter and will blind you quicker than any other flashlight I have ever owned. Don't let the CW (cool white) moniker fool you, it is more blinding than the natural white. The one thing that I really like about the MF Tactical Pro Tango is that it uses a rotating collar to select the mode you want, including STROBE. All you have to do is press the tail cap once and you are in strobe mode. But… it is almost twice the diameter of, and longer than the WOWTAC, and does not carry easily in a pants pocket.
To my surprise, the strobe function for the WOWTAC A1S CW and the WOWTAC A1S V2 is accessed differently. With the WOWTAC A1S CW, you scroll through (by clicking the side button) the modes until you get the “Turbo” (brightest) mode, then, when you turn the light off, it will automatically be in “Turbo” mode the next time you click the tail cap. In order to access the “Strobe” function on the WOWTAC A1S CW, the flashlight MUST be in “Turbo” mode. In “Turbo” mode, you can get the "Strobe" mode by either holding down the side button then clicking the tail cap; or click the tail cap and then hold down the side button, for around 2 seconds.
At first I was very disappointed in this feature, as I want IMMEDIATE access to the "Strobe" mode. Then I realized that, as long as the flashlight is in “Turbo” mode, by adding additional length to the pocket clip so that it rests on the side (mode selection) button, I immediately get the “Strobe” mode when clicking the tail cap switch. With my flashlight set up like this, the strobe comes on in way less than two seconds. I can live with that. Since this flashlight is also EDC, all I have to do is rotate the pocket clip so that the side (mode) button is accessible for selecting a different mode.
With the WOWTAC A1S V2, which has the detachable striker bezel on it, the only way to access the "Strobe" mode is to already have “Turbo” mode selected and stored in memory, then quickly half press (no click), the tail cap switch 3 times. You will be in "Strobe” mode as long as you keep your thumb on the tail cap switch. If you want the flashlight to remain in "Strobe" mode, then half press (no click) the tail cap twice, and on the third press, push the tail cap switch all the way down until you hear the click. It will remain in "Strobe" mode until you click the tail cap switch to turn the flashlight off.
As long as the flashlight is in "Turbo" mode, two half presses followed by an immediate full press (click), will put you in "Strobe" mode.
To store “Turbo” mode in memory for either flashlight, click the tail cap switch to turn the flashlight on, then click the side button until you get the brightest mode (Turbo), then click the tail cap switch to turn the flashlight off. The flashlight is now in permanent “Turbo” mode until the next time you turn the flashlight on AND click the side (mode selection) button. Remember, the last mode you use, is the mode you will be in, the next time you use your flashlight.
Another feature I like about the WOWTAC A1S CW is that it is shorter than the WOWTAC A1S V2 with the “Striker Bezel” attached. I personally don’t see the need for the striker bezel. I think a throat punch or a kick in the nuts is far more effective. When you first shine a bright strobe light into someone’s eyes, the automatic reaction for that person is to throw their dominant arm up to shield their eyes, even if the weapon is in that hand. That gives you about a half second to disable your attacker, so make it count.
Have a good one!
