Aviatrix is the captivating story of one of the first women pilots to break into the all-male airline flight cockpit. Hired in 1976 at Hughes Airwest, Mary Bush made a herculean effort to overcome the resistance and harassment she faced in such a position, but it was to no avail.
Mary was introduced to flying at an early age. She started flying as a teenager, studying and training long hours until she painstakingly obtained her ratings one by one. Financial hardships hit the family hard, though, and Mary--desperate for both flying experience and money--headed down to the infamous Corrosion Corner in South Florida to be a "freight dog" for fly-by-night operators. However, she was frequently denied work because of her gender. She kept praying, working, and struggling, though, with the hope of one day becoming an airline pilot, a job in which she would have both steady work and steady pay.
Then, after her brother is lost at sea in one of the family airplanes, Mary is more determined than ever to become a pilot at an airline, just as her brother had planned to be. So, when she is offered the position at Hughes Airwest, Mary is thrilled. Going out west to fly jets was everything she had dreamed of and worked for. The discrimination and lewd remarks she had often faced in Florida, though, had not even come close to preparing her for the relentless harassment she would encounter as the first woman pilot at an airline.

A tale of equal rights, courage and paying a heavy price.

A fast and insightful read about what women had to go through breaking in into a man’s realm. It is also a story about romance, adventure and flying into exotic places.
A better title for this book would be True Courage. Pioneers in any endeavor take on many risks to clear a path for other to follow. These risks take a heavy toll on those Mary was brave to buck a rigged system and was brave to bare it all in this book. She fought hard for equality and paid a heavy price. Even with hard proof sexual harassment was not a prosecutable offense then so what recourse did a young woman had? None. All Mary could do was to grin and bear it and be better than anyone else.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone, whether you are in aviation or even if you’re afraid of flying. Aviatrix is worth reading in many levels. Some things may be hard to read because of what Mary endured and other passages are inspiring.
Full disclosure: After hearing of her story from screenwriter Mary Witten I had the privilege to meet Mary I hear about her trials and tribulations first hand. I’ve had Mary Bush Shipko and her David at my house. On page 48 the picture is not of a Piper but an Aero Commander and you probably would not have known if I didn’t mention it.
This is a piece of our history that must be told and I thank Mary for her courage to tell it all without holding back.

Compelling and fascinating story

Mary Bush’s autobiography describes her fierce determination, drive, work ethic and faith as she battles to fulfill her dream in a man’s world. Mary provides a compelling narrative with plenty of background and photos.
She achieved her dream to fly for Hughes Airwest, a major US airline in the 1970’s yet had to endure a hostile, toxic work environment rife with gender discrimination against a female pilot. Mary had traveled the world and flown many aircraft including the Hughes Corporation Constellations (which few, if any women ever did); yet with all her experience and skill, she was never accepted. She opens her heart to describe growing up in the family air cargo business, the tragic loss of her brother while piloting in the Caribbean, and her frustration, fear and extreme anxiety as she attempts to stay in the cockpit. The lack of legal enforcement of the Civil Rights Act (until the mid 1990’s) meant that the discrimination she experienced went unchecked, as it did for all women. In the end, she was forced to abandon her dream. But with courage, faith, family and friends, she recreated herself and has had a fulfilling life.

This book is an interesting mix of history, adventure and advancements for women. I always wanted to learn to fly and I enjoyed reading about Mary's adventures to the Caribbean and South America and her eventual success of becoming an airline pilot.
Learning about the different islands in the Caribbean and going along on the day in the life of a cargo pilot was fun.

In a warm and engaging style Mary tells us of both the good parts and hard parts of her life.
A wonderful book, I couldn't put it down and read it in a day

Mary Bush Shipko became the first female pilot to be hired by Hughes Air West at a time when less than 10 women were flying for U.S. airlines. Mary is a leader and a trail blazer. Her story highlights the highs and lows of opening the door to the cockpit for women. Mary's story is an insightful look into the field of commercial aviation in the 70's. This book is a good read for anyone interested in aviation, braking barriers and life's challenges.

Excellent!! I am not a pilot, but served for 23 years in the Air Force ,mainly aircraft maintenance. I personally witness the horrors this lady was unjustly exposed to. It took great courage to break the barrier and then maintain her dignity during the years of sexual harassment. As a Catholic, I admire here faith and strength.

Mary's book is well written. She writes about her father and family values. The loss of her brother and the effects it had on her family. The book provides a keen insight to the aviation industry. She writes of her drive and determination to achieve her goal; to fly as a pilot for a commercial airline. She achieves her goal, but the cost to her probably exceeds what most folks would pay for achieving their own goals.

This is not a “feel sorry for me” type of memoir, but rather a hard hitting factual account of this pilot's desire to fly planes for a commercial airline. I highly recommend that any woman who wishes to enter a male dominated field, read Mary's book and get the low down on what to expect. What a loss!! A person with Mary's drive, determination, skills, scruples, and credentials was not allowed to advance due to her gender.

Mary's narratives of the places she flew to are great, as well as the relating of aircraft mishaps and other stories. There are a few crude words in this book, as well as some minor graphic descriptions of the porn Mary was subjected to on nearly a daily basis. Her descriptions of these are much tamer than viewed on today's TV shows. The aircraft pictures and descriptions are great. Mary also uses family and friends' photos, as well as news clippings, to enhance the read. Well done.

I was drawn to this book because I love airplanes. It became a page turning reality check as the harassment Mary encountered unfolded while trying to excel in a gender bias industry. One waits for the white night to show up to free Mary and allow her to pursue her career. None appears, and the harassment stops only when Mary reluctantly leaves the industry due to health issues. Mary Shipko is a heroine!
