Initial Impressions on a Solid Video Card

This board was purchased for updating an older CAD workstation, xw4600 with Core 2 Duo E8400, 4GB RAM, and Quadro NVS 290 graphics on Win XP. The build quality is professional grade as are the drivers, which need to be downloaded from AMD's site. There is no CD media included in the package. Part of the reason for the higher cost of workstation grade graphics cards are the drivers and support, so I am surprised that there is no CD media included. I had downloaded the latest drivers already, so not a problem. There is even an AutoCADMax driver which I will be trying out (bonus). I also wanted to test out the three monitor configuration with eyefinity, but that also required purchasing two additional "active" DP to DVI adapters. The included DP to DVI adapter is "passive". According to the included documentation, two active DP to DVI adapters are required in addition to the native DVI port for connecting three monitors via DVI cables simultaneously. These adapters are about $25 each, just make sure they are specified as the active type or have active circuitry. The specs on this card are quite good for the price, 480 stream processors, 1GB GDDR5, eyefinity (3 monitor) support, etc. Nvidia options are just too costly to measure up. These are my initial impressions. Will report more after some testing with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012. Cheers.

Update (July 4, 2012):
This card has pretty much met all of my expectations for a workstation graphics card, especially with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012. There are a few things about Eyefinity that I would like to mention though. Eyefinity three monitor support requires Windows Vista or better. So doing three monitors on Win XP is not supported. Also, to get three monitors to work on Windows Vista or 7 requires the use of DP to DVI dongles that carry Active circuitry. The dongles will say "Active" on them. If they do not, such as the one that came with the card, they are likely to be the Passive variety which will not work on an AMD card with three outputs for three monitors. It will only support up to two monitors. There are AMD cards that have more than three outputs that may be able to use Passive DP to DVI adapters for more than three monitors, but they all have to run at the same screen resolution. To sum things up, no XP three monitor support (2 monitor max) and three monitor support only for Win Vista or better with Active Dongles, unless you have DP monitors.

Great for 30-bit color

I recently purchased a new Dell UltraSharp IPS panel which supports 10-bits of color per channel (Deep Color or 30-bit) allowing over one billion (yes, BILLION) colors to be displayed. The only video cards that are capable of running in 30-bit mode are workstation-class cards (ATI FirePro or Nvidia Quadro)... my ATI Radeon claimed that it could do 30-bit color, but the driver didn't support that mode.

So, after much research, I bought the FirePro V4900 because it was fast and cheap (my Windows 7 64-bit Experience Index went from 6.8 using the Radeon to 7.1 using the FirePro). And, it fully supports 30-bit color. Just be forewarned that Windows 7 (and most other software) does not utilize 30-bit color, so you'll end up with 24-bit color (16 million colors) for most applications. However, if you have software that supports 30-bit color (e.g., Adobe PhotoShop CS6), the results are stunning!

P.S. Windows claims that it supports 32-bit color which is a misnomer. What it actually supports is 24-bit color plus an 8-bit aplha (non-color) channel. So 32-bit color in Windows is actually 24-bit color.

** UPDATE ** The latest patch-level of Adobe Lightroom (v4.4) now appears to support 30-bit color in the Develop module (it's still 24-bit color in the Library module). Since I do the vast majority of my work in Lightroom, this is indeed a welcomed improvement!

Benefits from a third-party cooling system

I can't say anything intelligent about this card's performance except to note that nVidia doesn't appear to have anything that directly competes at this price. I used this FirePro in a build for a third party. I did notice two things:

First, it's not a silent card. Not even close. Every nVidia card I've used (and most ATI/AMD gaming cards) downclock their fans at idle. This one doesn't, and it uses a small, cheap, noisy, probably unreliable fan. But because it's a Radeon HD 6670 with a different driver set, you can use any cooling system designed for that card. I had no trouble replacing the fan and heatsink with a silent Arctic Cooling Accelero L2 Plus cooler.

Second, AMD's driver suite is still bloated and clunky relative to nVidia's. Does it work? Sure. Is it certified for various professional applications? Yes it is. Is the card fast? The person I assembled it for seems to think so.

Still a recommended product, then.

Could be a good Pro GPU but who knows!?

It's hard to tell if this product delivers what's expected from a Pro GPU. I guess it depends on the software you're using it for.
I use Autodesk Architecture 2012 and to date (Mar 8 - 2013) there are no updates for the dedicated performance plugin.
This GPU comes with the Catalyst "specialty" console but there is no guidance for setting it up for using it with the mentioned software.
So far, the performance of this GPU is less than a standard gaming GPU, even with the Autodesk certified drivers installed.
Now, I've contacted AMD for some guidance in order to set this GPU in a way that "justifies the investment on a Pro GPU" this was done on March 2 - 2013 and no answer to date.
Supposedly you are paying some extra for a standard GPU that has no gimmicks, not overclocked, simple and plain but that comes with drivers that enhance performance for specific applications AND support. Since none of this GPU's purposes have been achieved, I'm planning on returning this product for a refund if possible.
If you're planning on investing extra bucks for a dedicated workstation class GPU, please do some research and think twice before buying this particular item. Simply put, the Video Card and the company that manufactures it don't deliver what's expected.
I am very disappointed. I gave it 2 stars for it was promptly delivered and it's functioning.
